  1. I could be wrong, but I'm not expecting him to be one of the better hitters in the lineup. He stands a pretty decent chance of being our 6th or 7th best hitter. Seriously?? He's a very young, relatively inexperienced player entering his second season. There's a very good chance that he has a shaky year. That said, I see him ideally projecting to be a #2-ish hitter latter on, and I'd rather the Cubs take advantage of having an "in between" team to let him get more PA by batting near the top of the order instead of burying him. agreed he is raw but he profiles as an ideal #2 hitter, there is no question about that. I actually think that he will really surprise us this year offensively.
  2. Put on waivers according to Sullivan. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0329-cubs-bits--20110328,0,5658997.story Okay, that's a huge difference... not if another team claims him of course, but at least we're trying to keep him in the system rather than cutting ties completely. yeah basically just a formality so we can send him to AAA. Not sure if anyone is willing to give him a spot this late in the spring
  3. He will be mediocre at best this season and I will enjoy that after watching that stretch where he didnt take a walk for two months. But yes his comments smack of sour grapes for a guy who cant face reality. Know your role.
  4. The gist of the article is the black hole the Cubs have had in CF for decades. Might be a nice problem to have 2 great young CFs. Of course, we haven't really had a black hole in CF. Maybe we haven't had superstar production, but we've only really had 3 bad years in the last decade. 2010 - Marlon Byrd was great. 2009 - Kosuke Fukudome was good offensively, not so much on defense. 2008 - Jim Edmonds was great, Reed Johnson was good. 2007 - Jacque Jones was solid on both sides of the ball. 2006 - Juan Pierre hit just enough and played good defense. 2005 - Corey Patterson was awful. 2004 - Corey Patterson was good. 2003 - Corey Patterson was great, Kenny Lofton was great. 2002 - Corey Patterson sucked. 2001 - Gary Matthews Jr. sucked, Michael Tucker was good. You seem to forget that Jacque Jones couldnt hit a cut off man that entire year and was personally responsible for an earthworm genocide as a result of the thousand hoppers from the outfield in. He also fell off the earth power wise. not exactly a good year for centerfield.
  5. as of a couple days ago Koyie Hill was batting a robust .042, Wellington Castillo .733. Yes its spring training but thats ridiculous. We know hill is a good defender but he's not comparable to benito santiago or Irod in their prime, so his defense probably isnt that big of a difference maker. Also I think its a stretch for Geo to catch 140 games, 120 sounds more reasonable given his injury history the last two years. So why not Castillo?
  6. hahaha. I'm glad Im not the only one who was thinking it. "go get em big boy"
  7. this really is awesome and what I have been hoping to see for a long time. thumbs up
  8. the probability of this should also increase with the switch to the N.L.
  9. I never knew he played second. I stand corrected. And actually his fielding has been better there than at third in a small sample size. Like I said though, if he can play secondbase he should be. Because I have to believe he can do just as well if not better than the three guys we have there.
  10. Ok so I won that drawing to purchase cubs red sox tickets in Boston. But I need some advice. And coincidentally, I am actually going to be one the east coast that weekend. But if these tickets are going to be in high demand and the price is right, I will probably sell them. But given the cubs play last year how hot are these tickets really going to be? Plus the experience of seeing the cubs may have similar intrinsic worth. So I guess what I'm asking is when I purchase tickets saturday should I sell them or keep them? what would you do?
  11. Thomas turns 25 this year and isn't much of a defender. His value is easily replaced by any one of Marquez Smith, Lemahieu, Flaherty, etc. Coello, IMO, moves near the top of the heap of middle relief options with his ability to get K's. I value that more than I do the middling skill sets that guys like Caridad, Gray, Samardzija, Coleman, Diamond, or Mateo have. Marqez Smith doesnt play second base, if he did end of discussion. I agree with northside blues of the three guys we have that can play second Baker, Dewitt, and Barney none are impressive. Thomas was a high ceiling pick originally but just hasnt put it together at the higher levels like he should have. still he has been solid, and I would have more confidence in him seeing extended time at second base and hitting mlb pitching then Baker or Barney. Either way he doesnt see the light of day with the BoSox unless Pedroia is still hurt.

