They really, really, really don't want Zobrist in the outfield, huh? Because if his legs were still good I'd think the best arrangement would be Stella at 2b, Bryant at 3b and Zobrist at LF. But i'll trust the coaches here, that obviously isn't an option.

It's obvious why he has a spot (starter with a bad back, back up who's 39 years old) and its entirely justifiable to hate him for being absolutely terrible. Mystery solved.

Javier Baez's Plate Discipline (Or Lack Thereof)

Thanks, Duke, these posts have been fantastic and illuminating. So much to chew on. With Javy I feel like I can second your anecdotal evidence on him actually having something like an approach this year. (However simple and frustrating it can be at times) I'm thinking: what's the ceiling of a type of hitter Javy can be? And I'm thinking someone like Alfonso Soriano (maybe I'm reaching for a past Cub I'm most familiar with), who was a hacker, but who could get enough plate coverage that at-bats weren't just complete guessing games unless the pitcher threw a mistake. He was a mistake hitter, without a doubt, but he could reach out and foul off most balls out of the zone that he never got his K rate so high he wasn't a useful player. And, like Javy, he never took anything off his swing and had prodigious power. Of course maybe that kind of ability to make contact on pitches in and out of the zone isn't something that can be taught. But Javy has already made significant, significant progress in reaching those pitches. We shall see, every Baez is an adventure, and worth watching. -
40-16 is a purrty record. I like the whole "have 50% more games over .500 than actual losses" Wonder if we'll hit 50 wins before we hit 20 losses. This team is fun. :bow:

I do hope Soler is ok, that last hit he had was ripped into the left field corner. Both he and Heyward are starting to look the part, and if they're hitting, this already absurdly scary team gets scarier. And Fowler as well, though him sticking in the game encourages me. (Wouldn't be surprised if he gets the day off to let swelling come down in his hand if that happens)

It seems like we never really put out our 'top' lineup. In one way, it makes me happy because it means we have another gear to bust out. In another, it makes me sad because I know the real 'top' lineup is missing my favorite dongsmith. What would be your idea of a top lineup?
