  1. per rotoworld earlier today, the dodgers asked for jordan zimmerman, and ian desmond for Loney. If they want that much for him he wont be coming here.
  2. didn't A-Gone have shoulder surgery at the end of this year? Maybe thats why they would like to sell high? Or maybe just the prospects being offered are more to their liking. Either way any team should be concerned about this: Per Rotoworld: Adrian Gonzalez-1B - Padres Nov. 9 - 9:54 pm et Adrian Gonzalez (shoulder) told XX Sports Radio in San Diego on Tuesday that he will not swing a bat for 4-5 months. As Dan Hayes of the North County Times points out, Gonzalez underwent right shoulder surgery on October 20, so this may put him on pace to be ready around March 20. The 2011 season gets underway on March 31, so he could be cutting things close. We'll know a lot more in the weeks and months ahead, so be sure to stay tuned for updates on his recovery.
  3. Any of them worth taking a flyer on? Seems like there are a lot of bigger names than usual. Rockies: Manny Delcarmen Mets: Sean Green Chris Carter, John Maine Nationals: Joel Peralta, Wil Nieves, Chien-Ming Wang Dodgers: Russell Martin, George Sherrill, Trent Oeltjen Giants: Chris Ray, Eugenio Velez Pirates: Lastings Milledge, Argenis Diaz, Donnie Veal, Brian Burres Diamondbacks: Blaine Boyer, Ryan Church, Augie Ojeda, D.J. Carrasco Marlins: Jose Veras, Ronny Paulino Padres: Tony Gwynn, Scott Hairston, Matt Antonelli, Luis Perdomo Brewers: Todd Coffey, Joe Inglett Astros: Sammy Gervacio Braves: Matt Diaz Blue Jays: Fred Lewis, Jeremy Accardo Red Sox: Hideki Okajima, Andrew Miller, Taylor Buchholz Mariners: Ryan Rowland-Smith Rays: Lance Cormier, Willy Aybar, Dioner Navarro, J.P. Howell Royals: Josh Fields Rangers: Dustin Nippert Angels: Kevin Frandsen Athletics: Jack Cust, Travis Buck, Edwin Encarnacion Yankees: Alfredo Aceves, Dustin Moseley Orioles: Matt Albers White Sox: Bobby Jenks, Erick Threets Tigers: Zach Miner
  4. further proof that hendry is an absolute moron and Ricketts a bigger moron for keeping him. Lets hope bruce miles is wrong on this one maybe they only wanted to offer Baker and Hill minor league contracts as triple A fillers?
  5. agreed this market so far is crazy inflated.
  6. I agree give a young guy a shot for this year. Maybe he turns out really good. Or maybe he just gets us through this year so we can try for Agonz or Fielder. If we arent signing Dunn then this is the way it should probably go down.
  7. And the annual search for a middle infielder begins. A couple years back he would have been a great short term signing. i'm not exactly sold on Dewitt as an everyday starter but id rather have him than an aging oft injured middle infielder. Chalk this up to jimbo wanting a leadoff guy
  8. You think he can reach a .380 OBP and .070 IsoD? His best two OBPs have been .394 and .355 and the .394 was with a .041 IsoD and a .380 BABIP (60 points higher than his career average). I'd think a .360-.370 OBP with a .060 IsoD would be the max he could realistically reach, considering he'll be 28 next year. And that's if he had an average or better BABIP. UZR likes his defense, so he's a valuable enough player, but with the glut of OFs we have it's difficult to give up much of anything for him. It will be interesting to see thats for sure. I really think his game suits the NL much better. And I think if hes on the right team he could really blossom. Lets just hope the cardinals dont get him because he'll turn into a stud.
  9. I have a feeling elsbury could be a breakout candidate if he were to move to the NL. He had a decent second year in 09 and should get quite a bump in stats in the NL. He will never ops over .900 but a 310/380/430 line isnt impossible. Add in 70 steals and 50+ extrabase hits and he could be a useful player. right now too many strikeouts, not enough walks, Defense needs to be shored up at center. Eitherway he just doesnt fit this team other than that we need speed and probably could use a lead off guy. We have much more pressing needs however.
  10. Yeah, I dont see any problem provided he isnt grossly overpaid. hes a good defender, has good power, and maybe jarmillo can help him a bit. But make no mistake the guys bounced around the minors for a lot of years every one has loved his potential but who knows whether we get Pena 2009 or Pena 2010. Either way the power numbers are probably better than what we got this year from Lee and Nady combined.
  11. exactly! this is the main scare tactic of any business seeking immediate impact legislature. Make it look bad and they will back up the truck.
  12. http://blog.cleveland.com/tribe_impact/2009/06/medium_shin-soo-choo-2009.jpg So one player thats all you have? you wrote that nobody developed a star player who wasn't already a professional there. the guy above proves that to be untrue. Ok correction one player out of the many has become good player. I'm not saying we shouldn't be scouting there, I just dont think we should be investing the majority of our money for international players there.
