  1. Link. Hendry is an incompetent, idiotic, unqualified colossal failure of a general manager who has done less with more than any GM in Cub history. To say you have no plans to meet with the agent of the most important player you may or may not sign this winter is ignorant and foolish. We will never win a world series with Jim Hendry as GM. There are two sides to this problem. Hendry has every incentive in the world to get this done. Kinzer and ARam do not. It all depends on how much character the player and agent have. I'm not too optimistic anymore, but Hendry shouldn't take the bulk of the blame on this one. If anything, Hendry tends to think everyone is as good as their word. He certainly is a quality person. edit: spelling
  2. Nice. I like this deal more and more. 1.5MM base w/ incentives. Beautiful. Rothschild and Co. think his velo will reappear after some rest. I thought that was likely anyway considering his injury. He also came along slowly b/c we were out of it and there was no reason to push (like Woody did). At worst Miller is a bottom of the rotation guy. At best he is front of the rotation material. This is MUCH better than a Rusch-type signing. This guy has potential.
  3. Miller has pitched successfully at the ML level for more than 200 innings. Miller is still healing up. Comparing his 2006 numbers to a bunch of minor leaguers is silly.
  4. I believe he's been to the All Star game the exact same number of times as Derrek Lee, and is entering prime age, where he could get MVP consideration if he has a flukey career year like Lee did. Ramirez is one of the best 20 hitters in baseball. He should be retained, and there really shouldn't be much thought about it. He doesn't hustle. Let that bum walk. P.S. Bring Pierre back! P.P.S. Neifi too!
  5. When did they sound good? Because I totally slept through that. I feel like they've just gone from "making me nervous" to "making me panic." Hendry was optimistic he would bring Ramirez back. He told Piniella the chances were good. Then came the radio reports suggesting a contract would be signed well before the 11th (obviously didn't come true). Miles said he expected it to come down to the deadline, but didn't seem to worried that Ramirez would get away, just that he thought the Cubs would get milked by Kinzer/Katz. Now we get quotes from the agent that suggest the talks haven't even gotten serious b/c Hendry is busy. That doesn't sound like agent-speak trying to scare up the extra 1M or extra year out of a team.
  6. Wow, the rumors don't sound so good all of a sudden.
  7. I wasn't too high on Drew b/c of his injury concerns, but if he didn't take talent to acquire, I'd risk it.
  8. Even Muskat slammed Pierre the other day, citing his .330 OBP. Miles has said the light is slowly going on over there, but if Muskat is using OBP, rest assured that it came from Hendry or someone higher up that spoonfed her baseball knowledge.

  10. But it might increase strikeouts, which is the worst possible thing in the world. It would totally offset any increase in OPS, or runs scored for that matter. How would it increase strikeouts? You're much less likely to K on pitches in the zone than you are out of the zone, well, unless you're a freak like Vlad Guerrero.
  11. Look at Hanley Ramirez's last year in the minors. He was floundering in AA at 23. Producing numbers-wise in the minors isn't the best way to evaluate prospects.
  12. EPatt's bat sure is looking good these days. Anyone watching the games? How's his defense been after the errorfest?
  13. Well, the success of Ichiro, and others, is why the price tag for other Japanese stars has gone up. Before, there was significant doubt that such a player could transition to MLB. Now, those doubts have decreased immensely. Ichiro's power sure didn't translate. Kaz Matsui's didn't. Defense and ability to hit for average seems to translate just fine. Pitching? We haven't seen a consistent world burner come out of Japan yet. The doubts around Japanese pitching haven't lessened much. A few WBC performances don't mean much. I guess we'll see just how much the market has changed with Matsuzaka's posting fee and contract. The market will change again depending on his success. If he flops or becomes a recurring injury nightmare, he really hurts the Japanese pitchers' chances of coming over here and making money.
  14. That's correct, and it's Matsuzaka that chose Boras. I think Boras's modus operandi is well known, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that he will play hardball in negotiating the contract. Hendry and Boras have a history though, including Hendry calling Boras on his bluffs(Brownlie). If the Cubs offer him something worthwhile(better than Ichiro got, but not this 8 figure per year craziness), I have a hard time seeing Daisuke ultimately turning that down. What was the story with Brownlie? A monster contract to a pitcher with abuse issues and the whole transition to MLB problem isn't warranted. I can't believe that the market has changed so much since Ichiro came over. edit: grammar
  15. Did anyone listen to WGN radio sports reports yesterday afternoon or Sports Central? My dad was in the car and he thinks he heard David Kaplan say that Aramis will be signed by Saturday after he gets a few more bucks. Can anyone confirm? Yeah, I heard that too. Very encouraging, IMO, since Kaplan has been money on his scoops lately - MacPhail being the opt out clause creator and Aramis getting a full NTC for the first two years of his contract. When was it confirmed that Ramirez had a full NTC? http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-061030cubs,1,187565.story?coll=cs-home-headlines That is not confirmation of a full no trade clause. A no-trade provision can mean many things, most common is a list of 4-5 teams where the player would refuse to be traded. Whatever. Kaplan's source was a scout who'd seen the actual contract. I don't need more confirmation than that. I'm not a reporter.

  17. It's too bad they are comming to the realization at such a late date and with a depleted talent pool. Imagine if Hendry would have had the epiphany when the Cubs had a lot of power. Yeah, it sucks, but better late than never. It's not just Hendry getting it, it's the "baseball guys."

  19. Finally, indications that Hendry and the Cubs are getting OBP. Muskat pretty much goes with whatever baseball knowledge is handed to her by those guys. To hear her bag on Pierre's OBP skills, or lack thereof is very heartening, IMO.
  20. 6 flipping errors? I don't think Micky G and EPat will get together and put on a defensive skills clinic.
