Tucker could care less who is in the FO when those offers of $500,000 + come flying in. If Hoyer doesn't deliver at the trade deadline, doesn't go deep in the playoffs, and doesn't extend Tucker, why should he be retained?
How about waiting until the end of the year to see what deals he makes at the deadline and whether he can extend Tucker? It's not like somebody is going to snap him up.
Who is the one prospect that's going to step into Happ or Suzuki's shoes and keep us competitive? Remember our last two "can't miss prospects" really struggled for months. They do have to pay PCA, Steele, whoever we acquire in the Happ/Suzuki deal (I'm assuming they won't be prospects), and Tuckers $37-40 million dollars.
As much as we all want the Cubs to re-sign him, the fact is that Ricketts knows that we don't need him to be competitive in the woefully weak NL Central. We've got the assets (farm system and money) to acquire what we need for the next few years. Ricketts will be just as happy with an 85-win team and money in his pocket than with a 93-win team with less money in his pocket.
Baseball Trade Values has Cassie at 12.2 and Alcantara at 12.8. They have some value in a package deal. BBTV has Valdez at 12.8 and Sandy Alcantara at 22 as examples of what might be available for the right package.
