  1. The bottom line is if you want quality, you have to give up quality, I don't want to trade Prior, but depending on what other players are involved it might be good for the Cubs. All of us got spoiled by listening to all of those rumors that said we would get an All-Star for our spare parts and prospects. Most GMs aren't going to give up Abreu, Tejada, Dunn, or Manny for a #4 starter and 2 prospects. I'm sure that JH could get Abreu or Dunn if he offered Prior, but he doesn't want Prior in the NL facing the Cubs.
  2. Jacque Jones will be traded next winter if Pie is ready. He should be pretty tradeable at $10 million over 2 years, since 3 teams offered him more than $15 million over 3 years.
  3. That's the best news I've heard in a long time. Now if we could just convince Dusty that playing Cedeno at 2B is better than playing Perez there.
  4. Whew! Tomko is ready to sign with the Dodgers.
  5. With those 2 deals you mentioned, you must be looking to replace Rogers or Sullivan at the Tribune.
  6. Z/Pie/Perez for Tejada...for the love of baseball god....why won't somebody plz hut him up. Millwood/Weaver/Zito would have to be in the Cubs possession before I would even consider trading Zambrano for Tejada. Trading Z for Tejada, and "hoping" to sign Millwood, etc is not very sound. It would not only get their attention, it would cause them to wet their pants.
  7. I've said that a few times too. The problem is twofold: getting the Cubs to 90 wins and getting the Cards to come back to the pack (88 - 90 wins). Winning 90 games doesn't do much if the Cards continue to win 95.
  8. If we can get someone to platoon with Jones in RF (Byrnes, Mench, etc) and Pie is ready next year, I don't think the Cubs will have too much trouble trading Jones at $5million per year for 2 years. He was offered more than that by 2 teams this year, so I'm not too upset with the 3-year contract.
  9. That's the one thing I worry about. Knowing Dusty, two 0 for 4 games by Murton and Cedeno and we'll see Mabry in LF and Perez at SS. I do think this team has a shot at 90 wins. Hopefully, the Cards will come back down to the 90 win plateau.
  10. I'm hoping that jones was signed due to an imminent trade for Tejada or dunn or Manny or any player that would be a significant upgrade over a current Cub position player. Anyone else severly depressed today? I didn't have one drink last night and yet I feel hungover. I know that we can dream, but I think JH is determined not to trade Zambrano, Prior, or Pie and that's the only way we would get Tejada, Abrey, Dunn, or Manny. I think we can expect a smaller trade or a signing of a player that would help the bench and platoon in RF.
  11. Unless JH can make a trade for a platoon RF (Mench, Kearns, etc.), the next question becomes who are the PTNL that we get for Patterson, Welly, etc. There still seems to be more than a few "spare" parts on this team. Obviously, Hendry should have some money available at the trade deadline, so let's hope the Cubs can be in contention in July. Personally, I think this team has improved over last year's team: better leadoff man, stability in LF (hopefully), more speed, better defense, stability at closer, and veteran presence in bullpen. 90 wins is a possibility, but the Cards have to come back to the pack.
  12. add in a bucket of chicken wings and half the people here things it should land Abreu. Add Williams and Harvey and I think it gets you Abreu. Unfortunately, you're not the Phil's GM. Everything I read said they want a #1 SP for Abreu. Nowhere in that list of names is anything above a #3 SP maybe.
  13. I still have trouble picturing Nomar in the OF (as has been rumored for some teams). I can just imagine his first throw to the plate sidearm.
  14. We have no way of knowing that, but circunstantial evidence sure points to the fact that Giles didn't want to leave SD and told his agent to get him the best deal possible from the Padres.
  15. There has been talk of Boston going after Coco Crisp by offering Arroyo, if Nomar signs with the Indians. What about Williams for Crisp. If we need to, we could add Wellyto the deal. Crisp isn't the impact slugger that we want in RF, but he is young, fast, cheap, and can put up a good BA.
