  1. Will we lose additional lower round picks for signing additional free agents?
  2. That's not really the case. Run production and run prevention are equally important. The thing is, at the major league level, the vast majority of run prevention occurs on the mound, as the difference between the best and worst major league fielders at a given position is relatively small, especially when compared to the difference between the best and worst hitters at the same position. So, when choosing a player, defense should be given some consideration, but much more consideration should be given to his offensive skill set, as that's where he's much more likely to be beneficial, with very rare exception. Yup, that makes solid sense. People shouldnt say that defense doesn't matter though. I believe middle infield/outfield range can make a large impact on hits/runs that a pitcher may or may not give up. More than most people think. Its not something that you can debate with stats though. But no one has said defense doesn't matter! Oh, sorry lol I guess I was seeing things.

  4. Defense does indeed matter. Stoping runs can be just as valueble as producing them, though there is no way of quantifying the ablility one guy has over another to stop runs with stats, so alot of posters here ignore it completely. If you cant back your statements with SLG, OBP, OPS, OPS+, ERA, ERA+, WHIP or some other type of offensive or pitching stat your written off as a loon. *sigh*
  5. If Onley had this scoop it would be all over the ESPN site right now.
  6. Thats his name I dont care that he wants people to call him Shawn, its not Shawn its Chone (like phone). ITS CH - OWN... if you dont like it Chone go cry to your momma, if she wanted you called Shawn she'd have named you Shawn! ***rant off*** Sorry this guy's name bothers me more than that guy a few years back that wanted to be called Rock. *sigh*
  7. That seems to be, for some reason what alot of the posters on this baord believe. Look at Maddux's numbers and you tell me what the likely scenario would be. Oh I wasnt really refering to Maddux specificly. I do believe Maddux is likely to regress due to his age. I was just speaking in general.
  8. That seems to be, for some reason what alot of the posters on this baord believe.
  9. We've only improved at one of the outfield spots. Jones is still Jones(and '07 Jones is likely to be worse than '06 Jones) even if he moves to a different position. Also, DeRosa is far from a guarantee to be an upgrade over our 2B production in '06(.274/.326/.411/.737). Nothing in life is garanteed but I think I like the odds that DeRosa will put up better numbers at 2nd than what we got there last year. You'll see Im tellin ya you'll ALL SEE!
  10. LOL Im changing my avatar, you've inspired me goony
  11. *sigh* someone needs to buy goony a "I hate DeRosa" T-shirt. I think people are going to be happy with DeRosa.
  12. Can someone post Soriano's career numbers at Wrigley? Im currious and not sure where to look for them. If the physical cleared and Aram is flying in tuesday for his own news conference why not just have them both at the same conference?
  13. Why the heck does Murton need a platoon? If there is anyone that needs a platoon partner its JJ. God our people are stupid!
  14. Anyone heard anything about when we might see a press conference?
  15. so when is the press conference?
  16. Money for signing draft picks is all going to be slotted now isnt it? At least thats what I remember hearing from the new colective bargaining agreement. I couldnt get anyone to explain what that meant, but I thought it meant that each round has a set amount of money you spend on a player selected in that round and then you cant go over that amount. Im on cold meds and much of what I just said may not make any sense lol ...*sigh* been a long day
  17. Crisp numbers are aweful, ugly, poopy... well maybe not so bad but extremely mediocre. Why give up anything of value to get a player like this? He is basicly Bynum with a cooler name.
  18. So when can we expect the press conference with Soriano in Cubs uniform ect? Cubs.com said something about an official announcement perhaps coming as soon as tommorow, would that include a press conference with the player and contract details? Maybe Bruce would have some more info on this. If there was going to be a press conference tommorow wouldn't they have announced it already so that people can get to Wrigley or wherever they would hold it?
  19. You know, some people will never be happy. If we go through the offseason and lose Soriano and Drew to other teams people would have whined and moaned about how Hendry never gets the top tier free agents. Now for once the guy went out shopping against half the teams in the majors who want this guy and finally gets the guy. So everyone whines and moans about how its to much for to long. Well sorry people but you cant have it both ways, this was probably the only way we were going to get Soriano. Hendry's rear end is over the fire and he's going all out ti try to win before he loses his job. Im not angry at the guy for finally being determined to get his target. Am I happy about an 8 year contract? No. Thats the only way we were going to get this bat into our lineup though so for that Im grateful. 4 years down the road Im sure we'll all be mad about how Soriano's contract is eating away at our budget. For now though I'll relish that we actually got the big name free agent and I'll enjoy his production in the lineup for as long as it last.
  20. This guy related to Albert? If so, in what way? Maybe he's dealing drugs with Albert.... hmmmm
  21. Mike Harkey was the man! I had such high hopes for that guy, didnt he have some kind of career ending injury?
  22. If he has soft hands, his foot work can be retrained. Im not sure how good our infield instructors are in the minors maybe they could bring someone in specificly to work with him during the spring (Sandberg maybe). He's much more valueble as a 2nd baseman Id hate to give up on him if there is hope, if anyone would know its Sandberg. Think Eric will pop up in winterball somewhere? Or just take the next couple months off.
  23. Bleh, this is no huge deal. A swap of backend bulpen guys. Cotts has some great potiental, probably more so than Ardsma and he's left handed. If he regains his former glory we may have a real find, if not Ardsma is no great loss.
  24. It's funny because normally the majority of our posters are fiscally conservative about what the Cubs are spending for big names, but now a lot of people don't care...just sign a bunch of people and worry about the negatives later. I think the majority of the posters have no problem over-spending for good players. It's the 3/13 million for DeRosa's of the world that drives everyone here crazy... Not everyone, I certainly saw the value in it and there were several other people that didnt have a problem with it either. Try not to speak for everyone, just because the majority agrees with you. I wasn't dancing in the streets over it but I certainly understand why he was signed even if it was slightly over paying. I think alot of people are going to be eating crow on the DeRosa signing.
