  1. Wuertz has been good for two straight seasons, last year and the second half of 2004. He stays.
  2. I'd rather have Hairston as the backup outfielder than Matos because he's better and we have him already. Plus, it give Walker more PT and an extra roster spot.
  3. I'd rather have Soriano at second than Walker, so if there is a way to get Soriano at somewhat of a discount price now, while getting rid of Walker for a prospect or something, I'm all for it. Soriano makes errors, but he does have pretty decent range and a good arm. He's like Ramriez when he was on the Pirates. The guy just puts up offensive numbers so far superior to the league average at second that I could live with the defensive lapses. Soriano would give us three 30 HR/100 RBI guys and a second 30-40 steal guy to go along with Pierre. Soriano actually has a career 80% success rate on steals, with his best year being last year: 30 out of 32.
  4. If were weren't the only team in baseball whose best players get hurt every year.
  5. If Dusty plays the young players we have and they perform, I think a lot of fans would warm up to him.
  6. I want to see him in the rotation and get a 2 or 3 start audition while we wait for someone to come back. Zambrano Rusch Maddux Williams Guzman (called up after we need the 5th starter)
  7. If we are talking about who was the best team and would win the most games in a major league season, I think it's Cuba.
  8. We CANNOT trade this guy. Our one strength is our lights out bullpen. I'd actually like to see the Cubs have one of those for a change. Wuertz was our best setup man last year, and Ohman was a great loogy, and they are the 5th and 6th men in the pen now, which is exactly the kind of depth we need. Williamson (if healthy, and he seems to be 100% right now) is one of the most dominating setup men in baseball. Howry and Eyre were both top 10 setup men last year and Dempster had one of the best save percentages in the league last year to go along with a great ERA and improved K/BB ratio. We need all of these guys this year because even with Prior and Wood being out right now and our lineup being only slightly above average, a pen that can cash in the win 9 out of 10 times the starter gives them a lead will keep us in contention all year.
  9. I'd love to hear Dusty give the same criticism to deserving veterans. His double standard, however, will ensure that never happens. Agreed, I don't remember his quotes when Lenny Harris was the starting 3B, and I'd love to see them, but I am sure when Lenny was hitting .120 with a .350 OPS, Dusty was saying something like he was hitting well, but his hits were going to fielders too often, so he just had bad luck and needed to play through it.
  10. Dude (no pun intended), this isn't Jason Dubois we are talking about here. Dusty played him a lot at the end of last year and has stated that Murton proved himself last year. He passed the test.
  11. Basically all he would be good for then is to reduce Murton's playing time. I don't see that improving the team. Exactly what I said goony. Not to mention, Nixon is injury prone, expensive and may begin to decline at this point in his career when have the same thing in basically a rookie already on our team. Nixon is a name, yes, but let's not forget how good Murton was last season in a decent number ABs. I think we can count on him.
  12. Excellent work. Nice to see you and UK making statistical contributions.
  13. I wouldn't say we got pretty good value for either, regardless of situation. Let's not forget Juan Cruz... Cruz...if Baylor hadn't removed him from the starting rotation because of his freaking W-L record in 2002, I wouldn't be surprised if he was still in the rotation today.
  14. It kills you? Ramirez I can see. But Walker isn't nearly as slow as him, and Murton is reasonably fast himself. Anyway, I highly doubt there are many situations in which Dusty left a speedster on the bench in the 9th with Ramirez on base and the team down by a run. The way I look at it is if you are down by a run in the 9th, you should sub a pinch runner in for every single man who reaches on base as long as their is a faster runner on the bench to go in for him. I don't care about the possible consequences if you end up tying the game and play continues. I would rather see us put Hairston in for Barrett/Blanco on the bases (with the other catcher already out of the game) and take our best chance of tying the game. You can call me crazy, but I would rather tie the game and put Neifi, Cedeno or whoever at catcher than lose it in the 9th because the runner wasn't fast enough to go for home on a base hit or break up a DP.
  15. I was a huge fan of any outfield that had Glenallen in it. Nice, so was I. That guy could flat out mash. I regard him as the best pinch hitter in Cubs history. I can't remember how many times he came up with a bomb off the bench late in games in 98 and 99.
  16. So I take it you were a big fan of the Henry/Sosa/Hill outfield?
  17. 72 runs above avg. for his career defensively, Perez is at 103 runs with most of it being at SS. Of course, Neifi is about 221 runs below avg. for his career offensively, while Ryno was 260 runs above avg. This indicates to me that Neifi is best used as a late inning defenisve replacement. Cool, well, I still stick to the idea of starting Walker and replacing him with Neifi EVERY SINGLE GAME we have a lead in. I just hope Dusty knows how to use them. I highly doubt it though. Furthermore, I think every team should put a pinch runner in at least once a game. It kills me to watch them leave guys like Walker, Ramirez or Murton in there down by a run or two in the 9th when we have/had Hairston, Patterson, Goodwin sitting on the bench.
  18. Sandberg's value was that he could hit in addition to playing good defense. Neifi is barely above average defensively and hits as well as my little sister. I agree with you, but just from watching Walker with Cubs, not from the media perception, stats or anything else, I'd say Walker is as bad a defensive player as Neifi is an offensive player. I do like Walker a lot as a hitter though.
  19. I think Murton and Nixon are very comparable offensive players, with Murton on an upward track and Nixon on a downward one, so I don't know if there is much value in platooning them. I would imagine the would want starting pitching, which we don't have to give right now.
  20. Not if you look at their career. Walker has been about 81 runs better than Perez, while having played in 130 less games. Well, I guess we don't know what happens to Perez' defensive runs value when he plays a whole season at second. I already found stats that indicate he is Sandberg's equal at second base based on his career numbers. That is what intrigues me so much about him because Sandberg was a hell of a defensive player, and while I was too young to watch him play in his prime, all indications are from what I have heard about him and what I have seen stat wise that his defense played a big part in the Cubs success while he played. Just how much that superior quality of defense is worth vs. offensive production is still in question, but it seems to be quite valuable by your runs better stats. Can you find some of Sandberg's runs better defensive stats?
  21. Interesting, how about how many runs below average Walker let up? Same for Neifi with offense? Last year or their careers? Walker was 6 runs below avg. on defense, 10 runs above avg. offensively. Perez was 16 runs above avg. on defense, and 16 runs below avg. offensively. That's good enough. I suppose if you just project Walker's numbers from last year over a whole season, he's better than Neifi, but if Neifi started at second the whole season, his runs above avg. defensively would have been higher. All in all, these stats indicate Walker is a little better than Neifi in terms of these stats. Still, I think it has been proven these players are closer to each other in value than many of us thought.
  22. I wouldn't say we got pretty good value for either, regardless of situation. I guess it depends on your perception. Also, I'd include Hawkins in this, we got spectacular value him, I would have taken just Aardsma or Williams at the time. I valued Patterson and Sosa as worthless to us when we traded them, and I like Hairston and Spears.
  23. As much as it seems the Cubs want to get rid of Walker, Hendry will keep him on the team before he just gives him away. I thought he got pretty good value for Sosa and Patterson considering their situations at the time.
  24. Interesting, how about how many runs below average Walker let up? Same for Neifi with offense?
  25. Let me reiterate that I want Walker to be the starting second baseman with Neifi replacing him for D every game we have a late lead in, but how can figure out how many more hits or extra bases Neifi takes away per game?
