  1. You could take some of that strain off with Howry and Eyre easily enough.
  2. ARod's agent told the Yankees that the NTC wouldn't be waived. ARod is staying in NY.
  3. Hopefully Z gives us that kind of a hometown discount.
  4. Our starting pitching is such a mess that we're going to end up signing someone like Lilly. At least he's not Glendon freaking Rusch.
  5. This is definitely a problem. Hiding Izturis in the 8 hole all year will not be pretty. On those days that Blanco is catching, the bottom of the order will be horrible. Unfortunately, Hendry seemed to be more interested in Lugo as a CF, so I'm not so sure he sees the huge hole we have at SS. Not a shocker, since he never seemed to notice the gaping hole in RF the last few years. Lugo would only have been in CF for one season and then he would have moved to short. I think Hendry is well aware of the SS problem. Izturis is great in the field and poor with the bat. Ronny Cedeno is poor defensively and offensively. Lugo and Furcal would have been good defensively and solid offensively (for that position). Overpaid? Yeah, but it's not like we're going to trade prospects for a sure thing SS. Tampa was asking the moon for Lugo last season. Decent SS are expensive via trade as well. I'd rather fork over the money than the prospects anyway, but that's just me.
  6. Funny... a few weeks ago, I suggested 3/24 and got laughed at for "overpaying." It is definitely overpaying, whether you suggested it or Boston offered it. ...or perhaps there are some on this message board who don't have a firm grasp on the current market situation? That's not overpaying. What did Pierre get again? Lugo's contract is very reasonable in this market. Maybe in this mkt, but I am not sure I'd want him for that price. What other SS do you want? I don't see any decent ones available. It's not like we have a decent SS in our farm system (yeah, I'm looking at you Ronny).
  7. The Cubs' scouts were right on about Jacque Jones.

  9. I like Ryan Church. Deport Jones and stick Church in CF. While we're at it, sign Lugo and deal Izturis. Soriano Lugo Lee Ramirez Murton Barrett Church DeRosa
  10. Because high strikeout and low BA don't matter if you have a good OBP/SLG. Strikeout totals are meaningless. BA doesn't tell you much of everything. Unlike Mark Bellhorn, Dunn actually has a long history of putting up good numbers. He's not a perfect player, far from it. But I don't think anybody is claiming such a thing. He is, however, a perfect matchup with the Cubs biggest needs (LH power bat with OBP ability) offensively. Strikeouts are not meaningless. You do nothing to change the state of the game with a strikeout other than make an out. No runners are moved along. That's not meaningless. It negatively impacts run production. BA is overrated, but a hit is still better than a walk. If player A has a line of .300/.400/.500 and player B has a line of .250/.400/.500, you take player A. Hits are more valuable than walks. Dunn's lack of hits is a problem.
  11. He does K once in a long while, too. :D Yeah, like once a game.
  12. No thanks. His numbers post-ASB were horrible. His defense is pathetic. It's either a walk or a HR from the big man. There isn't much to his game. Let someone else overpay.
  13. He walks a ton of guys. That amazes me as he throws a ton of first-pitch fastballs. You'd think he'd be able to get ahead in the count and that would trim his walks down. It's so unlike Hendry to go after a pitcher that walks a lot of guys. Yeah, that really confuses me too. Hendry and Piniella both griped about the pitchers giving up too many walks this last season. At least Lilly will strike out his share of guys and get him out of jams he creates. I guess that's something.
  14. So why didn't 8 for Soriano get same reaction? If we do it for Soriano please do it for Schmidt. Soriano takes great care of his body and guys with his skillset age well. If Schmidt manages to stay healthy in the next 3-4 years it will be a miracle. I don't think he'll age well at all. It's not as hard on your body to play in the OF 140+ games as it is to pitch 180+ innings a year.

  16. We're trading him for whoever is necessary to get the free agent pitcher's agents to think the Cubs have some leverage in negotiations. That's actually not a terrible idea, but then if we deal him for a pitcher, who is going to play in the OF w/ Murt and Soriano? Lofton? Manny Ramirez? \:D/ Supposedly they want at least Loney and LaRoche from LA. We can't touch that and shouldn't even try. Agree with your former point, completely disagree with the later. I forgot to add Penny to the list. Penny, LaRoche, and Loney. How are we going to top that?

  18. Reason 3: To rehab your injury prone ML players.
  19. I don't know, but if the Cubs trade JJ they will need to get a slugger or a high OBP guy for SS or CF. How about Lugo in CF this season and move him to SS after we buy out Izturis next season? It's not ideal offensive production out of CF this season, but it doesn't block Pie or tie us down to another long term contract in the OF. Lugo isn't a high OBP guy and definitely doesn't have a ton of power, but the OF power problem might not be fixable this season. Another year of Murton developing (especially his power) and not filling in CF with a longterm contract could seem like the best move we never made.
  20. Schmidt is asking for too many years and we already have a Zito-like lefty in Rich Hill. There are better ways to spend money. Guys like Lilly, Meche, Padilla are much better options at this point. They'll be movable later in their contracts. The market will always overvalue pitching and the contracts they get this year will seem very reasonable 2 years from now. I don't like Lilly's GB/FB ratio, but he's not a bad option for the price. I want to see Lilly try and show up Piniella on the mound. WWF in the clubhouse.
  21. How is Gooz going to break out? His stuff has regressed considerably. He no longer has 3 plus pitches. His command could come around, but I just don't see him as the #1 or #2 ceiling guy anymore. That sucks, b/c he could really bring it pre-injuries.
  22. Link The whole article discusses position shifts in the OF. Interesting, that's the thing I was wondering about. That's using data for the whole year. Soriano improved by leaps and bounds in LF this year. I'd put that projection on the low side of what he's capable of defensively, in LF or CF.
