  1. Cueto sucks on the road, but admittedly has been pretty decent in June and July.
  2. Cards draw Cole Hamels tonight. So we got that going for us...
  3. I get the feeling the only way we're gonna score tonight is if Cain walks 4 in a row.
  4. Indians now 11.5 GB back of the White Sox...gotta think the C.C. Sabathia rumor mill will only get stronger.
  5. Regarding Khalil Greene, remember that OBP isn't the only thing our lineup needs to upgrade; despite playing in a hitter-friendly park (in a division full of them, no less), the Cubs were 8th in the NL in SLG% last year. Granted having Soriano for that month while he was hurt might've bumped us up a spot (at most), but the fact remains we were nearly as power-starved last season as we were on-base starved. The signing of Fukudome addresses the latter; inserting Greene as an upgrade over Theriot addresses the former. While we wouldn't necessarily gain OBP in that switch, the difference in SLG% would be massive, and would definitely fit in our lineup as that extra power would capitalize on the upgraded OBP in the spots higher up in the lineup. Put Greene at 7th (ahead of Pie and the P spot) and I'd venture he could drive in 90 next year. He'd also upgrade our defense at SS, which while not a major consideration taking into account the flyball staff we have (sans Marquis, and that's only on good days), definitely should factor in.
  6. Adam Everett's like the worst everyday player at the plate in major league baseball.
  7. Trading Hill for Bedard isn't a step backward; it's simply not necessarily a step forward. While I don't think it's particularly likely that Hill's age 28 season resembles Bedard's, Hill is still a likely bet to improve and is far cheaper than Bedard. Bedard's also only had one season on the level of his 2007; not a guarantee that he replicates it. Basically, giving up Hill + prospects for Bedard seems kinda silly. We're probably better off just keeping Hill and taking whatever it is he gives us.
  8. Yea, and in fact even more since Houston gave up 5 players for Miggy (and you mentioned 4 Cubs' prospects). Gallapher and Patton are probably comparable, and obviously Luke Scott and Murton is a good comparison. Judging by his K/IP numbers, it seems like Sarfate has way more upside than Marshall (even though Sarfate is already 26) if he ever gets his control figured out, though Marshall is the only pitcher mentioned here who's actually had some sort of sustained success at the major league level. Albers seems kinda bleh to me, but is 24 and was well-regarded by the Stros; I might consider him like a Hart or someone from our end. I'd probably rather have Costanzo than Patterson if I were dealing. So to your point- Marshall, Gallagher, Murton, E-Patt and I guess Kevin Hart would be a ton to give up for a 33-year old 3B coming off an injury who makes $13 million.
  9. Im sure some Cubs fans wouldn't mind trading Pie for a SS and making Soriano-Fukudome-Murton the OF for the next 4 years. This is what I'd prefer, ideally.
  10. Assuming he's healthy, I'd be fine with that deal. Burnett had 176 Ks in 165 IPs las year with a 119 ERA+. Problem is of course, he's almost never healthy for an entire season. He also makes a boatload of money, though is still relatively young.
  11. If the Twins are seriously considering deals like Hughes + Cabrera (NYY) or Ellsbury + Lester (BOS) then Hendry would be an idiot not to at least throw Hill + Pie out there and see where that gets us. At worst, that's a very comparable package to those of the Yankees and the Red Sox.
  12. There's a blurb linked on the front page of ESPN.com discussing how Hendry is apparently open to trading Prior (per rival executives). Here's an excerpt:
  13. Agreed. I'd make the team option for 2009 a relatively high amount to put Mark and his agent at ease (in the event that Mark returns to effectiveness this year) over taking a 2-year deal with a low base salary in the coming year (2008).
  14. That's pure hilarity if they honestly expect anyone to bite on that.
  15. Holy crap, lol. $57 million for Francisco Cordero?
  16. No...no he wasn't. An 87 OPS+ and a .638 OPS away from Coors Field does not scream "let's give this 32-year old second baseman a 3 year deal." If Matsui could play an above average SS defensively, then MAYBE you could begin to justify him as an upgrade over Theriot, but Kaz plays 2B exclusively. This move is literally [expletive].
  17. I've always been a big Church fan, but working out a fair trade with Bowden is about as likely as me winning the lottery tomorrow. That guy would ask for Pie, Gallagher and Colvin if we inquired about their team equipment manager.
  18. I think $5 mil is a little steep for a reliever who pitched 24 innings last year and has probably never pitched on back to back days in his entire career. $5 million isn't insane for a solid ML closer- I'm fine with that. But I'm not entirely comfortable with the assumption that Kerry will automatically be that just because he's returning and because we're going to let him try his hand at closer. Ultimately, I'm fine for signing him just because it'd be ridiculous to let him leave this organization considering the money we've thrown at complete and utter garbage over the past few years. Not the best logic, but it has at least some relevance here.
