So Brown is as good as gone. Again though: I can't see a reason a team would trade something away for Brown when they know he'll be available soon for just the cash. Maybe if there were several suitors competing, none of whom wanted to get beat to the punch. But in this case, I don't see that. Brown isn't going to be a life-or-death acquisition for anyone. I imagine they figured they would have to release him, but they probably really like Brown, and they realize that if they release him, he's going to be signing for less money elsewhere...so they're trying to do right by him by at least attempting to trade him, so he can keep that salary. Maybe if they release him they could re-sign him for less money?
