Hendry said he tried to gauge interest at the winter meetings in a Prior trade and there was none. I thought the Rangers and Padres had/have interest? Reds did. No way Hendry trades him within the division and risk having him pitch well against us. Or let him hit the free agent market and get nothing in return, while still going to a divisonal team. I think the odds are like 2-1 if he hits the open market he ends up in Cincy.

says the guy excited about the cordero contract. good job, hendry. What? When did I say we didn't overpay for Cordero? Again, welcome to MLB 2007. If you want to sign someone on the open market, you will have to overpay.
Excuse me while I set some things straight. The Reds already said they won't give up Bruce to get Bedard. Right now the deal being talked about is Bailey/Hamilton/Another prospect not named Cueto or Bruce. Is Bedard an ace? Maybe. Look at his numbers, they've imrpoved every year over the last 3 years in the AL. If you can get Bedard without giving up Bruce or Cueto it's a deal you make. Talk about Bedard going into GABP and his numbers going up (didn't seem to do that for Arroyo), but you all forgot to mention the switch in the leagues. If you don't think landing Bedard and Cordero makes them a contender in the piss poor NL Central then you have issues.
Jay Bruce is going to be a great player. I like him more then Lincecum as well. I'd also take him over Maybin, Pie, and Martinez (Mets). Cubs would never get him though. Pie doesn't belong in the same sentence as Bruce.
If the Cubs had signed him for that deal, this board would have melted down with the people who hated the deal. Many people on this board don't like committing a decent percentage of the payroll to the bullpen to the first place. They also don't like multi-year deals for relievers. They also don't like signing guys in their 30's to long-term contracts. Finally, many think the position of closer is overrated to begin with. Cordero fits under all of the above, and while he'll likely be pretty productive he's not productive enough to be that big of a percentage of the Reds overall payroll. What? You are talking about a team that was 29th in baseball in blown saves last year. A blown save can occur pretty much anytime a starter leaves the ballgame. Most are not necessarilly even the fault of the "closer." Ya think? The Reds issue really wasn't closer last year. Weathers was 33/38 in saves. However, this allows the Reds to move Burton to the 7th, Weathers to the 8th, and Cordero to the 9th. It lines up the middle innings nicely. That's the point. If Weathers wasn't the problem, then why pay 4/46 for a closer when you could have gotten just as good a reliever to add to the 7th inning for much, much less? You'd have the same quality personnel at a much cheaper price. And who exactly is this guy you speak of?
