they have a bias against teams that do dumb stuff. some of their writers are even cub fans. Like sign Esteban Loaiza? i dont know if you read bp, but most of the writers there did indeed criticize the a's for the move. IMO the reaction would have been much more critical if Hendry had made the same deal. Do you even read BP?

Ya know what? On some level I agree with you. I was a little surprised to see Bobby Hill let go. He's everything Jim Tracy said he wants - a guy who can put the ball into play. Mack-O-Whack: It hurt to trade him, but a couple things come up. First, he's too streaky. He does much better as a spot starter (or even a few starts in a row) than being an everyday player. And, he strikes out too much. Not that I'd want to trade him, per se. But, I thought we got good value from him in Marte. Left Handed relievers don't come cheap. And my soon to be 5 year old loves saying his name (I've been taking her to games since she was 3 month old!) As for Sanchez - on the last Friday night home game, one of our local talking heads, Paul Alexander (who was fired last month as part of a station overhaul) had his booth set up out side of PNC Park. I asked him if he thought Freddy could compete with Jose for the everyday starting position for the upcoming season. He said to me: Two things come to mind here: Castillo hasn't been very healthy his first two seasons; and he has to hit both more HRs and for higher average. I'd bet Freddy is going to get at least 40 starts at second, 20 each at short and third. Caveat about third: Jose Bautista lights it up in Indy and plays his way onto the team. I think Getting rid of Bobby Hill was a bit shortsighted. No, he'll never be a star, but he can hit off of the bench and play 2nd & third. He'd have been behind Sanchez, to be sure. We have this guy who played 6 positions at Indy, Yuerendall DeCaster. It might his play that prompted the trade of Hill? Does the talking head know that Jason Bay is still on Pittsburgh? Thats what I was gonna say, maybe he was talking about the Penguins

Greenway is currently the 3rd rated OLB in the draft, so for him to sneak into the top 5, he's going to have to jump Hawk and Ryans, which will be pretty tough.

Well, I do know them well enough to know what they're going to do with the first pick the 2006 NFL draft... and that is > 0. It's the first week of January, there's no way you can be positive at this point who the Texans will draft. I would bet on the Jets, who need a QB, trading their first rounder and an extra pick or two to the Texans for the #1 overall. The Jets need a QB, and if Vince stays in school, the only premier QB available is going to be Leinart. The Saints are primed to take him at #2, so the only way for the Jets to get him is to move up to number one. Fortunately for them, the Texans dont need Bush. Sure, they might want him, but with Davis, he isn't a need. Anyway, I think they trade the pick, so how about this. If the Texans draft Bush, I'll use the avatar of your choice for a month, and if they trade the pick, you do likewise?

I can't imagine the Texans trading that pick. For one thing, fans would march on Reliant Stadium with torches and pitchforks if they trade it. And second, how would they explain to the players who threw games down the stretch that oops, you lost games on purpose for nothing? I think they do. They just resigned Davis to an extension, and they have a lot of years/cash invested in Carr. I say they trade down to 3 or 4, pick up a 2nd and a 3rd, or a future first, and draft D'Brickashaw. Regardless of whether one thinks they should do what you're saying above - and I don't - it's never going to happen. There's more for the Texans front office to consider than just what they think will work out best for the team on the field. They also have to worry about fan perception. This is a team that has been either mediocre or downright awful through the entire existence of the franchise. The fans need someone to rally around, and Reggie Bush is that guy. I guarantee you that his jersey will be one of the top ten sellers next year. The McNabb pick over Ricky Williams was unpopular in Philly, but trading down and drafting an obscure offensive lineman (doubt many Texans fans know who Ferguson is) over a dynamic superstar Heisman winner would alienate many fans. The only guy other possible move for them would be to pick Young if he comes out, because while it would probably be a foolish pick, he's a hometown hero and would be accepted by the fan base. Hahah how much do you know about the Texans and their front office and fan base? I'm thinking 0. I know we're Cub fans, but sometimes, teams really do what's best for their team. And in this case, trading the number one pick, and picking up at the very least 1extra pick, along with a top 5 pick this season, is the right thing to do.

Sorry Matt. 4 - Oops, if you declared last year, you would have made a few million bucks. Sorry Matt. 5 - Oops, instead of getting drafted by the 49ers, and staying in sunny California, you're gonna get drafted by the Saints. Sorry Matt.

Well, I finally finished watching the game (Tivo) Great game, it was everything I thought last years game would be (oops) quick thoughts Vince Young is an unbelievable college player, but to QB in the NFL he is going to have to fix his mechanics. It's not so much that he throws sidearm, but that he throws off balance and off his back foot all the time. He completed 30 passes today, and 10 of them were little 5 yard dump offs to his wide open tight end. He'll play in the league one way or another, he's too damn talented. And big. People get caught up in how fast he is, and they dont notice that he's bigger than LenDale White. He played amazing and they deserved to win. Leinart, on the other hand, was mostly terrific. He got out of his rhythym, and his mechanics bit the dust a few times, but for the most part, he was dialing it up. He's really impressive when he gets on a run because he just hits his receivers perfectly. Notice how many times Texas WR's caught the ball with one knee on the ground. Young throws off his back foot and leads his ball too low. If Young comes out this year, it will be interesting to see how he grades. Leinart will grade above Eli and Alex Smith, that's for sure. I wonder if the Jets will try to trade up to number one to take him ahead of the Saints, I'm sure Houston wants to trade that pick. Pete Carroll should have come to us for advice on Young, besides his freshman year (a game we won 65-13), he's never run the ball on us at all. In 2004, he was 8-23 for 86 yards and he had 54 yards on 16 rushes, and this year, despite killing our crappy DB's, he only ran for 45 yards on 17 carries.

The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker. Yep, should have kept Grudz. Too bad Hendry went the Moneyball route. :( Hendry, Moneyball? I'm sure he never read it, and I know he's never filled his roster that way. He missed the bible of baseball? Hard to believe. People are so ridiculous. Have you even read the book? Moneyball is about how a team with a low payroll tried to stay competitive in a division with high payroll teams by saving money and cutting out inefficiencies. It just so happened that a lot of teams undervalued the ability to get on base, so they capitalized on that. The book got popular, a lot of people learned a little bit about sabrmetrics because of it, and now some people are so afraid of their old beliefs being challenged that now you can't even mention obp without people getting their panties in a twist.

At this point in the off-season, I really just can't get too upset at the loss of Eduardo Perez. Signing him at this point would be like putting on a rain coat in a hurricane.
