  1. What's up with Pat? He seemed a lot more excited calling last years playoffs? Last year woke him up from a 5 year nightmare and re-energized him. This year he realizes that, no matter how awesome that was, the NLDS doesn't really mean that much.
  2. If Maddon wasn't going to use LaStella in a 13-inning game in which the team got 1 hit in 27 ABs and trotted Montgomery out there for 5 innings of relief, Cahill or Hammel should have been on this roster.
  3. Cubs get it done tonight. 6-2.
  4. Let's hope Omar is correct on this one.
  5. He outthought himself on the OF with the lineup, then left Arrietta in to hit with a guy on 2nd, let him go an inning too long, and then went full LaRussa with the bullpen. Strop and Rondon only faced one guy each. Because he screwed up starting Soler, and because he went LaRussa with the pen and double switching, he PH Ross who can't run as opposed to the zero RH on the bench and as opposed to just letting Coghlan hit against a LHP. So he GIDP'd with 2 on. Then he left Montgomery in there for a 5th inning of work. Pretty much summed it up. He also needlessly took Heyward out when he brought Chapman in because the P spot was up 4th the next inning. If you're in any position for Chapman having that at-bat, it means you are still winning and that at bat means nothing. I doubt Heyward gets to the Gillaspie ball anyway, but it would have been nice to find out.
  6. in 10 minutes Thanks, here it is: [tweet] [/tweet]
  7. Did I miss the playoff roster? Shouldn't this be out already?
  8. Yep, he has made over $400MM in his career so far (counting his guaranteed money from Adidas and the Bulls/Knicks). He offers her $1MM last year and no one ever finds out about this. That's 0.25% of his career earnings, which is equivalent to $2,500 on a person that has made $1MM in career earnings. He's a moron. It took this to make you realize that? Oh, no, this is the icing on the cake. The SAT issue and not listening to his doctors the past 4 years pretty much sealed that up. Along with basically every interview he's ever done.
  9. Doesn't help them at all. Plus the 3 way tie is more fun to watch. i'd much rather root against having to potentially face the best pitcher in the NL twice in 5 games. i'll root for madness in the AL for the fun. plus the mets with thor only once is my ideal opponent so i'd like to lock that in If that's what you're rooting for (as I am), then we want the Mets to clinch a spot in the wild card game on Saturday so Thor would pitch the wild card game. If the Mets don't clinch on Saturday, Thor pitches Sunday and would be ready for Game 1 (and game 5, if necessary) of the NLDS should the Mets get through the Wild Card game.
  10. As a Saints fan, would you have traded Drew Brees to Minnesota for the 1st and 4th they gave for Sam Bradford? * *Not sure it would have worked cap-wise, but just give me your answer regardless of cap

  12. This whole thing has been handled well by the Marlins/Fernandez Family. That being said, just a long week of incredibly sad/emotional scenes in Miami. Heartbreaking.
  13. Derrick Rose has to have the worst PR/Managment representation of any high profile athlete ever. Guess that's what happens when you aren't smart enough to take your own SAT and trust your [expletive] brother to handle everything. How his agent (BJ Armstrong) hasn't talked sense into him by now is beyond me.
  14. I don't want to be the guy to make an awful "traded for a bag of balls" joke, but I guess we all have to do something we don't want to do. This is insane: http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/bag-jose-fernandez-signed-baseballs-washes-miami-beach/story?id=42393013 I'm assuming they were on the boat. Damn.
  15. also GB has had trash OL from time to time. You don't need an awesome line. But you do need to give your QB either a plathora of skill position players or a great offensive line. You can't be weak on the line and have marginal skill position players. One or two talents isn't enough. GB also has a ton of designed rollouts/moving pockets that mitigate that problem As does Seattle. Mike Martz did none of that with Cutler and he paid the price, Trestman and Gase did a decent job of keeping him alive with moving pockets. So far, Loggains hasn't done that much, though Hoyer seemed to be on the move a bit more this past week.
  16. A lot of that is smoke and mirrors, ask Russell Wilson. Their line has been trash so far this year.
  17. Not necessarily. Last year Game 1 was at, what, 5:30 ET? And that was a Friday as well. That was in St. Louis. I assume he's asking because of the night game restrictions at Wrigley. There are no postseason night game restrictions at Wrigley. They've had Friday night postseason games there before, including Game 3 vs. the Braves when Prior beat Maddux in 2003. The only way it's not a night game is if TV wants it that way.
  18. 2.28 ERA, actually! And a 1.94 if you want to get technical and round up. But yeah, hard to believe that one bad start is the difference between an amazing year and a legendary one. It would have been only the 6th time in the National League since 2000 for a starter to have an ERA under 2.00. The other 5 were Greinke, Arrieta, Kershaw (twice), and Clemens. Honestly, despite that stat posted in the rotation thread about how basically Hendricks and Lester have been identical in the 2nd half, I think Lester gets it based on more wins, IP, and K's. Assuming, that is, the writers don't give it to Jose Fernandez, which would be a classy, but more importantly an acceptable thing to do considering that coming into today Fernandez was the pitcher with the highest WAR in the majors, so it's not like it would be undeserved if they give it to him posthumously out of respect, he's rightfully earned it despite the tragedy. I would advocate giving it to Fernandez for his actual accomplishments. Hopefully if he does win, it's not painted as some BS win as he's a legitimate choice. My top-5 ballot would be: Fernandez, Scherzer, Syndergaard, Lester, Hendricks.
  19. If the NL got the DH next year, you'd probably see Almora in CF and Heyward in RF almost every day with Soler/Schwarber rotating between LF and DH. Obviously, they'd utilize the DH to get most of the regulars "semi-days off" but that would most likely be your "normal" arrangement. And the Cubs would love every minute of it.
  20. Fernandez leading MLB in pitcher WAR per fangraphs: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2016&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0 I know it ultimately doesn't mean anything, but I hope he wins the Cy Young to at least give one last public honor for his family. I'm really bummed out about this.
  21. If you wanna argue that Belichick is the best NFL coach ever, have at it. But arguing across sports? There's far, far too many differences to make any kind of reasonable comparison. My entire premise is that football coaches are, far and away, more important than in any other sport, at least the major US team sports, and if he's the best there, he has to be the best out of all of them.
  22. Bill Belichick is the best coach of all time, right? Probably in any sport, but for sure in the 4 major US sports. Football is easily the sport where coaching makes the most difference and he's been the best coach in an era of forced "parity".
  23. Incredible catcher reaction on the Contreras HR
  24. Agreed. FSU -2.5 feels like stealing, right? I just put down a sizeable wager on that before it went up and now I'm going to spend all week feeling like I missed something. I feel the same way, I plan on jumping on them as one of my bigger bets of the week when I place my bets for the games this weekend. Their best DB is out for a few weeks, but still, 2.5? I just don't see them losing that game. If they only win by 1 or 2, I'll just chalk that up as a bad beat.
  25. Yep, this should be the rotation for the first round. And ideally that series doesn't make it to Lackey because the Cubs won the first 3.
