  1. If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts, we'd all have a wonderful Christmas. -- Joe Hackett
  2. The irony is Stone wasn't as critical when it was a team 30 games under 500. He only became Steve Stone, defender of all truth and justice once he had beefs with the players. Absolute hogwash.
  3. STUNNING DEVELOPMENT!! Wade Miller is unsure whether he will pitch for the Cubs. Ever. Low risk my ass. $1M is still $1M.
  4. According to Baseball Tonite, after the game, ARam said (paraphrasing), "Everyone always talks about us not scoring runs. Well, we aren't shutting anyone down, either." Finger pointing, "mischaracterized" radio interviews--the second half is going to suck...worse.
  5. I'm stunned that 1) anyone really expects anything out of Miller in light of his injury history and Wood's struggles from the same surgery, and 2) anyone believes he has any value at all. Hendry's run at injured pitchers needs to end. Miller, Williamson, Sirotka, Brownlie, and Grant Johnson are all pitchers that Hendry has taken injury fliers on. Well, it isn't working. Perhaps it is a reaction to the Cubs letting Leiber walk without ponying up bigger money to keep him, only to see him go on to limited success. I don't know. But, I do know the "low risk, high reward" defense ain't cutting it. Its not low risk because the organization inappropriately puts too much stock in the people's recovery. And, we certainly haven't seen the high reward component of the defense. Now, surprise, surprise, Hendry is willing to break the bank for a high school pitcher selected in the 11th round who is coming off an injury (Huseby). Not only is it bizarre, but its pissing off the other MLB teams because he is again messing with the signing bonus slotting. Chris Carpenter is a great story. Why is it a great story? Because it is so freaking unusual. Reliance on Carpenter being the norm isn't wise. (Oh, and Carpenter isn't exactly the model of health lately, either.)
  6. Would it be worth sending him back down to Triple A to regain his confidence? Or see if he can fight through it? Lets ask Corey Patterson.
  7. Murton is taking his eye off the ball right before his swing. I've emphasised it before, sometimes it is as simple as watching the bat make contact with the ball.
  8. Ouch. Brenly, on how close the Crawford boxes are, "Its certainly reachable for every one in the lineup tonite. Even Juan Pierre sent one that almost went out." Lift a dumbbell sometime, Juan.
  9. You're nuts. Hendry has tweaked it three years in a row. That much tweaking can only result in awesome execution, or a rash.
  10. Well, Berkman has 2 hr and 4 rbi tonite. From strictly a fantasy baseball standpoint... HOORAY!
  11. nope Neifi must be tied up working out an extension with Jim Hendry in the clubhouse.
  12. i'd rather have wuertz. or farnsworth. Or Aardsma. I pass on Aardsma. He and Novoa are interchangeable. Straight, fast junk.
  13. I'm not so sure. I don't think its clear even from the replay that Ronny got the bag with his foot. The point is, players get the call lots of times even if their foot never gets within a 10 inch radius of the bag. That was never the point.
  14. Whomever can get the ball over the freaking plate with consistency gets my vote. Seven walks for Marmol tonite? Jesus. Does Rothschild give out give out backrubs for each BB or something? two were intentional, but the way he was going tonight, he may have walked those guys anyway. i just don't see the sense in having two raw guys who have barely pitched at AA in the rotation when you've got a 26 year old hill and proclaimed savior in guzman in AAA. I don't disagree. I would give Guzman the nod just to use him before he gets injured again. Then Hill can have his spot. I think perhaps the bigger issue is why EACH of these guys, by and large, regress when Dusty/Rothschild/Pole get their hands on them. Marmol was spectacular early, but has faded equally spectacularly. Sure, its the majors rather than AAA. But, you would think the talent of one of these guys would have a shelf life of more than one or two games in the Show.

  17. The Pistons' window has closed with an impressive "thud". Flip Saunders will now be an even bigger fall guy than he was after the playoffs. How does Larry Brown look now, Mr. Dumars?
  18. At least we didn't have to give Baltimore $16M to take him. That would just be silly.
  19. Not happening. Boy, you know the hero worship here has gone to Bruce's head when he refuses to even give his opinion on a rumor... The opinion WAS given. Ohhhh. On a more serious note, Bruce, since you're lurking here, have you ever crossed paths with Peter Gammons? There have been a lot of accolades and great stories related recently due to his unexpected surgery, and I was wondering if you had any personal notes to pass on. (Sorry for the potential thread hijacking).

  21. didn't bill simmons write an article once basically saying he thought wade boggs wasn't that great because he walked all the time? I think he wrote something along the lines of "not a franchise player" because he was an OBP guy, not a run producer, but I can't remember fully. I guess that just begs the question of whether or not HRs/SLG are needed for a guy to be considered a franchise player. Ichiro doesn't really have them, but I would argue that Ichiro brings more to the table than did Boggs or Gwynn. ichiro might bring more different things to the table, but when it comes to the main course, boggs was showing up with filet mignon and ichiro's got a sirloin. "These are a few of my more different things..."
  22. Doesn't the term "Fire Sale" imply that you are giving away the farm? That is, in baseball, you are actually giving up talent. While shipping off Nevin, Williamson, Neifi, and Jones (dare I dream) would be nice to the extent the Cubs open up roster space, I don't expect the kind of talent in return that would warrant defining it as a fire sale. Classic fire sales like the Marlins and Padres have perfected actually moved talent in efforts to retool. Like so many aspects of his job, I have no expectation that Hendry grasps that concept.
  23. They need to get Bynum back first. Then they'll be unbeatable. He's more of a "Waiting to Be Turned Into Glue" horse than a thoroughbred.
