That's horse [expletive]. They made nearly every move with the future in mind and gave little consideration to winning games in 2012, but to say they sat down and willfully constructed the team with the their primary intent being that the 2012 Cubs lose as many games as possible is patently absurd. Your response to this tongue in cheek statement is patently absurd.

Err...the lower seeds don't have home field advantage. It definitely could be argued that they do. Yeah, I don't know the math, but I'm fairly sure someone who looked it up would find that a very large percentage of the best of 5 series in baseball history have ended in fewer than 5 games. And I'm sure a good percentage of those series were won by the road team. The first two games doesn't make homefield advantage. -
Why would you like to think that? 1/3 of the teams in a league make the playoffs. If you are .500 at the deadline, you should not be selling off. Because I think their plan from the beginning was to clean house and start fresh, while maximizing the value of their current assets to get as much as possible for them. Part of it backfired on them when Garza and Marmol got injured and Dempster didn't want to go to Atlanta, but they still made out with a couple top 10 prospects in Villanueva and Vizcaino. And I like to think that if they had a plan from the beginning they'd stick to it if every gamble broke right for them just as it did when almost everything broke wrong for them. Their gambles did break right. They tried to build the worst team they could and succeeded.

A season of major league baseball isn't noise. Plus, there's no such thing as "a year to sign FA's or make room for future FA's". Room for future FA's is just a made up excuse to justify taking a dive. I disagree with you on both your responses. I do believe the cubbies intend to sign FA's, expensive one's, when it makes sense, winning sense. And yes, it was noise. It is over, it sucked, I suspect Theo hates losing even more than you do. Your comments really don't contradict my original points, so I guess that makes your comments noise, eh? No, your comments are just meaningless gibberish meant to pretend that taking a dive wasn't a bad thing. There's no such thing as a year to sign guys or a year to make room. There's no more room for future FA today than there was a year ago.

I guess that's the key difference then. Mather was crummy in < 150 MLB PA's over 2010-11, but in extended time in AAA he was very similar to what we've seen and expected from Sappelt. Spring training numbers aren't worthless because of sample size issues.

At some point, Epstein has to take the blame for either the 2012 Red Sox or Cubs. He can't dodge both. He takes blame for the 2012 Cubs. You don't get to take a dive and then dodge the criticism for all the losses you caused by fielding a horrible team.

Fortunately (or unfortunately...?) the user Slide Castro Slide is incorrect. Yes, the OP was thrilled when Hendry was fired, and was mildly thrilled when Theo was hired but the OP doesn't really have a problem with a rebuilding year or three. The point is that people give Theo a free pass instead of berating some of his poor decisions. He did wreck the Red Sox recently. We can't ignore that. He hardly wrecked the Red Sox. That's a dysfunctional ownership group proving its incompetency on a daily basis. Theo made a poor decision by taking a dive this season. It was unnecessary and highly disappointing.

Hold up a second here. Didn't this mental midget pass on at least one opportunity to be traded to a contender in the past 6 weeks or so? There's little chance the Cubs are WS contenders before his last two years are up. Surely he has to see that, right? Pretty sure there were no trades on the table for Soriano. I think he came out and said he wouldn't want to play in San Fran but I don't think they ever offered anything. Pretty sure everybody knew he turned down trades to San Fran and Pittsburgh.

The plan failed, but overhauling the minor league system and focusing on developing your own players then adding what you need from the free agent pile after your kids start to contribute is the same thing. It failed. But it's the same plan. Hopefully these guys do a better job implementing it.

It's not even the first time we've had this plan. It's not? No, not even close. This isn't new. It's new people doing it and hopefully they will do it better, but this has all been done before.
