  1. If we don't get Peavy, Jim Hendry just essentially let Kerry Wood ($10mill) go and replaced him with Aaron Miles ($2.5mill), Kevin Gregg($5mill), Joey Gathright($800K), and (likely $1.5mill) a backup catcher. Awesomeness. I would have preferred Wood, Koyie Hill, and 2 homeless guys.
  2. Why would you srop MB so low vs LHP? He is a switch hitter. I didn't look it up, but I think he is much better vs LHP than RHP anyway. I'm guessing he forgot Bradley switch hits. Because yes, he is an amazing hitter vs. LHPs. Correct, total brain fart on my part. Good god, that lineup will mash lefties.
  3. Any chance we could get an Illini only college basketball thread?

  5. I went with a group of 12 guys in 2004. We got tickets the day they went on sale and had no problem getting 12 together for 2 games. First game we were in the last row of the lower level between home and 3rd base. Second game we were in the upper level behind home plate. You should be OK getting tickets. Some tips about the area: stay in downtown Denver at least the day of the game, try and hit some of the mountain stuff outside of the city, the Coors brewery is a nice little side trip, and the brew pub at Coors Field is a good stop before the game. They actually invented Blue Moon there and sold the recipe to Coors. When we were there, they had 2 for 1 beers from the time the gates opened until 15 minutes before the game started. Good times!
  6. Meh, we've seen pretty clearly lately that its not how much money you spend, but how well you've spent it. Just look at the two teams that had to pay luxury taxes this year...the Yanks and the Tigers didn't even come close to making the playoffs. And the two WS teams, the Rays and the Phils superstars were all homegrown. Ya, but the Phils will eventually have to sign all of those guys. The Rays can win, but they have a few year window, whereas the Yankees have made the playoffs 13 of 14 years and the time they didn't (last year) they won 89 games. With that payroll, it'll be pretty tough to lose 90 games or something like that. Sure, you can win by drafting well and whatnot, but I really doubt Tampa has a 13 year run of playoffs.
  7. Baseball's salary system is a freaking joke. I don't even care if the Yankees don't make the playoffs or win the World Series. Something needs to be done about this. I know I'll get some "look at the Rays" posts. Let me know when the Rays make the playoffs 10 years in a row. Never going to happen unless they open the checkbook to resign all of their guys. Can't we at least have a fake salary cap/floor. Like $180 million cap and $60 million dollar floor?
  8. ND will win by 30+. Harangody might seriously get tired of scoring if Koshwal gets into any kind of foul trouble. DePaul can be decent and they've been getting the ball inside to Koshwal lately (especially in the Win vs. St. Louis last night), but ND is too tough. DePaul's best chance is to turn it into a track meet, but I honestly don't think Wainwright is smart enough to realize that they should do that. He values not turning the ball over, despite not actually running an offense. It's weird. In his 4 years as coach, their TO rate has been in the top 40 in the country despite having an overall piss poor offensive output.
  9. Why? I'd rather see the Packers make it than the Vikings if the Bears were out of it. I hate them both, but I respect the Packers a little. Nah, I agree with UMF on this one. Though I don't think it's the opinion of a majority of Packer fans that the Vikes are a bigger rival than the Bears. I think it's true in the western part of the state, but I think in the corridor from south of Green Bay to the stateline, the Bears are thought of as a bigger rival. See, I agree about at least respecting the Packers. The Vikings have always had a bunch of punks on their team (John Randle, the early Cris Carter, that guy who showed the Bears up after returning a fumble a few years ago) and they play in that garbage indoor stadium playing that stupid horn 500 times a game. Just something about that franchise angers me. The Packers have the tradition, stadium, etc... that makes them respectable. And Favre was great there forever. The only thing that the Packers have ever really done to anger me was when they took out McMahon on a dirty play, but I was like 5 then, so that doesn't even bother me that much.
  10. Just like the 3-12 Cardinals had nothing to play for a few years back when they beat the Vikings to knock them out of the playoffs? That's completely different though. That team was playing the spoiler role, so they had that to play for. That is motivation. The Giants have no motivaiton whatsoever. They'll be resting guys and basically just going through the motions and trying to avoid injuries. I'd probably rather have them play a crappy team than play a good team that has already clinched everything they can. I wouldn't count on Coughlin mailing it in. They played NE tough last year in the last game when they really had nothing to play for, and it helped start their momentum toward the Super Bowl. Jacobs probably doesn't play because he's hurt, but I would be Eli starts and plays the whole game, as does most of their starting offense and defense.
  11. Olney says no one is offering much to Fuentes and the Cardinals could have a 3/15-18 deal on the table for him. At that price, should the Cubs get in the bidding? I'm not the guy's biggest fan, but if you get him for 3/$15, that's a decent deal...and you keep him away from the Cards.
