  1. if jwilliams came through, like many of us expected, rusch & guzman wouldn't have been starting much. I don't think it would have affected Rusch much. Marshall took Williams' spot in the rotation and if Jerome was pitching well, it would have meant no Marshall. If they had then decided to pull Rusch from the rotation later, I'm not sure that they wouldn't have chosen Guzman.
  2. There's a long way to go in the season and there's no reason to extend a 40-year-old pitcher in mid-May who's coming off a pair of 4.00+ ERA seasons. And it doesn't really make much sense for Hendry, either, as that makes a big impact on what he's going to do with Wood.
  3. Blanco will probably catch a little more with Barrett DHing. Mabry will probably get some time, too. And Neifi can't DH if he's in the field.
  4. Was he actually being serious? It would take more than another year or two for Maddux to get into the Hall as a Cub (I doubt anything less than another three years with a World Series title would do it). And it would be a horrible move for Hendry to make. There's no real impact move for Hendry to make. Aside from finding a platoon partner for Jones and firing most of the coaching staff, Dusty, and then himself, there are no easy answers.
  5. The I-Cubs plate 5 on 2 HBPs, a walk, and 4 singles. They lead 6-0. Wuertz in to finish it out.
  6. Of course! Greenberg in to run for Sing after he was HBP. I doubt it was for Greenberg's speed since there's a runner in front of him. Hopefully he's okay. Pie lays down a 1-0 sac bunt for the first out in the inning. Booo.
  7. He was diagnosed with a strain in the shoulder, which I believe is technically a minor tear. Hendry would be correct in distinguishing it from a major tear, although depending on the question, it may be an odd choice of words. the question went something like this Kerry Wood has a reason for being injured, mulitple surgeries ect, why is it that Mark Prior takes so long to get ready Maybe he was responding to some general speculation he's been hearing or just trying to reinforce the idea that the shoulder strain wasn't significant damage. Kind of odd, but I wouldn't worry unless he doesn't pitch to rookies within the next ten days. Of course, even then it wouldn't necessarily mean that there was more damage, but rather a flare up. If Prior pitches in Mesa sometime around Friday and is on the same track Wood was on (2 times in Mesa followed by 2 rehab starts), he'd be on pace to return around June 8.
  8. I believe Ron said he's looking for Dope to return around mid-June.
  9. He was diagnosed with a strain in the shoulder, which I believe is technically a minor tear. Hendry would be correct in distinguishing it from a major tear, although depending on the question, it may be an odd choice of words.
  10. The whole Prior fascio is a [deleted] joke. Funny Hendry mentions Flordia in 2003 who didn't take off till after there was a change in managers. Please watch the language.
  11. Not a bad game for Fuld so far. He's 3-6 with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs, a SB, and a single shy of the cycle. Hmm. O'Malley struck out the first two batters of the 7th but was then replaced by Aardsma. He was at 83 pitches. Heck of a line for him: 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
  12. It looks like the guy closest to you intentionally smeared his eyeblack before the game.
  13. NU is still tied with Michigan and holds the tiebreaker with just a 4-game set left at Purdue (13-15) next weekend. Michigan hosts Iowa. They play Illinois State tomorrow night for their last chance to improve their 3-20 non-conference record. Brauer pitched a 7-inning no-hitter yesterday and was named one of three Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week.
  14. One of the great things about the Tribune Co. is that they've provided a consistent and increasing payroll. If the team doesn't do well, management doesn't have to worry that ownership is going to cut payroll and require them to shed some contracts. Management pretty much knows what they're going to have in the future and can make moves accordingly. A lot of GMs don't have that luxury.
  15. He pitched three innings, but that's all I saw. I can't remember what Wood's inning count was in the simulated game before pitching with Mesa, but his first outing with Mesa was three innings. Not sure why they're setting inning targets instead of pitch counts.
  16. Apparently the elbow strain was caused by making throws from the outfield during ST. Considering he's still not 100% and Lee should be back in four weeks, the move doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
  17. Stuck is right. Considering the numbers he has put up, they must've really tried to make the move to the outfield work. Of course, he's going to be 27 in August and is currently working through an elbow injury.
  18. Everyone must serve an apprenticeship before they get playing time. He got lucky when paired with Mabry. Can't say the same for Cedeno.
  19. He's still the hitting coach for most of the veterans. Clines is the hitting coach for most of the younger players, I believe. Really? I didn't know that. And I'm simultaneously stunned and outraged. And incontinent. Matthews proved his infinitesimal worth already. Why contnue to let him instruct hitters. I believe Sarge and Clines were splitting those duties when Sarge was the hitting coach, too. I seem to recall something about Dusty doing work with the hitters, as well, but that was back in 2003.
  20. He's still the hitting coach for most of the veterans. Clines is the hitting coach for most of the younger players, I believe. I'd like to see coaches who provided offensive scouting reports.
  21. Not only is it too soon, but there's no real chance of a fire sale. They don't need to free up salaries and Hendry isn't going to move his favorite players. Pierre is going to stay the rest of the season and Jones is going to be really hard to move. If they find a taker without having to take on a bad salary, great, but why would a team out there be jumping at a platoon outfielder with a 2+ year contract? They also don't need to free up an outfield spot unless Pie is ready, which he isn't (although Jim probably has other ideas). Ramirez isn't going anywhere and the odds that Wood or Maddux get moved are probably quite small. Dusty getting fired is probably more likely, and I don't see that happening. Hendry may move or release some guys, but only those whose value is relatively low.
  22. And another ump blows that call. Giles wasn't even close to leaving early.
  23. Yea his OPS isn't so great, and his slugging has tailed off remarkably this year. He still is an OBP machine, but the sudden major drop off in SLG% makes me think he might have been on something. 23 of their first 37 have been at home, where no left handers do any good slugging wise. Also, of their 14 road games, 9 were in the 1st/2nd week of the season. Just because someone is struggling to hit homers doesn't automatically mean they were on something. He played there last year and still slugged .470 or so. He's at .350 this year. That's quite a remarkable drop. I'm not saying he did or he didn't... Still a .545 SLG (1.008 OPS) outside of Petco last season. And does every hitter who's not hitting as well as he should be need to be linked with steroid use?
  24. Jones : .311 OBP 5 Walks Giles : .401 OBP 28 Walks Slugging? Slugging > Walk If the OPS's are similar, the guy with the OBP that is 90 points higher is more valuable. OPS correlates lmore closely to runs when OBP is multiplied by 1.5. i can't see how that generalization is possible when you combine those walks with a bunch of singles hitters. now put the walks on a team w/ manny, ortiz, nixon and varitek or arod, giambi, matsui, sheffield, and posada and maybe so. While the Cubs are 15th in SLG, they're also dead last in OBP. Is increasing OBP in front of a lack of power a worse of an idea than increasing SLG with behind a bunch of guys who aren't getting on base?
  25. His 2004-2005 numbers are significantly worse than his 2003 stats, though. If the two go to his splits of the past couple of seasons, he'll have another bad season.
