  1. I think Ward has some value as a bench guy, a lefty with some power.
  2. I thought Meche was suppose to make a descion today? Today is almost over.
  3. The man is working himself to the bone, at least we know he's really trying his hardest. I do hope he's ok, its hard to work trades from the hospital.
  4. Could also be food poisoning
  5. No doubt, that makes no sense at all.
  6. Lilly and Suppan have fairly similar stats, I dont have the groundball/flyball ratios but Suppan had a slightly better era and gave up 7 less homeruns in sligtly more innings. Suppan doesnt strike out as many people as Lilly, they both are blah. Suppan is going to probably be a better value but is not left handed, if that really matters.
  7. what good does it do for the yankees to drive up the price for the Cubs? That doesn't make sense at all. Everyone like screwing with Hendry. It's the new game. Yes lol Hendry is MLBs new pinata! Maybe they think if they wack him enough times krispy kremes will fall out.
  8. Bold prediction: Meche to Blue Jays Lilly to Yankees Cubs to 5th place Wow how quickly things have changed. Yesterday we would have been thrilled to not get either of the two. Heh some of us still hold that view...
  9. Bold prediction: Meche to Blue Jays Lilly to Yankees Cubs to 5th place Lilly and Meche are as likely to save us as Nefi
  10. That's the problem, everybody just assumes that we could get as much from "the kids" as we would from someone like Lilly. Hill panned out, but who else was there? Well, let's go through last year's options: Marshall: Oft-injured, 5.59 ERA in 2006 Guzman: Oft-injured, 7.39 ERA (with Cubs) in 2006 Mateo: 5.32 ERA Marmol: Had to go on DL, 6.08 ERA If you think you can rely on those guys to do as well or even nearly as well as Lilly/Meche, you're really grasping at straws. Prior and Miller are also in the mix, but Prior will get hurt, and Miller has questions about his durability and stuff. If you go into next year with Zambrano, Hill, and three of the options listed above, you're accepting that the Cubs will be a lousy team again. That's fine, but don't delude yourself into thinking that this team would be in the playoff hunt. ... and you think Lilly and Meche are going to lead us to the promise land? ROFL I think out of those 4 guys you mentioned and Prior/Miller you get at least the production that Lilly/Meche +whoever would give you and probably better production.
  11. i've read that lilly has told friends he wanted to go back to the yankees so who knows if the cubs can do much besides drive up the price. The Yankees worry me tremendously. If they put an offer close to ours, I'd think he'll take it. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our chances of snagging Lilly as I was before I knew the Yankees were involved. My gut tells me he's a Yankee by tomorrow morning. His agent says he meeting with the Yanks today, which tells me Lilly is saying you have one more shot to sign me or else I'm a Cub. To me, it would be no great loss. Guzman is likely to put up similar numbers to what Lilly would anyway. Lilly is about to get #2 money to post #4 or #5 numbers. Id rather we didnt waste the money.
  12. I don't. I think the focus is Lilly and Meche, like we've been hearing all along. Zito will be choosing between the Mets for 5/75 and the Rangers for 6/100. Yay for overpaying for mediocrity! I pray for trade opportunities to open up.
  13. well Its good to know he atleast tried...It looks like hes going to let no one else get Lilly but him The Cubs have reportedly tweaked their previous offer to Ted Lilly, who could settle on a new team before the close of the winter meetings. Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown said this afternoon that a deal between the Cubs and Lilly remains likely. The Jays have joined the Cubs in offering Lilly a four-year deal, and the Mariners, Giants and Yankees are also supposed to be in the mix. Still, it's looked like Lilly to the Cubs for about two days now. Why the hell cant he be like this for Schimt?? Its possible that Schimdt is really not interested in playing anywhere other than the west coast and is making obsene demands from any other clubs. You never know what the situation is. If he doesnt want to play for us there really is only so much Jim can do to try to change his mind.
  14. I'd bet this gets done in the next 24 hours. Hopefully it doesn't cost us Schmidt. Can we really affoard both? I was under the impression that we couldnt.
  15. Thats more likely, instead of gettting at least 1 good starter we are going to get 1 mediocre and 1 sucky and over pay for both.
  16. Two things, I don't see why it would necessarily cost $175-200m just to field a respectable team. And, 8 years ago people would have said the same thing, only using $75-90m as the number. There have been a heck of a lot of mediocre starting pitchers who have signed for between 8 and 10 million in recent years. This is not completely out of the blue. Plus, baseball balances this out with how cheap young talent is. In football, draftees get 8 figure signings bonuses and count huge against the cap right away. In baseball, you have guys like John Lackey, who has been a good pitcher for 4+ years and has barely made $4 million. Not every team has to sign free agent $10m 4th starters. Some teams, like Oakland, will always be more efficient with their money. You are acting as if everybody is going to look like the Cubs. The Cubs are going to spend more than the vast majority of teams. Because they have to make up for having a crappy farm system and an unwise GM. *sigh*
  17. The first couple of days are always pretty boring, hopefully things heat up a bit tommorow.
  18. Sorry if it was already posted but I thought it was interesting. In other words: I painted myself into a corner and now I'm screwed. He might have had plenty of pitching if he hadnt wasted it trading away for players like Pierre. He did get screwed by injuries but some of that is because of his bad choice in managers.
  19. A piece from Jason Stark's ESPN article today quoting Jim Hendry: Sorry if it was already posted but I thought it was interesting.
  20. Is there some new news they reported on either pitcher? Or is just the same Lilly stuff we've been hearing for a few days? Bruce Levine reports the Cubs are making a run at Jason Schmidt. Where does he report this?
  21. Har! I did have it right before anyone else!
  22. hey Cali, can you explain why next year will be such a mother load?
  23. Sandberg is managing the team in 2007?