  12. So, its OK to almost end a guy's career or life with a slash or high stick, but make a few comments about sloppy 2nds and you are banned? Great to know. That's absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 1) Strawman 2) Prior records matter 3) The only time a guy's "career or life" was almost ended by a high stick/slashing incident was McSorely, and he never played in the NHL again, iirc. Seriously apete, you don't appear to know what you are talking about. Didn't that guy who slammed the guys head into the ice play again? I remember Claude Lemieux boarding the bejesus out of Draper and playing again in the league. Chris Simon played after multiple transgressions. OK, maybe they weren't slashes, but other on-ice transgressions that are much more damaging than some words. I know Avery's a pain in the ass and has done some borderline illegal stuff on the ice, but if words are enough to get someone banned from the league, then that's just dumb. There's a reason why the NHL isn't more popular and its decisions like this...and having your main TV contract with VS.

  14. Yeah, that's not suprising. Between the drugs, the cheating and the grades, Sampson did a bang-up job. Jesus. Quick question; how common do you think something like this is? I mean, it is college afterall. I'm sure some teams are much worse than others, but I always kind of wonder. when I was at DePaul, the basketball team got to live in these swanky, condo-style dorms. I'm positive that all those dudes did was smoke pot and bang white girls. You would be correct. My girlfriend (now wife) was on the volleyball team. Some of her teammates were those white girls getting banged. Apparently Steven Hunter was quite popular with the white girl population at DePaul.
  15. Left with "concussion like symptoms".
  16. Tebow in 3D? You better wear a chastity belt or you may be ejected from the theater.
  17. I mostly agree, but if it means the end of Felix Pie as a Cub, that's sad. This guy could have netted us a big time player via trade 2 or 3 years ago and we gave him, what, 300 at bats at the major league level? Because Fukudome sucked last year, Pie is paying the price. Even though Pie wasn't good in his time last April, I still think he should have been given the chance to play against all RHP all of last season. While the Edmonds signing worked out well, the Cubs still would have won the division without him and it would have given them a chance to see if Pie really sucked or not.
  18. Advertisers don't want to pay for a Jeff "Mr. Marlin" Conine retrospective. The most popular teams will get the most time, even if the entire league runs the channel. Advertising dollars are very important, especially for a new network. Interesting that nothing on the Cubs or White Sox that early though, Chicago is a pretty large baseball market.
  19. This is the dumbest signing from Jim Hendry in a long time. Isn't Pie's FLOOR to be Joey Gathright? I mean, seriously? If we had just traded 6 guys for Peavy and we needed roster filler, this would be fine. Another example of Hendry letting Lou run the front office as well. Lou hates Pie and Fukudome, so Hendry is forced into signing replacements for those guys and having to do it in the media. Maybe if Lou wasn't telling everyone with ears that we need a left handed hitting RF, we could have gotten one for cheaper or something. I have a bad feeling about this season. It could be 2004 all over again. Signing Joey Gathright probably won't have anything to do with it, but it stinks nonetheless.
  20. Now they can get Peavy from the Padres for Escobar and whoever else. They have the money because they couldn't sign Burnett. NL East is going to be good next year.
  21. You knew this was coming. Would he be worse in RF or LF than Adam Dunn? Discuss.
  22. Shouldn't this be in green? That's the lamest excuse ever from universities. I guess the basketball players that play every weekday don't have finals. Or Division 2 football players.
  23. Derosa is a nice player but he's not nearly good enough to hold up a trade for far better player. He's replacable, and just because you don't care about his age doesn't mean that it's not an issue. No, that production is not replaceable at 2B. Now if you tell me you are working on a Furcal deal after DeRo gets moved for Peavy, then we'll talk. But let's not make it seem that DeRo is some scrub player that can be easily replaced by a Fontenot or old ass veteran. Yeah, DeRosa really showed up in the playoffs when he fumbled an easy DP in Game 2 (opening the floodgates) and then went 0-4 in Game 3. Furthermore, why does DeRosa seem to skate by with mistakes while someone like Soriano never does? I can remember a few times during the season he made dumb defensive or baserunning plays, and nothing was mentioned. Because he doesn't have a franchise changing albatross of a contract. Or because he's white and gritty.
  24. I agree. I would rather have Gregg close than Marmol, but the same 25. I would think they should keep Pie on the major league roster rather than get rid of him (out of options) despite the fact that Hoffpauir would bring more to the table. Or maybe just go with 11 pitchers for the first few weeks (have Wuertz or Shark in AAA) and carry both Pie and Hoffpauir.
