  1. The WBC will be such a relief from March Madness, I don't give a rip about college basketball. Morgan's no treat, but I'm so starved for baseball that I'll live with it and mute when necessary.
  2. Not from me, I'm right there with you. I'd rather keep Williams and Murton than Pie and Hill, for many reasons. You're more likely to get an impact player for Pie/Hill, Murton/Williams are more suited to contributing right now, which is our window while Z, Prior, Aramis and Lee are relatively young and under contract. Plus, I think in 25 years Murton will be the better OF, and I think Williams is criminally undervalued. I'm not sure we can wait that long on Murton. At least by then he'll be old enough to where we'll be more confident that Baker will start him. If Baker's still here 25 years from now, I'm marching on the Tribune Towers with torch in hand. Of course, in the future it'll be more like jetpacking, and with a photon cannon in hand. It's kind of sad that I envision the personal jetpack becoming a reality before the Cubs win the WS.
  3. Not to nitpick, but I think you've reversed them. Dr. Henry Jekyll was the scientist, while Edward Hyde was his deranged alter-ego.
  4. Of my autographs from Cubs players I have: baseball card signed by Mark Grace homemade sign signed by Ryne Sandberg baseball cap signed by Billy Williams, Dave Otto, Chuck Crim, Bob Scanlan, and Heath Slocumb. and a program signed by Doug Dascenzo and Shawn Boskie. Except for the Grace card which I mailed to him and recieved back, I got all the autographs outside the players' lot at Wrigley, in the early 90's when I was but a lad.
  5. Though it's been mentioned the opportunity cost of getting Thome vs. ARam/Lofton, I don't think anyone's pointed out the other big trade before the 2003 season, that being Hundley to LAD for Karros/Grudz. If we'd signed Thome, Choi would ride the bench in 03 and there would be no need to go get another 1B. So we'd likely have been stuck with Hundley or traded him for another salary dump (whose return would almost certainly have contributed less than did Karros and Grudz in 03).
  6. Though I can actually taste the vomit in the back of my my throat, I'm wondering if the Cubs made a mistake in not offering Burnitz arbitration. By all accounts the availability of a quality RF is doubt, and any one of Jones/Encarnacion/Wilson aren't likely to be appreciably better than JB, and with a platoon we'd be lucky to get the same production from RF that we got last year, not mention wasting two roster spots. If nothing else, Burnitz always gave his full effort and almost always had a smile on his face. It's just my preception, but he seemed to be a good clubhouse guy (not that it really mattered eventually). What are the chances JB would've accepted if the cubs had offered?
  7. He'd do it too, if he saw someone was drowning. He's a friggin hero. Maybe the D-Backs would sign Nomar to play deep RF/lifeguard at the BOB pool  Yeah, Hendry was so myopic on having Furcal at short that he totally limited his options. Nomar's production would look good at any number of positions in our lineup, I think he could even make a passable RF. If Nomar signs with another team to play an OF spot, I hope Hendry get's drilled at the convention on the supposed comment that he made to the contrary. I'm also pissed that we didn't find a way to keep him on this team.
  8. So right now you'd advocate standing ©pat? horrible pun, sorry. CPAT has a chance to turn it around, but that chance greatly improves in a different uniform. His numbers are nowhere near what you'd need from a corner outfielder. Two unprovens in Murton and Cedeno could work out, or not. I'd like to see them start if we had a bonafide producer in RF. on the other hand, that above lineup leaves a lot of payroll open for acquring a solid starter or making a big move mid-season. I take the proactive aproach- do the Tejada deal, but try to keep Williams or Guzman. Flip them a PTBNL if necessary. Then make a trade for Floyd. Would Walker + Novoa + Ryu get it done if we take on all his salary? I guess it hinges on a Manny trade.
  9. I didn't see this posted anywhere, so... Julio gets 2yr/2.2M from Mets  Anyone else surprised to see Julio get two years? Omar Minaya's got some serious bro-love for that man. Maybe he thought the team could use a grandfatherly figure around, to teach them how to whittle, tell old war stories and get the occasional pinch hit. If there's one thing you can say about Julio Franco is that he keeps himself in superior shape. If there's another thing you can say, it's that he sure does love him some Jesus.
  10. This looks like a fun way to waste time. Here's my L team: Starters= CF Lofton SS F. Lopez 1B D. Lee (the reason I chose this letter) LF C. Lee RF Lane 3B Lowell 2B Loretta C J. Lopez Bench= 1B LaRoche SS Lugo C LaRue OF Lawton OF Langerhans Rotation= Lackey Cl. Lee Lieber Lowe Loaiza Pen= Lidge Linebrink Looper Lowry Loe Leicester I'd be banking on one more decent season from Kenny Lofton, but CF is a weak position for this letter. Also, I could see LaRue or even LoDuca outproducing Javy Lopez, but it's pretty much a wash as far as I can see. I would hope for a return to pre-2005 form in Lowell and Loretta. Rotation's pretty thin, pen's even thinner. Lowry could be the long relief/spot starter. All in all, a pretty decent team, not amazing.
