  1. Another vote for Luke Scott. Considering the (low) price, he'd make a ton of sense- 1) He's a left-handed hitter, for which Jim Hendry has a hard-on for some inexplicable reason. So there's that. 2) Even as a lefty, he hits both LH and RH-pitching equally well; .856 OPS vs. righties, .850 OPS vs. lefties. 3) He's not only NOT a product of the juicebox; he's FAR better on the road than at home. Last year he put up a .993 OPS away from MinuteMaid. 4) He's got decent patience AND decent power, two things we're still sorely lacking. Last year his IsoD was .96, and he has a career SLG% of .516. 5) He's younger than both Fukudome and Jenkins. He's certainly not the 'star' bat we're all ideally hoping for, but IMO we could a lot worse (for a lot more money) than Luke Scott.
  2. That's really not a good deal for the Red Sox at all. Why would a team with 6 starting pitchers want another one? And while Drew's contract may be a bit pricey, would they really ditch him for Austin Kearns? Julio Lugo had an awful year at the plate, but I fail to see how Ronny Cedeno would be given the chance to be better, considering the Red Sox will be clear W-S contendors. And not only does Ohman stink, the Sox have one of the best left-handed relievers in all of baseball. And I'm not sure that's such a hot trade for us, either. Drew is probably an upgrade over Murton, but certainly not $14 million worth of one. And Church's value derives from him being a doubles machine while playing center field; if we're not going to play Pie, he should be included in any deal of this magnitude. Giving up our 5th starter and the guy who supposed to become our 'new' 5th starter also isn't that great a prospect for our rotation, though I'm sure we could pick one of Hart/Gallagher to fill in.
  3. Even if this signing is somehow a bait-and-hook for Fukudome, it's unjustified IMO. Would you approve spending $12-14 million over 3 years on a crappy, redundant MIFer to help sign Bobby Abreu or Mark Kotsay circa 2002? Neither would I. Nothing about Fukudome suggests he's so good that he's worth making this sort of move for. If A-Rod offered to sign w/ the Cubs for $15 million a year as long as we signed David Eckstein, I'd do that. But not for this guy. Murton will likely produce an OPS in the .800 -.820 range, and costs $400k and takes up 1 roster spot. Fukudome is projected to produce an OPS anywhere from .800 - .890 based on what I've read here, and could cost $12-15 million a year + $3 million a year for a fellow countryman to come in and ground into 4-3s and get on base 32% of the time. I know which option I'd pick, assuming these were the ONLY two options up for consideration. And we all know they aren't, which makes this whole (assumed) scenario even more maddening.
  4. Agreed. Ethier doesn't really do it for me. I like his IsoD and relative youth, but I don't see the power potential as a LFer; plus his SLG% was pretty much identical for home vs. away, so there isn't overwhelming evidence that he's going to blossom into some huge OPS machine once he gets away from Dodger Stadium.
  5. We have absolutely no excuse not to win this piece of crap of a division with a payroll that high.
  6. FYI- here's Keith Law's take on Fukudome as a prospect...
  7. Agreed. Crawford would add a lot to this team offensively and defensively, but for Rich Hill and what may be the top offensive prospect (albeit in a weak system) I would like someone that is an .850 OPS guy with a little more power than CC can provide. I'd see if they would accept Marshall and a couple of better prospects, though. Crawford's numbers would jump when he gets out of that giant cyclinder they have in tampa. Yea. 2007: .874 OPS on the road .764 OPS at home 2005: .850 OPS on the road .748 OPS at home 2006 seems a bizarre outlier. His OPS was almost identical on the road and at home, and actually a tough higher at home (.836 vs .823). No clue what's going on there.
  8. I hope you're right, but I still want to see the fine print on whether or not we sent any cash to Detroit along with Jock.
  9. I'd rather keep Jacque if this is the garbage we'd get for him via trade.
  10. I wouldn't have any problem paying Santana $20 million a year. It's the length of the contract that would worry me. 4 or 5 years? Sure, why not. But no way in heck would I ever give a starting pitcher a 6-8 year deal. Way too much stress is put on their livelihood (their right or left arms) way too often to rely on them producing for that far into the future. But yea, the dollars per year wouldn't bother me. You wouldn't pay $20 million a year to have 200 guaranteed innings of sub-3.00 ERA and 1.10-WHIP pitching? I definitely would...just not for 8 years.
  11. Brandon Wood will be a Marlin soon enough. Miguel Cabrera, come on down! Honestly, if I am the Marlins I would ask for Kendry Morales over Brandon Wood. I don't know that much about either prospect but for a guy with Cabrera's talent couldn't they get both? Yes, they could. Anaheim doesn't have much reason not to offer both. That deal would be very beneficial for both teams. Your basic no brainer. Imagine if they traded for Miggy and signed ARod? They could deal their SS Cabrera (I think) and get back some decent starter. I think the Angels could make some moves that could cause a sonic boom this year. A-Rod, Miggy and Vlad as your 3-4-5 hitters would be categorically unfair.
  12. The range of his power projections make me nervous. I've read some scouts project 40+ HRs/year and others more in the 25 range, which would render him a less sure-handed Alex Gonzalez (the 'booted double play' one, not the one with the Reds). His lack of average and high strikeout totals don't really bother me as long as he can play SS AND hit for this tremendous power some seem to think he has, but I'm pretty skeptical. No way would I give up multiple major league regulars for him at this stage...prospects, definitely.
  13. I was just thinking the Sox could use a few more overpriced veterans to flesh out their 72-90 squad.
  14. Don't sweat it- I proposed we trade for Juan Encarcion back in July. Lord knows what I was smoking.
  15. Buster Olney wrote in his blog today that the Marlins would ask the Dodgers for LaRoche, Kershaw and possibly Matt Kemp. So yea...don't see this one happening for us.
  16. He's not gonna fetch us much regardless, and would only really appeal to a few organizations who value his youth + OBP. If we can sign a masher to play RF, I'd have no problem packaging him with some prospects to get an impact player (possibly at SS), but otherwise I'd rather us just stick him in right and let him play for once. His value to us as a full-time outfielder is probably more than what he could fetch via trade on his own.
  17. How about a compromise, where we keep the live home umpire but give teams the chance to 'challenge' a ball/strike call. The challenge would then be taken to QuesTec or whatever where the actual location of pitch would be used to possibly overturn the umpire's call.
  18. That's the only course of action that could salvage this "plan" in my opinion.
  19. Don't see how this makes sense on any level. Dempster is mildly effective as a reliever because his two (somewhat mediocre) pitches aren't nearly as exposed in 1 inning doses as they would be as a starter. Having to start - and thus losing velocity and the element of unfamiliarity with the hitters - will just render him less effective. And if this is some sort of precursor to a trade, it's a lousy one. If we're truly trying to trade Marshall, why go out and announce to the world that we already have his replacement? Doesn't that lower Marshall's trade value by letting teams know we don't need him as a starter anyway? If Hendry really thinks Dempster can be an adequate replacement for whatever starter we may be shopping, he should keep it to himself so other teams (in trade talks) perceive that we're giving up more than maybe we actually are. I'm sorry but I just don't see this at all.
  20. Stupid. Yea Jim would rather invest in crap like Jason Marquis, Neifi Perez, Steve freaking Trachsel, etc etc etc.. then a guy with talent. The sooner Hendrys ass leaves Chicago the better. Why is this so out of line? I'm sure other teams would want a option for 2009 also. He's not due back until the ASB, and even then you don't know what he'll give you. I thought he was on schedule for spring training?
  21. DeRosa and his 10 HRs was just too much power, I guess.
