  1. Relax, he ain't gettin' 10/300 unless it's from a franchise like Baltimore that is just desperate to make a "splash" after their GM-hiring debacle.
  2. Brian Cashman confirmed (the obvious) that the Yankees will sit down with CJ Wilson and his agent as soon as possible.
  3. Definitely would be interested in Aaron Hill at the right place. Guy seems like he could recapture some of his form from a few years ago over here in the weaker NL.

  5. Decline! Run for the hills! Whether you choose to acknowledge them or not, there are definitely warning signs with some of Pujols's 2011 peripherals: Walk rate 2008 - 16.2% 2009 - 16.4% 2010 - 14.7% 2011 - 9.4% Strikeout-to-walk ratio 2008 - 0.52 2009 - 0.56 2010 - 0.74 2011 - 0.95 Extra-base hit percentage 2008 - 12.6% 2009 - 13.3% 2010 - 11.7% 2011 - 10.1% Ground ball to fly ball ratio 2008 - 0.68 2009 - 0.63 2010 - 0.61 2011 - 0.81 It's not just fewer walks. It's also more strikeouts, more ground balls, and fewer extra-base hits. It could all just be a result of him "stressing" about his contract year or whatever, but there is definitely some cause for concern for any front office pursuing a guy who's going to be 32 on Opening Day 2012 who just put up career-worst results in a handful notable secondary metrics.
  6. @Kevin_Goldstein Kevin Goldstein Prospects. Plural, and good ones. RT @CoreyD06: @Kevin_Goldstein what kind of compensation is Boston asking for?
  7. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/25/cardinals-offer-to-albert-pujols-likely-to-remain-in-the-range-of-22-million-per-year/ According to a Cardinals reporter, the Cardinals are "inclined" to offer Pujols a deal in the range of $22 to $22.5 million annually.
  8. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/22/mvp-candidate-matt-kemp-likely-to-seek-extension-with-dodgers/
  9. Reyes scares the crap out of me for a number of reasons, not least of which are his crazy BABIP, injury history, and the fact that his greatest assets (speed and ability to play SS) are likely to decline both with age and his continuing hamstring issues.
  10. Phil Rogers just published a piece a little over an hour ago saying that people around baseball believe Ricketts really really wants Epstein and also that according to ubiquitous and anonymous "baseball people" around the league, it may not be that farfetched a notion. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/09/12/tom-ricketts-wants-theo-epstein/
  11. Here's a far more promising "article" from Cubs Insider (I know, I know) posted a few hours ago: http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-insider/2011/09/theo-epstein-to-cubs-is-more-real-than-you-think/ I agree that at the end of the day, it'll be Beane or a young, up-and-coming Assistant GM somewhere. I think Epstein is smartly using the buzz about the Cubs GM position to increasing his bargaining power for an extension with the Red Sox.
  12. Feel like Wells could be a solid #4 and maybe even a decent/mid-tier #3 if he keeps improving. His command the past 2 months or so has been superb.
  13. Randy Wells is quietly putting together a very solid second half.
  14. I went to the game last night in Citi Field and sat a few rows behind the Cubs dugout. Two thoughts: 1) Cashner was absolutely dealing. He was clocked consistently at 98, and a few of his fastballs touched 99. Granted, these velocities were as measured by the stadium gun (and thus, shown on the main outfield scoreboard), but still; the back-end of the Mets' lineup had literally zero chance against him. I think I remember noticing that at one point, 12 of his 14 pitches were for strikes. 2) Got the chance to meet Tom Ricketts last night. (Yes, he was at the game; not interviewing Brian Cashman...at least not between 7:05 and about 10:15 ET, anyway.) He took a picture with me and when I told him I was glad he was "our owner" (I was several beers in, sorry), he then assured me, "Don't worry, we're gonna get this thing turned around." Hope he's right.
  15. Upton has an absolutely absurd home/road split this year: .565 OPS (55 OPS+) at home vs. an .827 OPS (134 OPS+) on the road.
  16. There is a lot of truth in that, but that offense isn't as bad on paper as it has been reality. Losing Posey really hurt, but while an offense with Sandoval, Huff, Tejada, Ross, etc. (and now Beltran) wasn't going to be good, it shouldn't be this bad. But yeah, Sabean's teams have won in spite of him. I have to admit I'm irrationally angry about how they've jerked Brandon Belt around for the better part of an entire season. If they honestly had just brought him up in May and let him get 4 ABs a night, who names (1) where he'd be as a hitter and (2) how many more wins the Giants might have.
  17. FWIW, Andy MacPhailure is reportedly stepping down as Orioles' President / VP after the season, however neither he nor the Orioles have yet confirmed this. If true, this would add another franchise in search of a new GM whom the Cubs would be "competing with" in vetting GM candidates.
  18. Sabean deserves all of the blame for the Giants' fade this season. That offensive is reprehensibly bad and Ray Charles could see that relying on washed-up veterans like Tejada, Ross, Huff, Burrell, Torres, etc. for a full 162-game season is just begging for trouble. And the decision to go with a 37-year-old Tejada at SS deserves firing on its own merit.
  19. Still think Toronto ends up with either Pujols or Fielder. They have money to spend, a hole at 1B, and are apparently itching to make a splash on the FA market this winter.
  20. Wells has been pretty darn solid in August. Granted, he pitched against a AAA team tonight, but still. Would love to be able to slide him into the #4 spot next year and count on a 4ish ERA. The upgrade of a now-healthy Wells over Coleman, Russell, Ortiz, Lopez, etc. is significant.
  21. On the contrary, The CUBS are 2 for 29 with RISP over their last 4 games, and Byrd is now 0 for 5 over the same span..... so you see, it's not strange at all, in fact, it's quite common. That was sarcasm in its purest form, Fred. Marlon has killed us in run-producing opportunities all year. Fred Baker vs. lefties on the other hand...
  22. Solid outing for Wells. Saw a pitches hit 93 on the gun on the Fox broadcast.
