  1. I think it's because baseball is already "overloaded" with stats. We are just bombarded with stats when we watch a hitter up on the plate. Batting average, on base percentage, RBI's, runs, home runs, batting average vs. lefties, vs. righties, hitting streaks, ad nauseum. And this doesn't even mention the stats for pitchers. Football stats aren't too bad. We are more willing to accept a convenient stat such as QB rating, cause what else is there for a QB besides completion percentage, yard, TD's, and INT's. The QB rating is a handy stat to quantify how good a quarterback is. BTW, I think your QB rating formula is incomplete. I know that there is a "maximum" rating, and you don't need to be perfect in order to achieve it. The formula you give makes it seem like the maximum only occurs when a QB is perfect.
  2. I believe the main value of a manager is to motivate players to maximize their performance. This can be done by arguing with umps, keeping a happy clubhouse, instilling confidence in less experienced players, or any other number of ways. As far as game situations go, most managers will more or less do the same thing. Thye will look at the splits/charts, and make a percentage decision based on them, taking into account who's available. A computer can do that just as well. As far as players who are on a "hot streak", you can program that into a computer as well by looking at the stats from the last few games.
  3. I think the drop in power numbers is due to the fact that nobody can slug .700+ every year. He's still slugging .534 this year. That's a great percentage.
  4. Are you kidding me? Wow....any more details?
  5. Who would have predicted at the beginning of the year that Hill would have a CG shutout? Baseball makes fools of us all.
  6. You don't want Rich Hill's sister to have your babies? I want Rich Hill's babies to have my sister. I want my sister's babies to have Rich Hill.
  7. Smokey Burgess, Gene Baker, and Don Hoak. The last of which Ron Berler explained away by saying he "conquered his Cubness" hating the organization and ownership so much from his brief stay in Chicago. He went from a team that finished 98-55 the year before (Brooklyn) to the Cubs who were 60-94. Aside from that team, and the D-Backs, there have been no exceptions. And coincidently those are the only two teams that won the WS courtesy of a walk off hit in the bottom of the 9th in game 7.
  8. Thank you, Brett Tomko, for your latest masterpiece. :D
  9. I've had this idea for a sign when the Cubs play the Dodgers at Wrigley. Brett Tomko plays for the Dodgers and he is an avid and passionate painter in his spare time. In fact, he sometimes auctions off his original pieces to benefit charity. I say we go to one of his auctions and win the biggest painting up for auction. We then take a red marker and defile it with the words "Don't Quit Your Day Job" and then purchase seats right behind home plate for the Dodgers series, so that if he does pitch in the series, we can hold it up for all to see.
  10. Right as ESPN tuned into the telecast, Kennedy gets a hit.
  11. And just now, with a runner on 1st and one out, Morneau tries to extend a single into a double and gets tagged out easily at 2nd. Now instead of 1st and 3rd with 1 out (sac fly in order), it's man on 3rd with 2 outs.
  12. You don't need to listen all that closely.
  13. Says John Kruk while laughing "Who was that guy running?"
  14. It's not predicted by anyone. The expected win/lose records are produced using a formula.
  15. Amen. Spending money does not gaurantee a winning club. True. But spending money should not produce a team that is competing for the #1 draft pick. Anybody know the highest ranked payroll to finish dead last in the majors?
  16. The Red Sox having a LOSING RECORD against AL teams certainly is quite disappointing.
  17. From the box score, it looks like his wrist is fine.
  18. Not the Braves......anybody but the Braves.....
  19. Could be a useful forum. I've seen other sites with it, such as IlliniBoard.
  20. Did anyone seriously believe that the Big Hurt with a 500k base salary was a bad signing? He's the perfect DH.
  21. Griffey Jr. with the catch that broke his wrist.
  22. Wow, that is when you just tip your hat to the Pirates middle infielders.
  23. Wow, ESPN News just said the Pirates and the Cubs are tied at 1-1. Even ESPN doesn't think we can't hold on to this lead.
