  1. Rizzo adds an RBI double, giving Iowa a 1-0 lead. Brett and Rizzo are now each 1/2 with a 2B and a K. Randy Wells is pitching well so far: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 4 Ks / 2 BBs.
  2. Early on, B-Jax 1/1 with a 2B and Rizzo 0/1 with a K.
  3. Dude took 3 BBs yesterday and has 1 already today. Ridiculous for a 19-year-old to have a 0.121 ISOD after so few at bats (or at all).
  4. Career WAR from Baseball-Reference: Rivera - 58 Maddux - 103.6 Clemens - 142.8
  5. Yea. It's definitely an "issue" now, whether or not it was already. The kicker for me is that the Angels are already 7.5 games back of the Rangers. It's not like the Angels are tearing up the league and can afford to wait around for Pujols to figure things out. Games in April and May count, too.
  6. Worst stat in all of sports. That or the Save statistic. Even more than W/L, I feel like the Save has actually dictated and affected the development of the on-field product. Because of the Save, every team needs a "Closer" and said "Closer" is only allowed to pitch in "Save situations."
  7. I feel informed after this post. The Orioles apparently told Bundy before the season that he was going to be capped at 120 innings one way or the other, and that it was Bundy's call whether those innings were distributed: (1) in 3 to 5-inning outings spread across the entire season, or (2) longer outings in a compressed season before being shut down once the limit was hit. Apparently Bundy chose the former. Not sure how I feel about giving a teenage HS prospect discretion over his own development, but that's apparently what happened. I don't think a general innings limit is a horrible thing for a pitching prospect coming out of HS, though I worry that they may actually be stunting hi development as a starter by not allowing him to go through lineups a second or third time. As a starter, he's going to have to eventually learn how to grind through a lineup that's already seen him once through and show them different pitches and off-speed offerings to generate outs; so far he really hasn't had to do that.
  8. IIRC he's had injuries before and I know some people didn't love his mechanics. Time for some stem cells... I recall reading on MLB Trade Rumors or Hardball Talk or one of those sites that the Yankees and Ms supposedly first discussed King Felix, and that the Ms wanted all 3 of Montero, Betances, and Banuelos. Obviously the Yankees balked at that and explored Pineda instead. I bring this up because if true, the difference between the 2 offer packages would give me pause as a Yankees exec. Felix is better than Pineda, but is also older and far more expensive. So while he should cost more to acquire via trade, wouldn't you have been struck at how much more the Mariners wanted for him than for Pineda?
  9. Phil Hughes is sucking again; unless Andy Pettite is chilling in the fountain of youth or has discovered a time machine, the Yankees may very well be in the market for an SP come the deadline. I would speculate that Garza might be able to fetch one of the two Bs (Betances / Benuelos) and maybe a lesser prospect; I doubt you'd get both of the Bs and/or Sanchez, Bichette Jr., those kind of guys.
  10. B-Jax finished 2/4 with a SB and 0 Ks. Rizzo finished 2/3, including a 2B, and a BB.
  11. Comment From Britt What are your expectations for Anthony Rizzo at the ML level, once he's called up to Wrigley later this summer? Is his newly shortened swing cause for optimism? Monday April 23, 2012 1:43 Britt 1:43 Dan Szymborski: It's certainly good to see him continuing to hit in Iowa, rather than Tucson or Portland, much easier places to play. Monday April 23, 2012 1:43 Dan Szymborski 1:44 Dan Szymborski: Iowa, of course, is still in the PCL, but it's one of thsoe less crazy PCL places that carried over when teh American Association was dissolvoed.
  12. It depends on each player's draft class and what all of the clubs in aggregate have done with players in that class. If B-Jax is among the top 17% in terms of quickest promotion to, and accumulation of service time in, the Majors, then we'd lose that extra year of club control. Regardless of any financial or "business"-related reason for not promoting, there are plenty of "baseball"-related ones for not doing so, too. (See, e.g., his strikeout rate.) There is literally no reason to promote him at any point before he both (1) is clear of Super 2 status and (2) has wrestled his contact issues to the ground sufficiently so that he won't be doomed to fail once he arrives at Wrigley.
  13. Rizzo with another RBI single. He and B-Jax are now each 2/3 with 0 strikeouts on the night.
  14. Brett Jackson singles in his first AB, in which he saw 8 pitches.
  15. And on cue, the Sox have Daniel Bard going tomorrow. Who knows, maybe with a little grit, heart, and determination, he might be able to make it a full 5 innings before tallying 120+ pitches.
  16. Bobby Valentine is basically the Bizarro King Midas at this point. Everything this guy touches turns to [expletive]. Nice hire, Lucchino.
  17. From a Baseball Prospectus earlier this afternoon (apologies in advance for the crappy question, I fired it off quickly without much thought): Britt (New York, NY): What kind of ceiling do you predict for Brett Jackson (CF) of the Cubs' system? I've heard predictions ranging from Drew Stubbs to Ray Lankford. Does he have All-Star potential in center, or should I be concerned about his woefully high strikeout rate? Daniel Rathman: The strikeout rate is definitely a concern, but he has enough secondary skills to be valuable even as a .250 hitter. Drew Stubbs seems an inapt comparison because so much of Stubbs' value is tied to his outstanding defense. The big question for me is whether he can stick in center. If Jackson has to move to right, that would obviously put more pressure on his bat, and might only make him a second-division type.
  18. Len & Bob have officially jumped the shark and moved on to topics more interesting than the actual game.
  19. With an offense OPSing .642 on the year, I'd say that last run pretty much does it.
  20. I can't decide whether our offense is best described as anemic, abominable, or impotent. This is hard, you guys; I don't take these things lightly.
  21. Curious to see how the Giants will find a way to use the Brian Wilson injury to do something nonsensical involving Brandon Belt.
  22. Rizzo is amused by the simplicity of the PCL.
  23. Not only that, but who would've thought we'd pile up 17 runs (!) against Greinke and Wainwright after the craptastic offense we displayed in our first 6 games.
