  1. an expiring contract? this isn't the nba. Wouldn't that potentially have some appeal to a team in serious financial trouble? Thank you. The mets are so bad off right now that they need to start shipping guys out quickly. I'm pretty sure they are 600 million in the hole and no one is going to their games. But yeah the mets would take some back lash for trading wright so they would at least need to feign competitiveness by picking up a deteriorating veteran who they arent on the hook for past this year. all the while picking up pitchers which is the biggest reason why they have sucked for the last 8 years.
  2. I'll take David Wright for Aramis and prospects. GIve them an expiring contract to save money and some decent arms for the future.
  3. Castro will be fine on defense eventually. Is anyone concerned that he is been slumping a bit of late since Quade started moving him around? .244 in his last ten games. granted an extremely small sample size. But since moving into the 3 hole more often he seems to have been alot less patient.
  4. One thing to note was Simpson and Jokisch were dealing with 30 mph winds blowing out. From the Chiefs' Twitter: Wind doesn't equal hits.
  5. Soriano may not hit for average this year. But he has his batting stance back to the way it was when he was mashing the ball with the nationals its good to see. If he hits .230 with 35 homers, I'll take it. Yeah, I'll take the crappy average and uninspiring OBP so long as he's a serious power threat you can have lurking towards the end of the lineup. Agreed. it seems like he has that exagerated lean over the plate that he hasnt had since he was plunked in the dome(head) in atlanta. But just looking at how he is swinging the bat now it really creates a great deal of leverage especially on those pitches low in the zone.
  6. First thing I thought of was Ronnie. I think I was channeling him.

  8. funny article title on the cubs front page: "Quade Looks For Dempster to Shake His Struggles"
  9. I have to believe that dempster is hurt. Its not often a pitcher goes from being as good as he was to as bad as he currently is. So much for Hendry not wanting to waste a 40 man spot by not calling up another pitcher. DL this man.
  10. Not really, he was a product of Rothschild. Since Larry is no longer here he's now going back to what he was without Larry, Its not like he just forgot everything Larry taught him. I tend to think that coaches at this level are predominately responsible for making sure player's stick to their mechanics, are well prepared physically for their games, and mentally for the competition -- all things that would require his presence every day. I also believe that coaches are a relatively small factor in players' successes and failures at this level, but anyway... If good mechanics = more success than your reasoning is flawed and a coach can have quite an impact.
  11. His obp so far suggests he will hit the ball. On the flipside, never did I think he would be this bad through month one. It seemed like he had so many things working for him; 1) recovered from last years plantar fasceitous 2) facing national league pitching 3) playing at wrigley vs the trop 4) together again with Rudy Jarmillo.
  12. Dude, we have Starlin Castro. Yeah that's why Lee was tradeable, but on an intuitive level I was pretty high on Lee. He's a pretty impressive player. Lee = Alcides Escobar. I just don't see him hitting much in the majors. Also keep in mind he also had 34 errors last year in 122 games at low single A.
  13. I would love to see Jackson with the big club but he has nowhere to play. Even if you send colvin down, do you then platoon byrd and fukudome? Or have a threeway platoon for center and right?
  14. Maybe they feel that the economy is coming back and that they're getting an extremely team friendly deal by avoiding that awkward contract when he's like 33 and clearly going downhill. Still, 10 years is a really long time to be paying anyone a guaranteed amount of money, especially for a small-mid market team. No they feel like inflation is on their side. For example one dollar today had buying power worth $1.30 ten years ago. That 100million dollars payed out over the next ten years and backloaded will probably only amount to 70million dollars in 2011 money when the contract is over. If inflation continues at its current rate. So what do you think of the deal now?
  15. Stone gets paid to be controversial on the score. dont let it bother you. his job is to get people riled up and keep them listening. besides when Ha juk lee is a better defender yes but will be nothing special on offense. I'll take castro and let him develop into a better fielder any day.
  16. I would take a shot on diasuke as a fourth starter provided the prospects werent anything all that great and we ditched grabow. But the real issue is he has sucked for like 2 years now. Not sure if Riggins is a guy who can take on a reclamation project also. Either way, dude needs to find the movement he had on pitches when he was in Japan. Some of those pitches he threw like the supposed gyro ball had whiffle ball movement.
  17. that is the fattest thing I have ever heard. Too bad he's a middle infielder and not a lumbering DH type.
  18. has ramirez ever seen a pitch he didnt like, jesus.
  19. you guys are forgetting about the third baseman playing with his heels on the grass when a possible bunter is at the plate. In all seriousness I concur; he was pretty sharp in the past as another poster suggested and it wasnt cause we were all younger or more naive about the finer nuances of the game. Even if all he did was explain the obvious thats a heck of a lot better than some other butchers with a mic. Really what more do you want from a broadcaster, song trivia? He is a hack radio guy for reasons I suggested previously and some of his comments in the last 5 years may have clouded our judgement but all in all he was a pretty good broadcaster.
  20. That might not be a bad idea. I can see where they won't put the 3 hole pressure on Castro yet, but he will hit his way into that spot soon. No, he won't, but that wasn't the horrible part of the suggestion. It was batting Darwin and Byrd 1-2 on a team where Fukudome, Soto and Castro exist. But it's extremely unlikely that Castro will end up the Cubs' #3 hitter. He projects ideally to be an awesome #2. I dont know about Soto being a 1 or 2. I know he has the obp but he seems better suited in the middle of the lineup protecting aramis or pena. As for Stone, I really think he is just stirring the pot. The score pays him to be controversial so everything he says about the cubs is. no reason to get riled up. Omar vizquel had 20 errors as a rookie, castro will be fine.
  21. hahaha! yeah 4 days in. I hope that wasn't serious.
  22. Marlon Byrd apparently has been battling back problems the last week but according to Len and Bob there was no way he was missing this game. So maybe thats why he was noticeably swinging late today. Really though this begs the question of whether Quade is going to let injured guys play through it like Lee and Aramis did last year or make guys who arent prepared take a seat. Otherwise, spot on observations especially #10, these arent the pirates of 2004-9. I was also really surprised how empty the field was in 05 it was snowing and everyone stayed til the end despite Maddux giving up a bunch of runs.
  23. I don't think anybody here will disagree that Baker deserves to be facing all the lefties, so I wont adress that half of the platoon. As far as who is facing righties, I really don't see it as making any difference. DeWitt is probably the best hitter, but is pretty awful on defense. Baker has had awful numbers hitting righties in his career, but nobody has a platoon split that bad. He's probably the 2nd best hitter, as well as about an average defender... maybe a tick above. Barney is the worst hitter of the three, but his skillset probably isn't the type we have to worry about the sort of implosion we might see from Ronny Cedeno. Barney should be pretty much a carbon copy of Ryan Theriot last year (at least on offense) and if the reports are to be believed, he's a plus defender in the field. None of the three options are good. But they aren't far apart, either. Any way you want to cut it, we'll probably need to make a move for a 2B if we want to stay in the race all season. Blake Dewitt screams Bobby Hill to me. I see why people like him but there's just nothing about his game that is impressive at the major league level. I'm all for giving Barney a shot and sending Hill where ever
