  1. I do like the idea of getting Giles even though I think DeRosa will be productive. I dug this up on rotowire:
  2. Honestly I havent seen enough of him in the past to know if he can turn it around.Tthe few times I watched him last year though he was really bad. I just dont like the idea of getting a guy that gave up almost 5 runs per 9 innings last year. Not to be paying him 13 million a year.
  3. Hudson is not very good and is not likely to improve. He'd have to come pretty cheap in terms of talent given up for me to really be interested. His numbers last year were fairly ugly.
  4. Well, I find it humorous that you refer to Patterson's .263 average seemingly to say he had a mediocre year, but then you use IsoD later in the post. As you probably know, batting average is a really lousy stat to evaluate a player's performance. And by the way, he hit .358 at Iowa. As for AFL, he ranked in the top 10 in BA (there's that stat again!), OBP and OPS, so regardless of it being a hitter's league, he was one of the best players in the league. And, it should be noted that the Southern League traditionally favors pitchers. I don't think I need to do much to say that Patterson had a mediocre year in the SL. His final line was .263/.330/.408 to go along with average at best defense. While I do like Patterson, I just don't see what he has done that justifies drooling over him joining the lineup in 2008. His .358 at Iowa was impressive but it came in only 60 some at bats so I don't think you can use that to form much of an opinion. Patterson definately has more leadoff potential than Pie and definately has a better shot of reaching his upside but Pie's ceiling is so much higher than Patterson's. Much of the recent excitement over EP is because of the numbers he put up in the AFL this fall. Also its not like we have alot of possition players to get excited about, so it doesnt take much.
  5. lol there is already a Schimdt thread bro
  6. Maybe the Cards will sign Meche lol we can hope
  7. Ask any scout in the league, and I bet they'll tell you Cruz has better stuff than Meche. I'm just trying to make the point that you can't always go for the guy with the better potential. Potential just isn't the same thing as production, and Meche's base level of production is exactly what we can expect from our young arms like Guzman or Marshall. Meche has never shown he can produce at a level worth near 9 million more than those guys... nor does he have any more potential than Guzman. Meche isn't a smart signing. Exactly, I just dont see the point of going out and getting more of what you already have. Its very likely that Guzman or Marshall put up as good or better numbers than Meche would.
  8. Well this offseason has been very anti-status quo for Mr. Hendry, the Soriano signing wasnt exactly a "Hendrylike" move either. If he is really going for the gold this season Schimdt makes alot more sense that 2 mediocre backend free agents that you have to hope pan out and over pay for. I think signing Schimdt and hoping someone from within steps up is the better strategy for winning now. We have plenty of "might be good" type pitchers on the roster already why do we need to sign one?
  9. You guys are quickly jumping to conclusions about Gil Meche. You see his numbers and you quickly don't want him. The thing you're not seeing is the potential he has to succeed. He has a very live arm, still pretty young, sharp breaking curveball, and a potential Jason Schmidt changeup in the mix. I see his potential for more of a reason to sign him rather than his numbers. Damnit, you're right. We should throw 30 million at Juan Cruz while we're at it. I was expecting you to post something. Actually, I even made a bet with a fellow nsbb member that you would post something like that. Would you really be happy without a smartass rival? I know I'd surely get bored. Mind you, I'm still waiting on the response as to whether you'd spend that kind of money on Juan Cruz. It was always my opinion that Jaun Cruz would be really good if he would just put on some wieght. He looks like a crack adict.
  10. Jon Heyman from that SI.com article: That sounds like they did some checking into it at least. Sounds like they actually talked to Hendry.
  11. I fear they are going to overpay for 2 lesser free agents like Meche and Marquis, which to me seems like a foolish waste of money. We have guys that pitched last year that are likely to put up similar numbers for far less money. *sigh*
  12. You might not like Igawa but he was a better choice than Meche and Marquis, who we will probably wind up with.
  13. Cause I spit in the face of people who are not cool. Maruis and Meche, Yuck! Heh I think Id rather se Guzman and Marshall and spend that money somewhere else, talk about a waste
  14. Maybe the Cubs people deny any question about an offer and the rumor came from Schimdt's people. Maybe the Cubs dont like for people to know who they have "offered" a contract to, they'd rather wait till its been accepted to leak it to the media. That would explain why the Cubs inside reporters are saying nothing is happening and the national media is running with the story that an offer has been made. The sources are probably from Schimdt's camp or from Shimdt's agent trying to drive the price up. **edit** sorry Bruce this was before your last post, you seem to have nailed it, this is probably from Schimdt's agent just trying to light a fire under some GM's behinds.
  15. Why are so many national media outlets running this as fact without a source? Man media has just gone to the hounds these days.
  16. He already plays a plus major-league CF, and projects to continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Its his hitting game thats not ready. I really think he needs at least 1 more year in AAA, his numbers dont support his being ready yet.
  17. I generaly think Bruce's info is pretty solid but ESPN is running the Cubs offer to Schimdt as one of thier main headlines on ESPN news, so I have a hard time believing that they dont have at least one source if not multiple sources telling them that the Cubs have made an offer. **update** this is also news on Rotowire as well now.
  18. I hope the Cubs got him personaly, we wont know what the true amount was until MLB makes the announcement, I believe this guy could be a solid 3rd-4th starter and having another left hander in the rotation sure would be nice. I think they could get Kei and still get Schimdt, which would give us a very formidable rotation.
  19. Well I dunno what happened lol we still have no word. Maybe I misunderstood. I only listen while in the car so I really dont know what the latest word from XM Homeplate is.
  20. Fingers crossed. I'd be excited if the Cubs won the bidding. It's about time they enter the Japanese market. It'd also be one less rotation hole to fill! I like the attitude that Igawa appears to have. He and Z would be fun to watch. On an unrelated note, Vinestal, who is that in your avatar? That would be Mark DeRosa, Ive taken up being his 1 man fan club sense everyone else seems to hate him.
  21. XM radio Homeplate has been reporting that there will be an anouncement at 5pm est this evening as to who won the bidding.
  22. I thought I read they were just going to rest it though instead of having the surgery, which makes no sense if its chips they will just flare back up again.
  23. Thats why I dont understand why he didnt have surgery on his shoulder this offseason. Instead he went and played in Japan, meaning his throwing is not going to improve. What is the exact nature of his injury I haven't heard anything specific, I think I remember his shoulder being the problem.
  24. Ive never been all that impressed with Zito, I think he would improve signifigantly in the NL though. Im content with the offer, though I dont think the money will be enough. I wont be sad if we dont get him though, Id rather have Schmidt.