  13. they asked him about playing football and he conceeded with all the ups and downs he thought about it. but seriously even three plus years away from the game he would probably be a starter with the bears.
  14. I heard an interview with him last week on Waddle and Silvy. He certainly is confident in his ability to be a "great" pitcher and suggested all of the moving from bullpen to rotation hurt his ability to be consistent. Also suggested that his secondary pitches have really come along and thinks he has a great shot at the fifth starter spot. Unless he came a real long way in the off season I have to believe he is on the outside looking in. He has shown virtually nothing since his first stint as a september call up.
  15. I'm too lazy to look right now but from what I read in the last couple weeks about Young, his defense has really fallen off. So the big question then is can he even play second anymore? If he can be average defensively and post career avgs on offense I would be pretty happy provided the deal is suitable moneywise and traded players.
  16. I dont think that I would be too excited if I saw those numbers from either guy in double a. that said point well taken, they were playing with the countries best, many of whom would be legitimate mlb guys if not stars if they defected. So for a teenager in the best league Silva showed promise. And it sounds and looks like the other guy is an advanced receiver who's bat needs to catch up with his defense. In short they were playing above their heads.
  17. I'm a bit less excited after seeing these stats: http://www.baseball-reference.com/bullpen/2008-2009_Cuban_National_League http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=Ruby+Silva+Noguez&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 (scroll down to the xls file for download, sheet 1: Bateo) risky but i didnt find any problems with it. Ruby Silva-Noguez' stats, led league in triples. Not listed here but first link says he had 16 outfield assists. ALso the stolen bases are surprising for a guy with 10 triples. Played all three outfield spots. Ab Hits AVG 2B 3B HR Rbi TB SLU BB K Sb CS Fielding % 298 78 .276 11 10 4 32 121 .428 12 44 1 1 .959 Yaniel Cabeza - Just like the scouting report says, a good receiver not much else to look at. Ab Hits AVG 2B 3B HR RBI TB SLU BB K Sb CS Bases stoled Def Caught Stealing Fielding % 80 16 .195 0 0 0 6 16 .195 4 14 0 0 24 15 .991
  18. I kinda wish those scouting reports were a bit more optimistic. They shelled out alot of money for the scouting reports above. That said, Im excited to see the cubs get more involved with bigger name caribbean/latin american players. Ive been dogging them on here about this for a while so its good to see. Again it would be nice if they were more highly regarded but I'll take this crumb they are throwing my way and hopefully their potential plays well.
  19. The funny thing is he probably has the leg up on three out of the four guys you just named without throwing a pitch.
  20. I do think finding a serviceable back up to spell castro from time to time is important. Its not about stealing at bats but just making sure hes fresh, in case he slumps, has a minor injury. etc. This would be a good guy to have around. it would also be nice to have someone not named jeff baker that can play third when Aramis goes on the dl. Plus Im just not that sold with our second base situation. If DeWitt stumbles, Baker cant face righties, Barney hasn't shown me anything yet and then were kind of screwed. By the way for all the DeWitt lovers he actually was worse with the cubs then with the dodgers last year. With the way were built, if we could add a more consistent on base guy it would help a great deal especially if its at or around the minimum salary.
  21. If I remember correctly Montanez was a fringe first round talent /money pick. I'm surprised he's done as well as hes had. May be a decent bench guy though.
  22. this was the vibe I got from Szczur too. I look forward to seeing if all the hype is justified. in limited at bats in the minors he didnt do anything to hurt himself.
  23. Dude went vegan. Sometimes it takes a while for the weight to come off. Eitherway hes easily the fastest fat guy in the game since tony gwynn or kirby puckett.
  24. Its probably just playing in the AL East that raises a pitchers flyball,HR rates, and conversely lowers the groundball rate not the ball park. Just a guess without looking at any stats.
  25. thats what everyone thought last year. They still have some good young pitchers who will keep them in games.