  11. I don't know if it's been posted yet, but maybe Neifi received a smiliar offer from another team to start, then gave Hendry a chance to match, which he did most likely at the strong urging of dusty. Perhaps that could mean he's hasn't been signed as a starter though he still wound up with starter money.
  12. You'd think since there are entire networks devoted to golf and auto racing, there ought to be a baseball network. I surmise the reason we haven't seen it yet is $$$, perhaps it would cut into MLB's licensing fees or violate the agreements that baseball has with existing networks.
  13. I'd say JH should offer Fookie 4/36 with a 5th year vasting option at 10M or a 2M buyout. And offer him special perks in his contract like a 24 hour on-call chauffer, a case of sparking cider for celebrations, or even an apartment in the Wrigleyville area so that, should he go out and get tanked, he could walk instead of drive. It maybe seems like a bit much, but you'd want to take every percaution so that he wouldn't screw up again. There should also be a clause voiding the contract if he gets another DUI. I've heard it would mean deportation. He and Aramis are countrymen and near the same age, I think our third baseman should put in a call or visit on behalf of the Cubs. It's also got to be a draw having Lee corraling your throws to first. Are there any other Cubs who don't drink at all/anymore? Having that kind of mental support could prove valuable.
  14. Not to overly defend Braves fans, but Game One was scheduled at 4pm, and many people that I talked to here could not attend due to work. Additionally, traffic in ATL is godawful every afternoon, throw in a Braves game and it's gridlocked for hours, so there are always more fans that show up late. Still, Braves fans in general are pretty nonchalant about the playoffs, even the most hardcore ones have no confidence in their team come postseason play. Kinda sad... Well I am going to Game Two tonight (taking public transportation, thank you very much) and I would like nothing more than to see Clemens get absolutely shelled
  15. when I read just the title of this thread my first thought was that they've extended dusty's contract...
  16. Corey clearly can't stay in Chicago, his performance and attitude have seriously rubbed fans the wrong way. I think he could have a shot at success in Atlanta, he'd be given a new start back near his family and friends and under some of the best coaching in the game. Farnsworth also heard plenty of boos at Wrigley, and since going back to his hometown has thrived. I recall someone talking about a CPatt + Walker for M Giles, I'd be behind a deal like that.
  17. I was thinking that if we could get the kind of production in CF that Burnitz has provided this year, why not try to resign him to a one year deal and stick him in CF until Pie's ready. I just don't think Corey's gonna cut it, and though his OBP is decent I'm not all that impressed with Hairston either. From what I've seen, Burnitz is a hard-nosed guy that has played a good outfield this year, and he's had some time in CF before. True, he's not as fast as CPat or JHJr, but I've seen him get to a lot of balls this year that I didn't think he would. I think an outfiled of Murton-Burnitz-Giles L to R in 06 would put up some good numbers, with Burny hitting in the 7 hole. If we fall out of contention or Felix is simply tearing it up, Burnitz can be dealt. ok now, fire away.
  18. Yeah, I too remember the reaming he dealt us, it was most unpleasant. So was DLee's hit in the NLCS and then we went and got him.. It's true the Pirates would be after younger players, so they probably wouldn't be interested in both Holla and Rusch. Maybe Holla and either Novoa/Koronka, or Kelton and Rusch? But yeah, I want Macias to take a one way flight via catapult. While Hairston is CF, Mack could take over as resident supersub.
  19. What is the general opinion on Rob Mackowiak? Is he available, and if so what might we have to give up? I know he's not a true difference maker, but I think he could be an interesting option. He's versitle, seeing significant PT at 2B, 3B, and OF. His OBP is .360, He's got a little pop (8 HRs now, 17 last year). He's a Chicago native and grew up rooting for the Cubs, and from what I've witnessed he seems like a real gamer, strikes me as the "scrappy" type. He's only making 1.5M and has not hit too well of late, so maybe it wouldn't take much to get him. I'll throw this out: Hollandsworth + Rusch for Mackowiak + high level prospect Mack could serve as backup if Murton struggles, or we could turn around and deal Walker or (less likely) Hairston for another need. http://www.barstore.com/affiliatestore/media/cubs.jpg
  20. Heck Yes, I'm on! As a side note, I first heard about Matt Murton from his sister Sara, with whom I've had several journalism classes at GSU, a real nice girl she is. She's always been real proud of her brother, and with good reason. Man, that Georgia Tech baseball program sure is gaining some prestige. Their list of MLer's keeps growing.
