  1. Can you explain what Boiler Up means? I know what a Boilermaker is, and that Boiler is a shortening of that mascot's name... but it's it like saying "Man up"? Joe Tiller's wife came up with it, while Tiller was still head coach there. As a Purdue grad, I hate the phrase and try to refrain from using it as much as possible. What do you think of Anthony Johnson so far? He's going to be a good one. I bet he's the leading scorer next year and makes the All-Freshman team this year. Maybe I'm too high on him... Some of the Illinois posters here were pretty down on him. I think the RS year was exactly what he needed. Like you said, wrong thread. I'll reply in the b-ball thread.
  2. What has been severely lacking so far is Purdue's defense. Teams are figuring out how to score on them, and Painter has yet to adjust. As you mentioned, they lack an inside presence. Granted, it's early in the season, but based on what I've seen so far, Carroll has not taken the step forward I had hoped this year and Marcius really isn't developing as quickly as many thought he would.

  4. How much extra are they going to have to offer up to get free agents to agree to wear those terrible new uniforms?
  5. Um, what's the other 13%? Theo dies of a brain aneurysm. It seems high, but actuarial science is still in its infancy, and you have to account for the genetic background of his father, Peter Gammons. There is a reason it is Archer's biggest fear.
  6. I'm going to one-up you and name three: Chuck Crim Mike Maksudian Willie Banks
  7. Pfftt... Amaury Telemaco's debut > that. Think he took a no-no into the 7th. Andrew Lorraine had a pretty good Cubs debut.
  8. You hate a mediocre-at-best team that Notre Dame will probably beat by at least two touchdowns?
  9. Will we see a similar contract coming for Dempster? Or Ramirez?
  10. I realize it's in Truffle's sig, but how the hell has no one mentioned sully's pending screen name change due to this news?
  11. According to Pat Hughes, the ball was hit to the hole between short and third, Castro made a good play, but the throw was late (Harrison is fast). Barney hustled toward first to back up the play in case the throw got away (it didn't), so no one was in position to cover second. Harrison saw that and took the base.
  12. Probably because that's not an accurate assessment of his production the last three years. He was bad in 2009...offensively anyway. He was a 4+ win player in 2010, which isn't bad at all. He's been about league average (OPS-wise) this season. People look at batting average and think he's a bad player. Accept the fact that he isn't going to hit for a great average and that he's going to strikeout quite a bit. Then realize that he runs well, can hit for decent power, is capable of drawing some walks, and plays a pretty good CF. I'm curious to see what he could do with a change of scenery and a more hitter-friendly environment. His OPS has been nothing to write home about either. If he was at least in the high .700s, that would be one thing, but his OPS over the past 3 years has been I think .650 something, .740 something, and .701 this season. Again, I'd take him, but wouldn't overpay for him. I don't think that anyone's advocating trading the farm for him, but you can't look at his OPS without putting it into context. He plays half his games in an environment that is essentially the anti-Coors Field.

  14. Would you be surprised if I told you that would be his 2nd lowest season OPS as a Cub? Currently tied for his career high in OPS+ though. Amazing what a radical shift we've seen over the last 5-7 years. Hell, it's been a pretty big shift just from last year to this year in terms of league-wide offensive production.

  16. Why do they still let him speak in public?
  17. Wow. Got a free breakfast burrito today and now this. Awesome!
  18. If you're going to compare their offensive numbers, you also have to compare the eras in which they played. Smith may have had a lower OPS, but he had a higher OPS+. He also stole more bases at a higher rate of success. If you put any value in WAR, Smith was much more valuable there, too.
  19. I can't see any team risk having to take on that entire contract just to block some other team from getting Soriano. The WSox picked up Rios and his huge deal. I don't think that was to block anyone but it is possible. Maybe a team looking for a DH or something. I'm not saying anything like this is going to happen but it seems slightly more possible than an outright trade before the deadline. Again, pure speculation on my part. Rios was 28, and had put up pretty good numbers for a CF (even though Toronto had him primarily playing a corner) for three straight seasons prior to that one. Soriano is 35, has battled injuries the past few seasons, no longer runs well, and has a reputation as a defensive liability (although he's not quite as bad as some perceive).

  21. Considering the deal he signed this past offseason to be a Cub, I don't think anyone would be shocked if he did the same thing this coming offseason, regardless of whether he finishes 2011 as a Cub or not. I don't think it's any secret to anyone that Wood wants to always be affiliated with the Cubs in some fashion.
  22. Isn't his velocity pretty much on par with Doug Davis' these days?
  23. Well, at least he'll be on a team where mediocrity is the norm. He'll fit in.
