  1. Isn't that about when he got hurt? exactly. I still wonder how the cubs continued to let him play when he was obviously in bad shape last year. But what ever so long as he keeps this up now
  2. thanks for illuminating my motives for starting this thread. I bet you can tell me exactly what I'm thinking right now as well.... I wasn't saying he was lazy so much as I was saying that I think he got the easy go around, some call it star treatment, in spring training and now he's not performing. He even mentioned at some point during the spring that he didn't need the at bats that he would be able to hit when the season starts. I remember theriot even backing him up in a tribune article saying that guys like Ramirez always hit. Well its here now and all I'm saying is, hey where you at? It seems clear that he is completely off at the plate. he's not a strikeout guy and he's striking out at an alarming rate. In 2008 with the cubs he struck out 16% of the time the most since being with the cubs. This year he's started off with +34% of his at bats ending in K's. Granted small sample size and the bullpen's woes are worse but he needs to start hitting because these games are just as important the ones in September.
  3. heres hoping that the new ownership would step to keep the best prospects from being traded ie Cashner, Castro, J.Jackson, B. jackson, Vitters etc. But I agree the big club may be better off as sellers especially with expiring contracts from Lee and if he opts for it Ramirez, and a year more of Fukudome. I would imagine those would be the first guys moved. But still too early to tell what this team is about
  4. Am I the only one who keeps remembering the spring training reports of Ramirez sitting out for weeks at a time because of some phantom injury; while also claiming that he'll have no problem hitting? Well we're two and half weeks into the season and big surprise he's still playing like its spring training.
  5. Seems like the cubs are never interested in these guys. The hype suggests that he is a major league position player. I would love to see the Cubs sign a guy like this. You can never have too many shortstops; because in theory they can play any where if need be. Adeiny Hechevarria-SS- Player According to George A. King III of the New York Post, the Yankees will be serious bidders on Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria. "The Yankees have been on him for a while," a scout told the Post. "Two weeks ago, about 50 scouts watched him work out and the Yankees were there. They also have seen him in smaller workouts." The 21-year-old Hechavarria is currently blocked from signing with a major league team by the Office of Foreign Assets Committee as they verify his age, identity and residency. In some circles, he is regarded as a better prospect than Jose Iglesias, who inked a four-year, $8.25 million contract with the Red Sox last September.
  6. Thank god you're not our gm. Every other team in the league passes on a guy but people on this board still think hes great. :banghead: At anyrate, Dye would be great at the right price, there is a very good chance that Lee and or Soriano miss some time this year and the platoon with Fukudome would probably very productive. I would like this move
  7. maybe its just me but when i read that we were interested in Contreras, I immediately thought Ardolis Chapman. Is it possible they sign Contreras to lure Chapman? A Chapman signing would be the classic hendry move; he seems to love those flame throwers who lack consistency.
  8. too bad their pitching still sucks. i have doubts that reyes, and beltran can ever be healthy again for an entire season.
  9. what moves do we need to make to be more than a division contender? Here is what I would do: In CF: forget about Marlon Byrd and trade for Brett Gardener; gives us speed and lock down defense in two outfield positions. Infield: Id use the money saved on not signing byrd to sign Tejada to play second base and when Aramis and or D Lee gets hurt he fills in at third and first. Its pretty much a given that he wont play short next year with who ever he signs with so he this should be no problem. I'm guessing that the 46 doubles he had last year knocks in a lot more runs with our team then with that junk the astros ran out there last year. Plus he has to be better playing second than at short right? Bullpen: Just sign Matt Capps already. Bench: ??????
  10. This Bradley thing is management's fault, and not just for signing him. Of course we could make the argument that he should not act like a POS. But hey he had proved it time and time again. So why expect anything else? If the yankees had signed bradley instead of us they would have put him in anger management, had him seeing a psychiatrist, given him meds; as they did for Arod, and some other notable players. Our organization, as inept as they are, never seemed to try to prevent this type of thing. Sure they protected themselves contractually but Hendry knows how ravenous the fans are now he should have known that Bradley wouldn't mix well with them, he should have known that the media would just gravitate toward him after every game; good or bad to magnify everything. they should have trained Bradley to deal with criticism with the media, given him a media liason, taught him how to deal with bad games civilly. It was a train wreck we all saw coming but hoped upon hope that it wouldn't happen. Management was hoping too, not being proactive. Above all, a couple of no-comments to the media and this is probably a completely different story.
