  1. I'm in the don't trade him unless someone is willing to make a ridiculous, top prospect filled offer. Luckily, that's the same camp that Epstein and Hoyer are in. I'm in the "leverage this asset as fully as possible" camp. If management doesn't foresee us being competitive until 2014 or later, I'd prefer to find a trading partner sooner rather than later. If having him for 2012 just means we'll lose 90 games instead of 95 (or whatever), there's really no reason not to at least explore trade possibilities. It's really just a more pronounced version of the Marshall trade; if you're not in a position to fully utilize an asset, you find a way to get something in return that you will be ready when you are.
  2. At this point, there is no reason to start Jackson anywhere but in AAA.
  3. I wouldn't go far. He concludes only that it doesn't "look as bad as he originally thought," noting:
  4. Cubs insider on the PSD forums hearing / reporting that the compensation will be Chris Carpenter.
  5. Hopefully that statement is a well-crafted "non-denial denial," to so speak.
  6. FWIW, here are the last 2 posts from the Cubs insider on the PSD forum:
  7. The $9 million AAV and granting him free agency as a 30-year old--presumably right when he'd be in his prime and looking for a big pay day--makes me alright with the Cubs not signing him to a comparable deal. That's a lot of risk for both sides. I would've loved him a 6 year deal for $30 million because (1) it's not a lot of money, either in AAV or total; (2) if he panned out, we'd reap the benefits of his prime age 28-32 seasons; and (3) if he didn't pan out, he'd be cheap enough to move. A 4-year deal at $9 million per makes it much more difficult for the As to trade him if it appears by year 2 or year 3 that he isn't going to be the .780 OPSish center-fielder that scouts were hoping for.
  8. Kevin Goldstein @Kevin_Goldstein Outstanding. Would be single digit pick in draft. “@AnthonyRescan: @kevin_goldstein what's Soler's potential like?.”
  9. Turner is a much higher-rated prospect than Archer was when we dealt him.
  10. The last time Cabrera tried to play 3B was in 2008 with the Tigers. He committed 5 errors in 14 games, good for -3 runs (TZR below average). Surely he's gonna be just fine 3+ years later and who knows how many pounds heavier.
  11. So by 2014, their best 3 position players will all being a sh*tload of money and will be best-suited to play DH. Oh, and Justin Verlander's current deal will be expiring: 2014 salaries: Cabrera - $22 million Martinez - $12 million Fielder - $23.8 million* Verlander - $ 12 million So for that record, they'll be paying over $57 million for three DHs. *Assuming, without knowing the full details of the contract, that the AAV is constant throughout Fielder's new 9-year deal (which it surely won't be, of course)
  12. Sickels posted his ranking of the systems today. The Cubs come in at #20: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/1/23/2728027/2012-baseball-farm-system-rankings-prospects
  13. I was going to ask for a link to Braun publicly admitting to the synthetic-testosterone-as-herpes-treatment angle.
  14. The Dodgers are going to be really big spenders next year, especially after having a few down years. That's the one thing I worry about with Theo's plan about rebuilding this year because next year there might be some really big market teams going after whichever FAs make it to free agency. In a "normal" free agent year with all the big spenders you wouldn't be seeing Fielder and Boras trying to save face with one of the games best hitters. Phil Rogers in today's Tribune wrote that the Dodgers sale could be completed by early February. Could the Dodgers still be in play for Fielder this year? No http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/01/22/mlb-execs-think-dodgers-will-be-in-play-for-prince-fielder/
  15. Pretty crazy that there's a chance Fielder may end up with a contract half the number of years in length as Pujols. Pujols is obviously the better player, but considering the 4-year age difference, the respective talents of their agents, and the fact that Pujols's deal came first--seemingly setting the market for Fielder--I feel like Prince has to be one disappointed man right about now.
  16. This. Turner's minor league K rates aren't great, but Porcello's major league ones are abominable. Throw in the fact that Turner is younger and cheaper, and it's really a no-brainer as to which player would be preferable in a trade with the Cubs.
  17. His BABiP was .266 last season, way off his career average of .302. Keep him, hope he has a (relative for him) bounce-back first half, and then try again at the July trading deadline.
  18. Yankees now have a glut of starting pitchers and could use a DH. How about a swap of bad contracts involving Soriano and Burnett? Edited to say with $$$ and/or a pitching prospect of some value coming back, wish is certainly wishful thinking.
  19. Edwin Jackson is apparently seeking a 5 year / $60 million deal. His agent is none other than Boras, Scott.
  20. MLB Trade Rumors reporting (i.e., copying from some beat reporter) that we asked the Yankees for all 3 of Montero, Banuelos, and Betances from the Yankees. As expectedly, the Yankees...were not pleased. Link: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/boras-seeks-five-years-for-edwin-jackson.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
  21. I'm a bit skeptical about baseball people in an organization rife with developmental failure being able to suddenly adapt to something likely totally different than has been dictated in the past. Our minor league development structure has scared the sh*t out of me ever since I read that interview with Sam Fuld following his trade to TBR.
  22. On page 11 of this thread, Question Mark Grace had a great post re: projecting players' skills and production from the Cuban league to the MLB:
