    Basically I think one philosophical thing about baseball that has maintained throughout the years: it's much, much more sustainable and predictable to get arms through your system than through free agency/trades/whatever. That's also certainly true of position players (it's true of everything), but it's less of an issue. You can sign some hitter and he's probably gonna be who he always was. We were pretty damned worried about Bregman more than halfway through the season, and then he ends up being Bregman. Pitchers just blow up and die on you. The money/assets are super risky on them. If you just plan for most of them to blow up anyway, you want the youngest, cheapest pipeline going. And they have no horsefeathers pipeline man.

    This was a really dumb season. I’m not even mad at Hoyer that much. Anything that could go wrong in the pitching staff, went wrong. There’s only so much you can plan for. Obviously, PCA’s season was historic and magical and I’ll always treasure that. And the best thing I can say beyond that is they managed to surpass 2005 in making sure they at least made the playoffs. But woof. Not fun. my experience is at least partly colored by the fact I had to watch a 5 run lead blown and a 3 run lead blown in person.

    if the cubs lose here (and i'm not conceding that they will) this will be one of the most painful "good" seasons they've had. possibly the most painful since 2003.

    Kyler Gordon was apparently a full participant in practice today. If he's back to anywhere close to his 2024 level of play this team is a Super Bowl contender, IMO

    I don’t like how good Geno Smith looks. I need him to be terrible, like how bad he was when we faced him last year. JJ McCarthy level bad. I’m not worried about the Jets being a “trap” game. I don’t think this coaching staff will ever overlook anyone and they will prepare with the uttermost intensity week in and week out. I just think the Jets are, regrettably, not that bad. I wish they were terrible, they are not.

    I really hope this is one of those games where the Cubs get a guy in scoring position every inning and fail to score

    A real "take out the trash" game that the Bears absolutely, positively, have to win. And, unfortunately, I think it'll be tougher than it seems. Jets played the Packers and Lions both to a standstill and refused to win. Geno Smith has looked very competent. If Caleb was playing I'd feel supremely confident, but you never know with back ups. It'd be so, so, so nice to finish the first quarter of the season 3-1. A 2-2 start wouldn't be a disaster, particularly with the injury to Caleb, but really. You really want this win. Do whatever you have to to get it.

    The Jets have pissed me off. They play close with both the Packers and Lions and don't have the self-respect to win either of those games. I fully expect them to play us really tough (perhaps even beat us) because they're pissing me off and thats the type of thing they would do.

    I have no idea re: Keenum vs. Bagent honestly. I would tend towards the hot hand, but I also think you got some lightning in a bottle with Keenum that really may not keep going (especially because there were no less than 3 out routes that Keenum definitely didn't have the arm strength on and could have each been pick 6's). I trust in Ben to make the right call. But it's likely not a very easy call to make.

    Listen, in my opinion, Jackson’s hit was a clean hit, he led with his shoulder, he didn’t even make contact with Hurts’s head, and Hurts was still (barely) in bounds when he got hit. but I also knew without a doubt it would draw a penalty because it looked so violent when it happened and he’s a QB and that’s how they legislate the game now. And as the poster above said: if you saw an opposing player lay that hit on Caleb, would you want a flag? Yes. I think I would. still glad DeMarco Jackson laid the hit because Hurts was clearly not the game guy afterwards.

    What a cool game. Football is good again. this game cements to me that Ben Johnson is a football genius. The man just gets offense.

    I just wont take anyone seriously if they were bothered by how Caleb reacted when he thought he may have torn his hamstring. You're just not a serious football fan if it bothered you in the slightest.

    There's also a huge change in what constitutes a "good" defense and what is the bare minimum for an offense for a team to be successful. In 2000, you could construct a defense good enough that you could expect to hold a team to 14 or fewer points. That is simply not possible today. They have changed the rules and offenses are so much better at moving the ball that you cannot do that. You have to be able to put up at least 20 points to expect to win games. It'd be like trying to win in the NBA when you can only expect to put up 75 points a night. There's a bare minimum of offensive success necessary to be a "defensive" team.

    Seems like its literally every other year (even year syndrome?) the Minnesota Vikings Fraud their way to a 12+ game season. I don't know what kind of horrible Cardinals-level devil magic they use, and each time they get pantsed in the playoffs. This may be their most Fraudulent start yet. Hopefully the Bears and the NFC North denies them, because that team offends me. But keep Green Bay in last place please, thank you.

    I do feel a lot, lot better with Tyson Bagent as the starter than Case Keenum, but also he would definitely need a week of practice? So I don't know how to feel. I'm mentally already counting this game as a loss anyway, so I dunno.

    I can't describe how much I would hate this. It would make following a 162 game season feel almost completely pointless (like it often is in basketball). You play sooooooo many games, let them actually decide something!

    I feel like this will be a weird game and Keenum will be like, surprisingly good and the offense will be effective and the defense will give up 40 and we lose anyway. (Would that be weird? or expected?)
