  1. John Sickels on Javy Baez: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/6/22/3109322/minor-league-prospect-notes-june-22-2012
  2. Yea. I'd be shocked if the Phillies were sellers in 2012. They're only 5 games behind the two current WC holders, Halladay is due back soon, it's Ruben Amaro, and even if Howard and Utley are no longer "Howard and Utley," think about who'll they be replacing: Ty Wigginton (.707 OPS, 91 OPS+) and Mike Fontenot (now that Freddy Galvis and his sterling .617 OPS will not be available for the next 50 games). I'm not saying I would push full-steam ahead with this geriatric crew, but I have a hard time seeing Amaro blowing it up at this point.
  3. Agreed. As with Soler and less so Cespedes, this seems like exactly the type of investment we should be making given the multi-year rebuild, new CBA, the club's finances, and the dearth of talent throughout the organization.
  4. Has anyone noticed Colby Rasmus lately? Kid is hitting for massive power these days, including 2 HRs last night. Now up to .259 / .319 / .486 on the season. A .486 slug from your CF spot doesn't suck.
  5. He didn't start throwing the knuckleball until the 2006 season, so this is his seventh season throwing it. He was pretty good each of the past two years and had a solid year in the minors in 2007. So roughly half the time he's been throwing it (including three of the five years he's spent in the majors), he's been at least good. He also throws many more knuckleballs now than he did prior to joining the Mets, speaking in terms of the proportion of total pitches he throws.
  6. RF presumably sees less action than LF and unlike at Wrigley, it's not harder to play than LF, so I'm good with putting the better fielders in left and center. I'm guessing it doesn't have anything to do with actual defensive ability. It's to get LaHair comfortable when Rizzo comes up. Agreed. This move reeks of the Cubs officially starting Operation: Work Rizzo Into the Everyday Lineup, Any Way You Can.
  7. As soon as I read this I figured it was a not-so-veiled attempt to keep him from muddying up his pristine statistics before consummating a trade. Pretty hilarious / awesome, actually.
  8. Throw in Rizzo and maybe the Nats might not hang up in under 5 seconds.
  9. After 14 innings in today's epic Royals / Cardinals tilt, Alex Gordon is 0/2. Oh, and with 5 WALKS. That's right. He's 0/2 with 5 BBs. In one game.
  10. It only makes sense that we offer to pay the bulk of Dempster or Soriano's remaining salary in any trades. The new CBA has limited our ability to outspend other clubs in the draft and with international free agents, while the FA pool is thinning with more franchises locking up their talent with team-friendly deals. The Cubs have money, but can't spend it in the draft or on attractive free gents. Although I wouldn't quite label it a new "market inefficiency," buying prospects via trades is honestly our best option to upping the overall talent level of the organization.
  11. Kevin_Goldstein: Dear world: You don't have to send me a tweet every time Javier Baez hits a home run. Much love, KG.
  12. Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisBA #Cubs sign 4th-rder Josh Conway for $280k (pick value=$343,200). #CoastalCarolina RHP had 94-96 FB, nasty SL before TJ surgery. #mlbdraft
  13. Yep, just to clarify he's 2/2 with a single and a HR. He had an .850 OPS in A coming into tonight. So yea.
  14. @nbaliva See the clock on upper corner of scoreboard? Javy Baez just cleared it with his 3rd homer of season #crushed http://pic.twitter.com/srMBsf6G
  15. Brett Jackson finished 0/4 with 3 Ks, while Vitters went 1/4 with a single and an error (his 10th). Soto was 1/4 with a 2B, but played DH.
  16. Including last night's game in which he went 2/4 with a HR, a BB, and 2 SBs, Trout now stands at .354 / .412 / .565 (.977) with 15 SBs. He's honestly a legit MVP candidate right now. At 20 years old. Disgusting.
  17. Exactly. In the abstract, 9 years / $30 million would be crazy for any draft pick not named Strasburg or Harper. But given the impending rule change, Soler's status as an international FA, and the restrictions on taking advantage of efficiencies in the Rule 4 draft, 9 years / $30 million is understandable.
  18. Agreed. I feel there's a distinction between the player and the prospect. I think I like the Soler contract because of its length and the Cubs' control over Soler's prime mid-to-late 20s, but prefer Cespedes as a player because he plays CF and is already producing in the major leagues. It's not a guarantee that Soler will ever make it to the majors, much less produce. In other words, Soler is still just a prospect; Cespedes is a fully functioning major league CFer. All said and done, I think I still prefer our deal with Soler vis-a-vis the As' deal with Cespedes just because of the length.
  19. Kevin Goldstein ‏@Kevin_Goldstein I said I'd be surprised if Soler got to $30m, but I never saw nine years. That's a great deal that definitely limits risk.
  20. ‏@Kevin_Goldstein Jorge Soler is a RF profile guy. BIG power, big arm, ok fielder, holes in swing. He's not historic and he's seen as ready for Low-A.
  21. Huge day for Jackson and Rizzo so far. Jackson is 2/2 with a single, a HR, a SB, and a BB. Rizzo is 2/3 with a single and a HR.
  22. FWIW, Kevin Goldstein said on his most recent "Up & In" Baseball Prospectus podcast that Soler is the "prototypical" corner OF prospect and has plus-plus power that grades as "at least a 70" on the 20/80 scale, "if not higher." I know he's also tweeted on many an occasion that Soler would've easily been a top 10 pick in this year's draft were he eligible.