  13. Ricketts is a businessman and this is how big businesses interact with government so you cant blaming him for trying. Heck he strong armed the city of Mesa to figure something out for the spring training complex or he would move it to naples. And it worked. Its pretty clear that in its current form it wont work here for reasons outlined above. Plus I think that the two hundred million dollar investment in the area amounts to the planned triangle building structure. So really this deal would be incredibly one sided. Is the structure of wrigley field really that unstable? I just dont see whats wrong with a rehab plan that occurs over then next ten years without closing the stadium. Really, whether it needs to be closed or not he needs to just man up and pay for it. As cubs fans we pay enough and two raises in ticket prices in the same amount of years to watch what amounts to hot garbage is not endearing him to fans. Nor is the fact that payroll has been reduced in the same time period, our first round pick this year was a DII player or signability pick, we arent competing for decent free agents, and now as tax payers we are being asked to divert money from the future revenue pool? I get the feeling that our owner is a big time penny pincher.
  14. No. The guy was an amazingly gifted hitter with a flawless approach at the plate, but my guess is he would not be able to teach what made him so great to others. On the other hand, if you've got a solid hitting coach situation in the minors and don't really need a guy in the majors to reteach guys how to hit, it couldn't hurt to have a guy with that flawless approach influencing players to be a little more patient. I think what made bonds great before and while on roids is that he was selfless at the plate, he made up for it with his antics in the dugout though. The thing I always noticed is that he choked up on the bat to get better control, something I rarely see with guys like aramis swinging out of their shoes. But Bonds would probably be a terrible hitting coach just as Ted Williams was as coach. THe guys did it too naturally and that initself cannot be taught nor can the instincts that come with it.
  15. http://blog.cleveland.com/tribe_impact/2009/06/medium_shin-soo-choo-2009.jpg So one player thats all you have?
  16. thats completely wrong. They said that the city would continue to receive the 16.1 million, the current level, every year this plan goes for. The annual increases from more ticket sales and increases in ticket prices was to be used to pay back the state for those bonds. This is why numerous media outlets called it a "loan" but it is hardly a loan when you take city funds to pay back the state for what you borrowed.
  17. I agree. We know that great players come from the dominican republic all the time. We think asia may have that same potential but no one has developed a star player who wasnt already a professional there. The point is quit messing around and pay for players we know that can be good not that we hope are good. Why we arent continually signing top latin american prospects is beyond me.
  18. For once I agree with you. This city is F-ed financially. its a joke and its deals like this make sure it continues to happen. just because the metropolitan sporting authority gets paid for every empty seat at the cell doesn't mean its right nor does it mean the cubs should get a similar sweet deal. For all intents and purposes this deal amounts to tax freeze on the present levels of the amusement tax until 2035. The money that would have come from increases then goes to pay for the bonds issued by the state for immediate repair of wrigley. This is money the city desperately needs in areas other than rich baseball team owner and overtime it amounts to staggering losses when considering inflation and the relative rate of ticket increases. I don't think the city should be rewarding the cubs with this incredible break. Save this for the company that wants to come and provide 8,000 new jobs. The worst part is I really feel that our activity in the free agent market for years to come hinges upon this bill.
  19. so they are increasing the high demand tickets to pay for the losses generated by less attractive games (pirates, astros, etc.) that became a huge liability due to last years increase, the recession, and the team sucking. huh. Seems like lowering the prices back to a couple of years ago's level and keeping the place consistently packed achieves the same result along with alienating alot less people. only the cubs
  20. is he a type a or b? if so it would be incredibly Hendry like to resign him an give prospects back to the dodgers.
  21. They're Yankee fans. I have this same debate with them. Nice people but they say that because at some point this season the bullpen probably blew a game. He tends to know who's got the hot hand when there's injuries, which there are. When the bullpen is healthy everyone's got a pretty well defined role. Ask Josh Johnson what he thinks about Joe. Also, he has Mariano at the end, the rest of their pen has been a mess for most of the year. I'm not real sure how many games you've watched but they probably weren't the same games I watched. Really the marlins bullpen was bad to begin with 250 plus walks good for second worst in the majors. And while you can argue that some of them were because of Girardi's mismanagement the vast majority were most likely due to having inexperienced pitchers in the pen as a result of having a 15 million dollar payroll.
  22. agreed, Kila Ka'aihue would be a shrewd move by Hendry if indeed the team goes cheap or invests heavily in a starter. what ever moves are made on offense we are still going to be left hoping that aramis has a bounce back year, colvin and castro continue improve and soriano doesn't get any worse.
  23. Only speculation, but it sounds like Girardi is the favorite, followed by Gonzalez, with Sandberg coming in third. Girardi would be much worse than Sandberg for the simple fact that he will have 2 WS rings as a manager (likely) before he takes on the Cubs. He's flat out terrible in the same way Sandberg is, the only difference is he has had the best talent in baseball to overcome him. People (outside of us internet nerds) won't critique his work b/c, "he has two rings". Yuck, yuck, and more yuck. I never watch the yankees so I know little about Girardi as an in game manager now. but for all of this talk about world series rings I was much more impressed with him while with the marlins though. He seemed to make the right moves for the right situations, a no brainer yet something that Lou was really lost on. Plus he did quite a good job with a bunch of young kids many of which blossomed under his tutelage and after some tough love. It seems like these are some of the main things we want out of a manager.
  24. No love for BB?
  25. I don't see the Friars trading A-Gonz after this year. It just doesnt make sense they made a huge step forward this year, have great, cheap, young pitching and will probably go to the playoffs this year. Plus they have a new owner who doesn't have the money woes (iirc). To trade him now signals to their fan base that they don't care about winning. Point two, other teams like the braves have a need at first base and much better prospects that us. I still think Dunn is the most likely to be manning first base. Beyond that, unfortunately I don't see Hendry adding any more offensive players.
