  1. Having two LOOGYs doesn't make a setup guy expendable.
  2. I never said these guys had no value, or they could never help the Cubs. I said next year they shouldn't be given starting roles. All of what you wrote speaks to the idea that these guys have a future. None of it supports the idea that they should start for the Cubs in 2007. Mateo will make starts for the Cubs this season. Bank on it. * Unless he is traded/injured. edit: BTW, Mateo had a perfectly respectable 4.09 ERA in 9 starts before getting mauled in Colorado, which destroyed his season numbers. He is ready. Colorado was just rookie growing pains.
  3. I truly hope that Hendry is not counting on any of the above named pitchers to start the season in the rotation. Last year they all proved that they weren't ready quite yet. next year isn't last year. Next year isn't a good year to put those guys back into prominent roles either. They stunk. And will most likely continue to stink, as none of them showed any sort of progress as the year went on. Marshall wasn't ready for a full season in the bigs. That certainly wasn't the plan during ST. He was AAA bound as soon as Prior/Miller/Wood got back in June. Obviously that didn't work out. We should be happy that Guzman managed to pitch a full season. His stuff isn't the same since the last injury. No more 3 plus pitches. I like Mateo. He just had a couple rough starts towards the end. No big deal. Marmol is going to be one heck of a setup man or closer.
  4. Agreed. But, I think Zito will get that much from someone. Since the Dodgers lost out on an opportunity to throw big money at Ramirez, they might throw it at Zito now. They had LaRoche to put at 3b anyway. With their ability to go super cheap with guys like Ethier, Martin, Kemp, Betemit, LaRoche, Billingsley, Broxton, etc...it would be easy for them to spend big money on Zito, which is their biggest need, IMO. Yeah, I think he'll get it too. That's a lot of money to spend on a pitcher though, especially one that's not a bonafide ace. I'd hate to see what Z could bring on the FA market.
  5. What's the big surprise? It was widely rumored that Zito would get 100MM on the open market all through the season. I'm surprised Boras's initial demand is this low. Beltran started at 10/200M...
  6. O yes yes ye sysey sysyseyes!!!! There is a god!
  7. Still doesn't make sense why Boston spends $148 million and the Cubs $100. They're competing with the Yankees. We're spending as much if not more than our division rivals. Money isn't the issue. It's how it's spent.
  8. Where is Boston getting all this cash? 40MM for posting fee. 20-50MM for Matsuzaka contract. 44MM for Drew? WTH edit: doh! see above post.
  9. I suppose opinions differ on what 'a little more' is. Katz is one of the main guys in Kinzer's agency. Same agency. It was Katz that came in with the last minute sweetners including the opt out clause. I think Katz is above Kinzer. I'm pretty sure Kinzer was the one doing the negotiating like last time and never heard if Katz stepped in again. So the name quoted in that article is probably incorrect.
  10. It was just a meet and greet day. I think they went bowling. Tomorrow they'll start looking at rule changes and whatnot (humidors, instant replay on HRs, etc). After that they might get down to trade talks, or at least laying the groundwork for some later on.
  11. If a team is going to give him one they might as well give it for the length, those last two years will be difficult to trade him with the money he is making. You can always eat some of the contract and get prospects. An NTC makes that a lot more difficult. Of course Sheffield brought in a haul, didn't he? And got an extension...
  12. Soriano isn't going to take a short term contract like Furcal did. Soriano won't be in line for another big FA payday after a 3 year contract. He'll accept nothing less than 5 years. The overall value of the contract is going to be the big issue for Soriano. It's the NTC that worries me. He shouldn't be given one beyond the first 3 years.
  13. worst post in this thread! His glove definitely isn't ready for the bigs. Maybe. He made 16 errors in about 140 games this year. Seven 2B in MLB made that many errors at 2B this year. I think some people have concluded his defense is horrendous based on a poor 3-4 game stretch in the AFL. He hasn't made an error in probably about 10 games now, so that wasn't a permanent, Chuck Knoblauch type of thing. Didn't Chuck end up in LF after those issues? ;) I think he was saying that EPatt doesn't have Knoblauch syndrome. But anyway, there have always been questions about EPatt's defense. Errors are a very subjective way of measuring defense, as it depends on the scorer.
  14. Izturis doesn't have a degenerative knee condition. That's his elbow, and it's fine. His range is outstanding, as is glove, and arm.
  15. Ummm... SS is probably our biggest hole of all. I have much more faith in Pie, Pagan, and Theriot to hit like league average CF, RF, and 2B men... respectively, than I have in Izturis to hit like a league average SS. Izturis isn't on this team to hit. He's there to prevent runs, which he is phenomenal at.
  16. If we get Carlos Lee for LF, I will slit my wrists. LF isn't a hole. CF, 1/2 of RF, 2B, and our pitching staff all need major work on them before we even thing about replacing Murton with a FA.
  17. I bet Soriano's agent is a little ticked at ARam taking the hometown discount. I bet the player's association isn't too thrilled either.
  18. Hmm. Would he throw a hissy fit about playing CF like he did over playing LF? I think his performance with the bat was a direct result of not having to carry his errors to the plate. Stay in the OF, Soriano. I didn't hear him complain about the move after the initial growing pains. Anyone heard whether or not he wants to go back to 2B? The 2B market is fairly flooded this offseason. I think he makes more money remaining in the OF. that last part isn't necessarily true if soriano is vastly outproducing other secondbasemen on the market. if you put alex rodriguez on the market alongside a bunch of joe randas that's not going to make rodriguez any less valuable. Soriano isn't a defensive liability in LF. He is at 2B. Does his bat make up for it? Of course, but it detracts from his value as a player. Compared to the other LF FA, Soriano is a plus defensively and offensively. Compared to other 2B, Soriano is a big plus offensively and a big negative defensively. Soriano still has a lot of value as a 2B, but not even close to as much as a LF or even a CF. No one wanted to trade for Soriano this past offseason to be a 2B. That should tell you something.

  20. I'm not trading our closer for Marcus Giles, sorry. Wuertz for President!
  21. worst post in this thread! His glove definitely isn't ready for the bigs.
  22. That's exactly what I was thinking-his performance this year, his winter performance, and the fact that the Cubs have an infielder in front of him if a second baseman is signed (Theriot) means that I think Cedeno has lost his spot even on the bench for 2007. Unless his glove really comes around before ST, I think you're right. Perry will work wonders with Cedeno, who needs to keep his hands inside and stop swinging at crap out of the zone. He makes pretty good contact in the strike zone.
  23. Power numbers rarely translate from Japan to MLB. If he can't hit for average and draw a ton of walks, we probably don't need him. There are plenty of 2B options on the FA market as it is (not to mention Theriot and Cedeno). I doubt we went after Iwamura, but the bids were submitted before the ARam deal was finalized, so who knows?
  24. Depends on who we give up to get him. His power has gone way down. I love that OBP. I'd check out his footspeed before sticking him in front of Theriot or Lee in our lineup. He certainly wouldn't slow ARam or Barrett down.
