A trade to the Yankees? :D LOL!
  2. Looking for a new bridge to live under, Cuse? Always. Once you live under a bridge you never go back. Well, of course you don't go back. You called for a one way bridge.
  3. by "his" do you mean Steve Stone? If I'm reading you right, it sounds like you're suggesting Stone may eventually join Kasper in the booth? I like BB, but that would be interesting, though many on here would be disappointed. Yes, I was referring to Stone. I know there is a significant contingent that dislikes Stone on the board. I'll just say that I'm not one of them and hope this thread doesn't spiral into another lengthy Stone debate. I'd very much like to see a Kasper/Stone booth. But, that is probably less realistic the longer Brenly remains under contract. I think the Giants' managerial opening last year was the only team Brenly might possibly land with as a manager.
  4. My thoughts exactly.

  6. Does anyone remember how long Brenly's contract runs? With his reportedly tight relationship with McDonough, he may spend the year biding his time if Brenly only signed a one year deal, somewhat remeniscent of his waiting out the Joe Carter/Dave Otto debacle. Ah yes, the good ol' days of the Joe Carterism threads.
  7. I've run into Manning twice in bars around Indy, and he wasn't a jerk either time. He didn't buy me a drink or invite me to hang with him and his party, but I still don't think that makes him a jerk.
  8. Thanks for that... This is more or less what I was trying to get at with the last post or two. The bolded statement above just isn't true, accept for marijuana, which isn't what is at issue here. The problem with "use" prosecutions is that a person must use it "knowingly or intentionally". The defense that someone slipped you a mickey, so to speak, pretty much kills any such prosecution. Other than that, he is mostly dead on. Oh, yeah. As far as US Attorneys and federal prosecutions go, unless you have an eye witness, video tape, confession on tape and an ordained priest as a witness, they generally don't take stuff to trial. (Any AUSAs out there?)
  9. nor should anyone with a career OPS+ of 87. Who belongs to that OPS+? (Edit for clarification).
  10. Though Bonds in 2001 came very close to changing that balance for himself. And Mizzou: I'll take a team that can draw a walk every time to one that can make solid contact every time - every time. Every single time.
  11. I think a lot of the Dawson affection comes from us geezers (34?) who watched him play nearly every game on WGN. Much like Sammy Sosa, Dawson carried the Cubs on his back for inconceivable stretches when the rest of the team absolutely stunk. And, most of us will remember with fondness the quiet grace that he demonstrated while playing on insufferable teams. Dawson really was a giant and, for people like me, perception no doubt clouds reality when it comes to Andre. I remember being in my dorm with a couple of guys and watching the games in Pittsburgh in 1991 when he blasted Grand Slams in back to back games, only to have the Cubs lose. As such, I really don't have an interest in looking into his numbers too far when it comes to the Hall. (Truth be told, I think the HOF is a crock anyway, but that is another post in another thread). I'll gladly bear the schmuck standard for remembering Dawson's legacy just as it is, without the need for comparison. In this instance, I accept it as a simple guilty pleasure.
  12. Dawson should get into the Hall for no other reason than his "Blank Contract" offer to become a Cub. The uniqueness of that move alone should qualify him. That doesn't even take into account his other heroic feat of needing damn near the whole Padres roster to hold him back from beating Eric Show to death...
  13. I don't see any irresponsibility here. Plenty of teasers are reported during the hot stove season. Besides, Carroll has sufficiently put himself on the line. If no trade occurs, or no report is later made that such a trade was close, Carroll has opened himself up to criticism (if not dismissal) for his flimsy reporting if he cannot defend his tease.
  14. The Marquis signing was an obvious one, what with Hendry's recent appreciation for players with French (or French sounding) names: -Jason Dubois -Juan Pierre -Jacque Jones -Marquis Grissom -Jason Marquis Then why didn't he go after Mike Piazza, then? Although there were rumors Hendry was interested in Tony Graffanino. The only way Piazza and Graffanino would be considered even part French is if their ancestors bought Gallic slave women following Rome's conquest of Gaul.

  16. The devolution of the Cubs' outfield is comical: 2003: Alou, Patterson/Lofton, Sosa 2004: Alou, Patterson, Sosa 2005: Hollandsworth, Patterson, Burnitz (w/Dubois, Murton and Lawton) 2006: Murton, Pierre, Jones 2007: Murton?, Jones?, Soriano, Pie?, Floyd?
  17. Being a lefty is good, but you also need the name. "Sterling Hitchcock" is a quality big league name.
  18. We are now in the midst of, what, the fifth year of the Hendry era? We have lived through: -4 1/2 offseasons; -4 seasons of mid-season pick-ups; -2 managerial selections; -4 Spring Trainings; and, -4 Cub Conventions; Chicago teams are followed by a number of local papers alone, churning out 100's of articles a year which, either explicitly or implicitly, reveal Hendry's philosophies. At the very least, the vast amounts of available media allow for subjective determinations of what Hendry's philosophies are. However, I for one don't think the man's philosophy is even remotely secret. If posters choose to rely on these rather fertile areas to use there powers of induction, I welcome their contribution to the board. I don't have to agree, but I welcome it. Naked speculation is a funny notion. I don't think inductive reasoning applies. However, speculation that a poster's conclusion or post had no thought behind it is, itself, naked speculation. Is it not?
  19. You're nuts. He hit more major league home runs last year than in all of his other professional years combined. He's a significant horse the Cubs were missing last year during the stretch.
  20. You mean besides the fact that you don't play for the Cubs? So, jerseys are supposed to advertise fact? If that is the case, I guess I'm supposed to believe there are 14,000 Zambrano's walking around Wrigley when I go to a game? If someone chooses to put their own name on a jersey, I don't take offense that they never played for the team. I can make the mental adjustment that some guy named Finkleman in a Cub jersey two rows in front of me probably isn't avoiding his responsibilities in the dugout.
  21. Did you ask Whitey Herzog?
  22. I never understood why you're a douchebag (in some circles) for putting your own name on a jersey, yet it is somehow macho to honor another man by putting his name on your own back. Such a public display of man love always seemed more emasculating to me. That isn't to say I really give a crap whichever one someone chooses.
  23. One stood for the National Anthem and one didn't?
  24. Same could be said for Soriano? Definitely. But I don't think Soriano will be a tub of lard in four years :) My wife also once thought fit 30 year olds couldn't turn into tubs of lard in four years. Jokes on her...
  25. Doc Brown, a DeLoreon and the Flux Capacitor. Personally, I think its a shame the way Sosa is now perceived by many.