  16. Any new news on that rumor? Last I heard, the names of Garland/Contreras, Uribe, Cotts and a prospect wer ebeing thrown around. I haven't heard any more on the rumor, but if it's Garland, Uribe, Cotts, and another prospect, the Sox had better win the WS because their future would be down the tubes.
  17. I have a very hard time envisioning this team finishing over .500, considering it's just as bad if not worse than last year's team which finished below .500. Depending on who JH gets for RF, I don't see how you can say this team is worse than last year. We have a leadoff man, we have a closer for the whole year, we have 2 experienced setup men, and we have a stronger bench. Assuming Pierre and Walker are #1 & #2, that gives Lee and Ramirez many more RBI opportunities. With the bullpen roles set, we should lose far fewer games than last year. Finally, the first bat off of the bench won't be Macias. As with most teams, the wild card in the mix is injuries.
  18. I'm a firm believer in not only Murton, but Cedeno too. I think Murton will have a long and solid career because he makes good contact and studies the game. Murton will end up an excellent #2 hitter and career averages of .290 with 20-25 HRs. is what I expect. I predict Cedeno will end up an All-Star (hopefully, with the Cubs) and will match Furcal's numbers within 2-3 years. Now if only Dusty will let them play on a regular basis and work their way through a slump or a bad day.
  19. I started this thread about being patient, but I must admit I might completely run out of patience if Kenny Williams pulls off the Tejeda deal that is rumored.
  20. I am as impatient as anyone out there, but maybe we need to realize that it is only December 15th and that a lot of things could happen in the next 6-7 weeks (or even into spring training). After the holidays, teams could realize that they need to make the trade that they're sitting on right now. Situations change that might make a GM rethink trade offers. What if some of the players in the World Classic get injured? If the Mets manage to get Manny, Floyd becomes available. If Tejada gets traded, some other team might feel the need to make a deal. I still think there is a decent chance we could get Huff, Lugo, Green, Nixon, Mench, Wilkerson, or Kearns. I still think there is a slight chance of us getting Tejada or Floyd. Unfortunately, a lot of us would sleep a little better if we had one or more of those players on the team today.
  21. As we all know, it is not a simple answer as to why a team does well in a certain year. Such things as luck, injuries, which division they play in, players having "career years", etc. all figure into the mix. Obviously, competence and genius (see Atlanta) also figure in the formula. I think Kenny Williams took a few chances in 2005 and they all paid off. Was that genius or luck? It did help to be in the AL Central, especially when the Twins had an off year and the Indians were still to young to win the division. The playoffs are always a crapshoot because so much depends on which team has been the hottest lately and can 1 or 2 players get hot for a 2-week stretch. Obviously, the Sox will remain competitive in 2006 because of their starting pitchers. Will Thome be healthy? Will they miss Rowand? Will their relief pitchers respond like 2005? Will there be any key injuries? Will the Twins improve and the Indians mature enough to compete? That's why they play the games. In the meantime, Kenny Williams and Ozzie Guillen have a ways to go before I label them "geniuses".
  22. I've heard all the rumors that Patterson won't take instruction, but I wonder if Walt Hriniak could get through to him. It might be worth a few bucks spent by the Cubs to check it out. Even the Patterson haters have to admit that there is that "potential" that would be amazing if it ever came to be.
  23. Someday someone will write a book and we'll find out why. Some team is going to get a very productive 2B for cheap.
  24. Unfortunately, that might end up being the best available option remaining. Why do you say "unfortunately"? Green is a left-handed bat that has consistently decent numbers. No he's not Abreu or Dunn, but he's better than Huff, Burnitz, or Jacque Jones. Vasquez is a good #2 (on some teams) or #3 starter who is overpriced, but not more than Millwood or Burnett. Wood comes back strong in May and you trade either Wood or Vasquez at the trade deadline. I say unfortunately, because a deal like that will completely deplete the farm system, and these guys are not impact players. I don't think taking both of these players would necessarily deplete the farm system depending on who's paying their money. If we're paying their overpriced contract, they might be cheaper (in players) than you think. You're right about them not being impact players, but an impact player (Abreu, Dunn, Manny) would deplete our farm system and our major league SP.