  11. I for one am glad. I'm sick of seeing the cubs sign this type of guy. Good power, tons of strikeouts, fading skills. No thanks. At this point we are better with bradley then without him.
  12. The last thing we need is another old player who strikes out 160 times a year and who has cant hit above .273-- don't we have enough guys like this? For all the hype about his consistency; his defense is great, his obp isn't bad. 25 hr's and 75 rbi's, is pretty good from centerfield. But we have enough power and strikeouts on this team we need guys who can hit for average and take walks to balance this. All cameron ensures is that we have more games that we win 10-2 only to get shut out the next three days in a row.
  13. Do you think Castros really ready? The last thing we want is to rush the guy. It will be interesting to see if Jaramillo can work miracles with Castro. All of the stories have said that Hendry is kind of prepping Theriot for a move to 2B, but I really think Castro needs a little more time in the minors. It wouldn't surprise me if he's called up part way into the season. You're right about not wanting to rush him. There would be a lot of pressure on a 20 year old playing SS on a contending team. It's been Hendry's M.O. to rush top prospects (see: Patterson, Pie, etc.) so it wouldn't surprise me if he broke camp with the big team hendry wasn't Gm when patterson came up, MacPhail was.
  14. Its not a rumor; it is a fact that Fox had coachability problems in the minors. There was even article about it on the cubs website toward the end of the year; talking about how he had overcome these problems.
  15. Even though Theriot may have been average for a second baseman last year; his bat does seem light at that positions. Sure our defense would be good but we need so much offensive help on this team that moving him would probably help. Baker probably puts up better numbers next year in my estimations. If Castro plays he will be hitting 8th for sure. I can't stand the idea of seeing theriot, castro, and the pitcher hitting in the same inning.
  16. Hendry is still operating like its 2005. Two year isn't that bad though. Still its not like the guy is some elite reliever.
  17. most people agree that chapman will be spending at least a year in the minors; to refine his stuff. So he is definitely raw. IMO; i think he is going to make someone a heck of a closer one day but not much of a starter.
  18. I didnt watch the whole game but from the couple of plays I did see he looked pretty solid in center. I will say though it looks like the kid could stand to gain some weight.
  19. Signing O-dog would be the typical cubs thing to do. We could have/should have signed him this year. Now he is close to career numbers and next year he will get a multiyear deal from any team. I'm going to go out on a limb and say next year he will regress and or be often injured. lets trade for a younger guy & get someone cheap and in their prime for once.
  20. Brenly is just holding the big name players accountable for whats gone on this season. Its common sense, ideally, your big contracts should produce. I don't think Brenly has said anything that isnt completely true.
  21. It baffles me why Smoltz insists on being a starter at this point in his career. Im pretty sure based o what he has done he is a HOFer already. So its not like hes trying to get win #250 or 300 for that matter. Based on Gregg's outing today we'd be crazy not to be interested. But Id actually rather we claim a real closer off waivers if they are available.
  22. I think scouting and player development are the biggest problems with this organization. The talent scouts cannot accurately gage who has major league potential and the player development people aren't helping those with talent move along the ranks. Case in point Tyler Colvin. He has some talent but to project has as starting outfielder was a stretch for every team. He really could have been a second or even third round pick. Nonetheless, our system has done nothing to mould him into a player and his k/bb ratio and overall approach at the plate festers. These are the same scouts that told Lou that Soto and Theriot were not a major leaguers. We cant scout free agents either and playing in a perpetual win-now mode doesn't help; although some how the Bo Sox, Yanks, and Angels seem to pull it off.
  23. Wow I cant believe they wouldn't make that deal Martinez would look alot better at first than Adam Laroche.
  24. Dave Kaplan 720 am is reporting sale finalized.
  25. Heres my take I think Halladay is the best pitcher in baseball. That said, he has pitched a crap load of innings in his career. Hes on pace for his fourth straight season of 200 innings and in the last eight years he has led the AL three times in innings pitched. In short, the Blue jays have road him for the horse that he is and recognize that he wont be nearly as durable for the second half of his career. I dont think the cubs have the prospects to do this trade but it will certainly take a kings ransom to acquire this guy. The Giants may be the best positioned to do this. There is also a lot of risk that the amount of innings he has pitched will catch up with him.
