  1. First, I want to repeat what I have written many times in other threads: I think Cedeno is going to match Furcal's production within 2-3 years (for less than 5% of the cost). If the Cubs acquire any 2 of the OFs that have been mentioned in these posts, they will have a much stronger team than they did last year. At this point, keeping Walker at 2B is sounding like a good idea. With all of what I have mentioned, the only problem could be at leadoff man (unless Pierre is acquired). Also, unless one of the OFs is Abreu or Manny, the Cubs should have more than enough money to go after a free agent starter.
  2. Yeah, it tells us that teams don't view Nomar as a SS, anymore. RF with the Indians,1B with the Orioles 3B with the Dodgers or Pirates DH with the Twins/A's CF with the D'backs/Red Sox. And while most of the teams have an established SS, the ONLY team that doesn't---the Twins---want him as a DH. That tells you what GM's around think about Nomar's chances at staying at SS. I couldn't believe that when I read it. The Indians really think he can play RF when most teams laughed at him trying to throw sidearm from LF.
  3. Agree'd. Why trade MAX VALUE for MAX VALUE. Especially when you are trading a well loved Cubs player (the fans and team loves him). . If Derrick got 5/60 (12 a year) he is worth that and I want him hear for 5 more years. do you really think he'll ever be worth close to 12 million in a year? even assuming he's the best 1b glove in the leagur, which he's not? If Furcal is worth $10-$13 million per year, then Derrick is worth $17 million.
  4. I worry about some of these rumors about trading Cedeno. I know that sometimes you have to give up a good player to get a good player, but I think Cedeno could very well be an All-Star in a few years. Many people have brought up the fact that the Cubs haven't had home-grown talent position players for a long time. I hope the Cubs can get the players they need without giving up Cedeno.
  5. I'm hoping Nomar goes to the AL because I think he still has a productive bat and I don't want to see him beating the Cubs.
  6. No to the trade if you mean Carlos Zambrano. I would do it if it were Victor Zambrano.
  7. I just thought that it would rid us of 2 pitchers we might lose and give us a young (28), versatile, and cheap ($1.3 million) player. Assuming we had a bench of Inge, Mabry, Hairston, Perez, and Blanco, we would have guys who could do a decent job pinch hitting and could "catch the ball" when needed. Also, you would have a decent sub for every position, in case of injury.
  8. It wouldn't be the blockbuster trade that all of us are waiting for, but the Detroit papers are reporting that the Tigers are desperate for pitching and a player who might be available is Brandon Inge. Inge would be great on the bench as a backup at C, 3B, & OF with very good defense at all 3 positions. A guy that versatile would give Dusty a lot of options. How about Mitre & Welly for Inge?
  9. Has anyone else had problems connecting the last couple of days? Hopefully the problems are corrected because I need my daily "fix" of NSBB.

  11. Apparently he wanted to stay in SD because I'm sure he could have gotten a better deal somewhere else. I just wonder if SD knew that he wanted to stay when they lowballed him on the first offer. Well, now it's time for JH to make that big trade for a RF.
  12. I think Walker is too much to give up for Bradley. We should be able to get him for Welly or someone like him. After all, all of the rumors are that the Dodgers are willing to let him go for nothing. Walker could be used in a package for a RF or SP.
  13. This is kind of an interesting deal. From the reports it sounds like the Sox gave up 2 very promising pitchers with Rowand to get Thome. You have to give Kenny Williams some credit for taking a big chance that Thome is fully recovered and ready to be the Thome of old.
  14. If management let's Joe mold this team of young 'uns without trading people out from under him, it could be a very rewarding challenge I agree that this gives Girardi a chance to mold young players and I would assume there will be no expectation of winning. Could be a great opportunity for Joe after a couple of years.
  15. And when the prospect is ready to play in the majors, you could trade Renteria.
  16. And if he is only seeking 3 years/$30 million, why are people suggesting JH offer him $39 million over 3 years.
  17. I think signing Giles makes a heck of a lot more sense than trading away your best prospect, and I have a feeling that Hendry has as much interest in trading Pie for Abreu as he does for signing Giles. That's true. But then again, Pie is only the Cubs best prospect because they are so bereft of top flight prospects after slowly falling down the list of top farm systems. He's got some pretty large flaws for all the we can't trade him for a current start talk. I'm not advocating trading Pie instead of signing Giles. I'm all about Giles. But if the GM won't open his eyes to the obviousness of signing Giles, he has to trade for an impact corner OF someway and somehow. And I'd like to see them trade prospects other than Pie to get that corner OF. But I would not let Pie and his slim chance for greatness stand in the way of making a trade, if he was a dealbreaker. He's not worth it. He's got more potential and less flaws than a guy named Lou Brock had when the Cubs dealt him to the Cards. I think he went on to have a decent career. Obviously, with a 20-year old in the minor leagues, you can only speculate as to whether he will reach his potential, but there aren't many guys his age with his tools who strives to improve like he does.
  18. I think your payroll would be much higher than $110 million. Also, you don't have Henry Blanco or a substitute catcher.
  19. The bottom line is that it's hard to judge Hendry or his plan until he is finished building the roster. Everyone criticizes Hendry until he pulls off a trade for Abreu or Dunn and then he's a genius. I think JH has done a great job over the past 3 years and those teams would have been competitive but for injuries and Dusty Baker.
  20. How do you know he won't be great for at least 3 years? Pujols and Cabrera didn't take 3 years to become stars. Every GM will ask for Pie, but I think Abreu can be obtained with a package of players without Pie included. Hendry has accumulated a ton of spare parts, rule 5 players, and prospects to put together a decent package.
  21. I'd set the line at 18/1 that Pie becomes a 5 time all star or better. Abreu's been an All Star twice in nine seasons. Seems like a silly measuring stick to me. Good point - how about finish in the top 3 in VORP for his position for at least 5 years? What's the point of your question? Does Pie have to turn into a HOF worthy player to make trading him a questionable idea? It just seemed to me that most people on here were overrating Pie's chances to be a top tier play. I asked the question to confirm that belief. I don't think the posters on NSBB are overrating Pie. All Hendry would have to do is float his name as trade bait and watch every executive in baseball come running. When people who have spent their whole lives evaluating players gush over a player like Pie, then I think we have a right to be excited about the possibility that he might be a superstar. Everyone knows that there are no guarantees, but his age, speed, ability, and attitude sure looks like the real thing to anyone who has watched him play.
  22. I think everyone agrees that Abreu would be a fantastic fit in RF. The only question involves what you have to give up for him. While I've been waiting a long time for a WS, there's no guarantee that Abreu gets you into the WS next year. All of those big names are great, but the Cubs won't go far with an extended DL stint by Lee, Ramirez, Prior, Zambrano, or Wood. Everybody stays reasonably healthy and the Cubs can win with some of those lesser names in RF (Mench, Floyd, Wilkerson, etc.).
  23. I think I heard somewhere that Braves think Betemit is bulking up and they think he may need to be moved to a less-athletic position than SS.
  24. Don't forget Pie is 20 years old and expected to be playing regularly in the majors at 21. I don't know what you consider a "can't miss" prospect (or if there is such a player), but he's the closest this organization has had in a long, long time.
  25. I agree with you although I still don't quite understand including Hill in this "untouchable" list. Pie isn't going anywhere, period.
