  1. He matches his highlighter with his tie on college gameday. He's horrible.
  2. And there you have it. We've come full circle.
  3. The best team had a chance to advance by winning the division. Nobody cares if the best team advances in the wild-card round. The four wild card WS winners since it's implementation in 1994 probably care. Which is pretty statistically appropriate to support the "crapshoot" ideology. All the more reason for a scenario that gives the best chance the best WC team advances. I realize it's still a crapshoot. I also realize it's a matter of opinion. My opinion is that the WC team has as a chance to win the WS as any other team. Take an extra day or two to allow for the nature of one game anomalies. You are the Digger Phelps of playoff-format opinions. Thanks. Good talk.
  4. God. I've hated him for so, so long.

  6. Oh lord no. Guaranteed elimination games are awesome. Nobody is dying to see the Game 1 of 3 between the Angels and Royals while the whole playoffs get pushed back a week. Yeah, a best of 3 makes no [expletive] sense. Makes it marginally (and I mean marginally) less of a crapshoot and drags it out and removes the amazigness of single elimination. How many best-of-three series did the cubs win a single game to start the year? You are giving a greater margin-for-error for the best team to advance. Is it still a crapshoot? Yeah. Does it make it less likely that it's not a coin toss? Yeah. Marginal or not, it would only "cost" one or two additional days. Not to mention I'd bet that ratings and viewership would be high, regardless. Exciting and fun factor of a one game playoff >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that very marginal removal of variance It's opinion and I realize that. I guess I'm just pessimistically thinking about the scenario when the cubs are the superior team and get screwed out of advancing because of some scrub pitcher having the game of his life. Give them a series to figure it out. But, agree to disagree. I understand both views.

  9. I'm late here, but I'm in favor of the second WC. Just wish they'd make it best of three.
  10. Ditto
  11. For me it's not just Baez, but the possible moves involving Turner and Hamels. It shows me that the FO believes they are close to competing for the playoffs. There have been no moves made by this FO involving the major league team that made me believe they were trying to compete or cheap flip options. There's probably a .1% chance I'm wrong, but the Hamels thing is moot. If the Phils wanted to trade him they would have a week ago. I hope I'm wrong, because it would probably be a low-cost trade by the cubs (in terms of prospects). But yes, I agree with your premise. It's encouraging the FO has the will and financial flexibility to claim a player making that money and focusing on winning in 2015.
  12. In his defense, I just searched AZL Cubs and found their milb page. When I clicked on box score it took me to July 3, 2014 when Soler was 1-2 with a K. The fact he didn't know Soler was in AAA and knocking on the doorstep of the big leagues is a little disconcerting, though. ETA: TT cleared up why the date was weird. And maybe (probably?) shuffle knew that all along and was trolling us.
  13. The overall turnaround in optimism about this team's future over the last week is astonishing. Not that I'm saying it's wrong (it was right all along), it's just amazing how one player's three game stretch enticed it. edit: maybe "overall" should be, "those that weren't previously optimistic now are". Thus, the board as overall.
  14. Good call. It's the Braves. 1996 ETA: 8 of the 10 oldest ballparks are in the AL.
  15. No Rizzo. Ugh. Also, the game looks like it may start in a rain delay.
  16. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_06_07_cspaaa_iowaaa_1&t=g_log A K, a walk, and a hit. He pitched against them 3 times, though. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&did=milb&gid=2014_06_07_cspaaa_iowaaa_1 http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&did=milb&gid=2014_05_23_cspaaa_iowaaa_1 http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=g_box&did=milb&gid=2014_04_25_iowaaa_cspaaa_1 All Javy's AB did not come against Flande, but a quick scan got me 3 for 13 with a walk and 5 K's in those games.
  17. I don't ever want him taking a first-pitch fastball in the zone. That's fair. Admittedly I missed the first AB and just caught Len saying he's only seen two pitches. I didn't think that fastball was a particularly easy pitch to drive in that AB, but I only got one quick look.
  18. September (April 2015): Alcantara Baez Rizzo Castro Soler Castillo, R Valbuena (Bryant) Castillo, W Mother of God.
  19. Just go ahead and sign Castillo while you're at it, Theo. Thx
  20. I'm not the brightest when it comes to waivers. Is "gave the rights" referring to the Cubs not even having to work out a trade? They just pay him and keep him?
  21. Change pants yet again. Could you imagine? This place would be partying like it was 2008!
  22. Trade for Turner. Sign Rusney. Bring up Soler.
