  1. That's certainly possible, and he could very well have flamed out because of it. In the Cubs defense, I can't think of any top end pitchers that were abused in one year and had it cost them their career in the last ten years, and nearly all top pitchers are abused at some point if not all the time. I would have thought that month off would have given him time to recover. Name me one 21, 22, 23 year old pitcher that was abused like Prior and didn't suffer any consequences. Mark Buerhle Buerhle, at 23 in 2002, had one game over more than 120 pitches. It was the last game of the year. He had none over 130. He had 10 games under 100, and was almost always around 103-106. In 2003, at 22/23, Prior had 3 games under 100 pitches (1 of which was coming back from the shoulder injury caused by the collision with Giles). He had 10 games over 120 pitches, 4 of which were over 130. Buerhle doesn't even come close to Prior in the abused pitcher discussion. What about Sabathia?

  3. No, thanks. He's the only guy we have who is under 40, good and stays healthy.

  5. I for one don't give a damn if they give him 10 days to recover from that; I'm still mad about the accumulation of all the other injuries and time off.
  6. They also didn't wear helmets back in the day, and faced several terrible hitters in just about every lineup that they didn't have to bear down for. tonight on WGN, david kaplan talked to Kevin Tapani, and they talked about pitch counts....he said that when he pitched, it was expected of them to make it 8 innings to not let the team down, now a good outing is comsidered 6 innings or so, and you cant say that money has nothing to do with it, i dont care if they wore helmets or not, baseball is big business and the team wants to protect the investment..... Horrible post. Come on, don't even try to tell me that everything would have played out the same if everything that happened to Prior happened to Rusch instead....no freaking way. i don't really know what you mean there at all i just didn't like the post because the implication that prior is choosing not to pitch because he's so rich seems silly to me. What I got from his post is that Prior is being babied too much. What I said was that if Rusch had the exact same injuries as Prior has had the last three years, do you think the Cubs would have been as patient with him? They'd have probably released his fat butt a long time ago.

  8. I never liked him that much when we had him, even in 2003 and 2004. I felt the Cubs got ripped off pretty bad by him after that pathetic first year, and even when he was doing well in 03 and 04, he wasn't the player he was before we got him. I was excited when the Cubs signed Alou because I thought we were getting a .325-.350 hitter with decent power but what he we ended up with was a slugger and what I thought was a less valuable hitter than what he should have been.
  9. I guess the Cubs think he hasn't been "aggressive" enough the last few years.

  11. Just to note again, I didn't call him a wimp; that was just goony's interpretation of what I wrote. I really just can't understand why everybody values stats so much in evaluating a player over a scout's eye, and for damn good reason........yet when it comes to injuries, the same people try to poke holes in the injury history or pretty much ignore it all together and go with their "scout's eye" and say everything will be fine.
  12. And if you take the time to look at the history of pitcher abuse by the Cubs against a very young Prior, you might see some other possibilities. Regardless, I wouldn't feel vindicated because you think you've convinced the masses that Prior is a wimp. I never said he was wimp. I just said, he got hurt, he is hurt, and he is gonna get hurt. I don't know exactly why that is.
  13. Why do we have to shed our like for him? That's absurd. Speaking of facing the facts, did you read my post about the abuse of Prior early in his career? Do you really think he's just a pansy who can't take the pain? What I was refering to was how people get it in their head that they like a certain player, and they will blind themselves to, and bash others for any criticism of the player at all no matter how logical it is or if it turns out to be proven true. I've offered a variety of possibilities: traumatophobia, weak body, low tolerance for pain (pansy). There are probably others too.
  14. Yeah, of course we all want him to be pitching and pitching well, but at some point we need to shed our bias and liking of him and face the facts. I was one of the first to do this and preached to the masses; I was just saying it feels nice to be right now that others are following....considering the flak I took for defaming him.
  15. Someone else spending that much time in the bathroom usually doesn't do much for me. :-s :?:
  16. Miller is a FA after this year, so he'll want to pitch. Wood is too, and the Cubs won't pick up that option if he doesn't do anything this year. And Prior, it doesn't matter what you do to safeguard, he will miss significant time just like he does every year.
  17. This thread makes me feel vindicated, and it feels stupendous. I'd trade it for a healthy Prior though.
  18. I've got a Bagwell rookie card and many valuable hockey and basketball cards and rookies.
  19. Yeah, I opened 3 boxes and counted how many rookies I had. It was like 6. I figured if the odds of getting a rookie at all were that little, it must be too much for a Gordon, so I'll sell the other seven and end up with a decent profit. I got a couple Rich Hill and Anthony Reyes rookies, not worth anything, but nice to have. Also got 5 Mantle inserts worth 10-15 each.
  20. I don't know how many of you are collectors, there is an Alex Gordon rookie card that wasn't supposed to be released in the 2006 topps walmart sets. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2429888 I own 10 such sealed boxes. They were 10 bucks each. The odds of me having a Gordon are slim, but I'd make $1,000 or more if I had one. The alternative is to sell them on ebay and end up making about a sure 80-120 dollars in profit. I don't have much disposable income, so I am leaning toward selling the boxes on ebay.
  21. For The Beatles, the songs I really like are Come Together, Here Comes the Sun and In My Life.
  22. It's really tough to choose, but if anyone is up for offering their five favorite songs from either of these two, mine are: Get Off My Cloud-65 (great riffs by Jones/nice, steady beats from Watts as always) Gimme Shelter-69 (Richards wrote this one/cool, classic sound) Can't You Hear Me Knocking-71 (Richards plays lead first half, Taylor second, both phenominal) Rocks Off-72 (Cool all the way around, the horns and piano are nice additions) Tumbling Dice-72 (Probably my favorite of all if I had to pick one, I love the lyrics and guitar)
  23. Big Smooth is a great nickname for Marshall.
  24. Hollandsworth over Murton last year. Estes over Cruz. Harris over Hiatt and Leon (although Hiatt was older but still not a vet/experienced) Karros vs. Choi is a tough one, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I suppose Hollandworth did get about 10 starts within the first three weeks after the Cubs called up Murton. after that, the choice was Lawton who came to the Cubs with a .380 OBP season going. after Lawton left, Murton got the bulk of the PT. saying Dubois stopped getting PT after April would be...oh, what's the word I am looking for...I know, saying that would be wrong. maybe his .500 or so OPS in about 140 May and June plate appearances lead to him losing his platoon role. yes, Cruz did ride pine in favor of Estes. if you were checking, you would probably note that Cruz had an even worse ERA than Estes that year. Slightly, but not as a starter. Cruz was always better as a starter. If Baylor had never yanked him from the rotation in 2002, I think he'd still be a consistent 10-12 game winner with a 4.25-4.75 ERA. And I hope he dominates the Cubs but we still win this week. Maybe that's wrong, but he's always been one of my favorite players and the Cubs gave him away for nothing while playing overpaid bums like Estes and Rusch
  25. Actually, I would have also taken Prior and Zambrano over Harris in a platoon. The only thing that would stop me would be the injury risk, certainly not the numbers/ability.
