  1. I've heard it mentioned a few times on either MLBN or Baseball Tonight. Has Gomes been terrible since he took his place? Cespedes in Boston: .288/.308/.460, 4 HR, 27 RBI Jonny Gomes in Oakland: .244/.327/.244, 0 HR, 5 RBI Gomes has had only 49 plate appearances in Oakland, while Cespedes has had 146 in Boston. Gentry, Moss, and Fuld have all played LF since Cespedes' departure, with Vogt filling in at 1B if Moss is in the OF. Someone with more time than me can slice and dice the numbers, but I don't believe there has been a huge drop off in offensive production from LF since his departure. Eyeballing it, it looks like the power production has been a little lower, with higher OBP.
  2. My apologies if this was already posted: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/dave-dombrowski-sends-billy-beane-funny-text-about-al-arms-race-045330297.html
  3. Close...it was his brother.
  4. Ozzie Guillen...at least offensively. Most of his value came from his defense, but offensively, he was worse than Dunston.
  5. It's a spectrum. Vizcaino is back, but he's a reliever and not because his stuff isn't good enough. Other guys may lose velocity, or have to adjust their repertoire to avoid throwing a certain pitch or pitch mix. Others still will just be the guys more prone to other injuries that don't necessarily require TJS. Taking Hoffman at a discount would make some sense at 19 or maybe even 13, but at 4 it's a very bad idea. Hudson was hardly the first pitcher to need a second TJS, either. Medlen and Jarrod Parker just this year. Beachy, too.
  6. Yep, and judging by her imdb page, she hasn't done much acting since then.
  7. yeah, paula abdul and janet jackson taught me a lot about life Madonna's "cherish" video put a spell on me. Billy Idol's "Cradle of Love" video...
  8. I have a Twins homer hanky from the 1991 World Series. One of my teachers in high school was from Minnesota, so he had his parents ship a bunch to him. We got into class, and he had put one on everyone's chairs.
  9. You're a cold-hearted snake, N&G. C-c-c-cold-hearted. I dunno, she was supposed to be about my age on that show, but at that point I was already insanely lusting over older hot TV teens and ladies. It didn't have to be an either/or thing. I was 14 when The Wonder Years started. Plenty of lust to go around at that age. ETA: My math is off. I was 13. Point still stands.
  10. Winnie was nice, but too much of a sweet girl next door type. Boring. Sam was spunky. Well, if Winnie was too boring for you there was always Becky Slater (who was played by Danica McKellar's sister).
  11. If we're going to talk about television from the late 80s/early 90s... Winnie Cooper, anyone?
  12. He had five hits in his first 38 plate appearances, with 12 strikeouts, two walks, one double, one triple, and one homer (.147/.211/.324). At AA, he started off with two hits in his first 20 at bats, with one home run and five strikeouts.
  13. He looks like he struggles to control the volume of his voice.
  14. He displayed a good amount of power, hitting 21 doubles and 17 home runs in 61 games between rookie ball and low A in 2012. His power took a bit of a dive last year, but I don't think it's fair to say it has yet to translate to games.
  15. Edwin Jackson money. Was the signing confirmed? MLBTradeRumors posted an update that made it sound like there was a holdup.
  16. But again, they aren't punishing him for positive tests. They're punishing him for lying to them and obstructing the investigation I am drawing a blank on the player who tested positive, and set up a fake website to represent the "company." To try to get away with it. Didn't he get an extended suspension? That was Melky Cabrera, right?
  17. By my count they have Kershaw, Greinke, Ryu, Haren, and Beckett, with Beckett being a bit of a wildcard coming off surgery. Billingsley is slated to be by sometime around mid-season. They also have Matt Magill, who made six starts for them last year but has struggled with command. Zach Lee will probably start at AAA. If they sign Tanaka, I imagine Beckett is the odd man out. He's only under contract through 2014 anyway. Haren is only on a one-year deal, although there is a vesting option for 2015 if he gets to 180 IP, which he hasn't done since 2011. It's highly possible Haren won't be back in 2015.
  18. Tim Collins of the Royals is also listed at 5'7".
  19. The "similar batters" section is great.
  20. True. He's probably not the best example. But someone who actually would be ready to pitch opening day or soon after would be a good candidate.
  21. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a player is traded mid-season in the final year of their contract, their new team is not able to make a qualifying offer, correct? I would think someone like Joba or Gavin Floyd might not mind signing a one-year deal with a team like the Cubs in order to re-establish their value in an effort to get a multi-year deal the following offseason. Knowing the Cubs could likely trade them in July gives them two things: 1. A possible chance to play for a contender later in the season 2. No worries about a qualifying offer. The latter is important as they won't have draft pick compensation attached to them the following offseason, which could make them a bit more appealing to other teams.
  22. I wouldn't classify Eaton as a "punch and judy" hitter. He showed some extra-base power in the minors (47 doubles one season, 10 homers the previous year). He's not going to hit 30 home runs, but he's not Juan Pierre either. He also played nearly as much CF as he did LF, and all signs point to him being capable defensively in CF...more so than Trumbo would be in LF. Furthermore, if you wish to make excuses for Trumbo's lack of production (Pujols hurt, Hamilton not hitting, the clubhouse coffee wasn't strong enough, etc.), you also have to account for the fact that Eaton was playing with a partially torn UCL. Comparing their WAR from 2013 is ridiculous. As for Skaggs, it's a bit premature to say that a now 22-year old who was ranked as one of the top 20 prospects in the game the past two seasons was never going to make Arizona's rotation.
  23. Holy [expletive] [expletive]. Does that include pitchers, as well? If not, I'd really love to see the stats for just position players.
  24. That's because he rarely steps inside the three-point arc. Same reason Ryne Smith didn't get to the line much. Of course, Stephens is bigger and more athletic than Smith, so you'd like to think they'd get him into the offense a little more other than just throwing up threes. I think he will eventually, but the value he adds outside the arc is so important at this point. He's already on pace to hit more 3's than Smith or Byrd did as a Juniors and you would have to imagine his shot totals go up when they start playing from behind in conference play. He might make more 3's this year than Smith or Byrd did as Seniors before it's all said and done. As long as he stays over 40% let him take as many as he wants from outside. Of course. I'm not necessarily complaining about it since he's basically their best shooter, just pointing out the reason why he's not going to get to the line much. I do believe he's capable of provide more than just a good outside shot though.
