  1. Why are so many of you down on Murton? It seems to me that all I'm reading is platoon him, trade him, or make him the 4th OF. I think Murton has shown that he could hit at every level he has played at. He's not necessarily a power hitter, but his numbers from last year would project to 20-25 HRs over a full year. I realize that he was "protected" from some RH pitchers last year, but he didn't put up all of those great numbers in the minors by facing only LH pitching. Between Murton and Cedeno, I think the Cubs have 2 young players who will have long and solid careers and need to be given the chance to show their stuff. Of course, if the Cubs can get someone like Dunn only by including someone like Murton, then I understand.
  2. It seems to me that we have an excellent #2 hitter by the name of Todd Walker.
  3. Jones has a 3-year contract, but that doesn't mean he'll be with the Cubs for 3 years. Assuming Pie is ready next year, Jones should be a very tradeable commodity as a corner OF signed for $10 million over 2 years. Pie may also find himself in a platoon with Jones for a year or so. If Pie is ready, he'll play regularly. After all of the ballyhooing about Pie and refusing to trade him, he isn't going to start out in a platoon situation with a less-than-average RF.

  5. so far as it affects his production, i'm not worried. he's a professional and he'll give 100%. now, i don't know how it will affect his contract negotiations in the future, and that's really the only thing to worry about. oh well, we'll probably have a new GM by then anyway, so i doubt it will have any negative effect. For future negotiations, it's to his advantage to have solid seasons. He'll be looking for a big contract from the Cubs (or somebody else) and "potential" won't get it.
  6. He makes outrageous proposals to get all of us to read his column. I think he's an idiot, but I read his column to verify that fact.
  7. For all you Hendry haters, just think if hil Rogers was the GM.
  8. I'm hoping that JH can wait long enough and the Orioles will see that their not going to get the price they want for Tejada. Hopefully, then the price will come down to young players and prospects (excluding Prior). Also, a 3-team deal might be worked out (like the mentioned A's deal) where a ton of prospects goes in a deal involving some players like Zito and Tejada.
  9. The bottom line is if you want quality, you have to give up quality, I don't want to trade Prior, but depending on what other players are involved it might be good for the Cubs. All of us got spoiled by listening to all of those rumors that said we would get an All-Star for our spare parts and prospects. Most GMs aren't going to give up Abreu, Tejada, Dunn, or Manny for a #4 starter and 2 prospects. I'm sure that JH could get Abreu or Dunn if he offered Prior, but he doesn't want Prior in the NL facing the Cubs.
  10. Jacque Jones will be traded next winter if Pie is ready. He should be pretty tradeable at $10 million over 2 years, since 3 teams offered him more than $15 million over 3 years.
  11. That's the best news I've heard in a long time. Now if we could just convince Dusty that playing Cedeno at 2B is better than playing Perez there.
  12. Whew! Tomko is ready to sign with the Dodgers.
  13. With those 2 deals you mentioned, you must be looking to replace Rogers or Sullivan at the Tribune.
  14. Z/Pie/Perez for Tejada...for the love of baseball god....why won't somebody plz hut him up. Millwood/Weaver/Zito would have to be in the Cubs possession before I would even consider trading Zambrano for Tejada. Trading Z for Tejada, and "hoping" to sign Millwood, etc is not very sound. It would not only get their attention, it would cause them to wet their pants.
  15. I've said that a few times too. The problem is twofold: getting the Cubs to 90 wins and getting the Cards to come back to the pack (88 - 90 wins). Winning 90 games doesn't do much if the Cards continue to win 95.
  16. If we can get someone to platoon with Jones in RF (Byrnes, Mench, etc) and Pie is ready next year, I don't think the Cubs will have too much trouble trading Jones at $5million per year for 2 years. He was offered more than that by 2 teams this year, so I'm not too upset with the 3-year contract.
  17. That's the one thing I worry about. Knowing Dusty, two 0 for 4 games by Murton and Cedeno and we'll see Mabry in LF and Perez at SS. I do think this team has a shot at 90 wins. Hopefully, the Cards will come back down to the 90 win plateau.
  18. I'm hoping that jones was signed due to an imminent trade for Tejada or dunn or Manny or any player that would be a significant upgrade over a current Cub position player. Anyone else severly depressed today? I didn't have one drink last night and yet I feel hungover. I know that we can dream, but I think JH is determined not to trade Zambrano, Prior, or Pie and that's the only way we would get Tejada, Abrey, Dunn, or Manny. I think we can expect a smaller trade or a signing of a player that would help the bench and platoon in RF.
  19. Unless JH can make a trade for a platoon RF (Mench, Kearns, etc.), the next question becomes who are the PTNL that we get for Patterson, Welly, etc. There still seems to be more than a few "spare" parts on this team. Obviously, Hendry should have some money available at the trade deadline, so let's hope the Cubs can be in contention in July. Personally, I think this team has improved over last year's team: better leadoff man, stability in LF (hopefully), more speed, better defense, stability at closer, and veteran presence in bullpen. 90 wins is a possibility, but the Cards have to come back to the pack.
  20. add in a bucket of chicken wings and half the people here things it should land Abreu. Add Williams and Harvey and I think it gets you Abreu. Unfortunately, you're not the Phil's GM. Everything I read said they want a #1 SP for Abreu. Nowhere in that list of names is anything above a #3 SP maybe.
  21. I still have trouble picturing Nomar in the OF (as has been rumored for some teams). I can just imagine his first throw to the plate sidearm.
  22. We have no way of knowing that, but circunstantial evidence sure points to the fact that Giles didn't want to leave SD and told his agent to get him the best deal possible from the Padres.
  23. There has been talk of Boston going after Coco Crisp by offering Arroyo, if Nomar signs with the Indians. What about Williams for Crisp. If we need to, we could add Wellyto the deal. Crisp isn't the impact slugger that we want in RF, but he is young, fast, cheap, and can put up a good BA.
  24. Any new news on that rumor? Last I heard, the names of Garland/Contreras, Uribe, Cotts and a prospect wer ebeing thrown around. I haven't heard any more on the rumor, but if it's Garland, Uribe, Cotts, and another prospect, the Sox had better win the WS because their future would be down the tubes.
