  1. Its clear that Dusty is starting to insulate himself from criticism. While I personally no longer have any faith that Rothschild is a special pitching coach, I wonder how MacPhail feels about Dusty throwing his hand-picked guy under the bus? In other Dusty news, its not surprising that Bruce Miles is the only media member to realize the following about Dusty's alleged interest with the Dodgers: Link
  2. I guess I have two comments. First, whatever he is doing it isn't working. More importantly, it hasn't worked for three years with respect to getting pitchers to adhere to fundamentals. In that time period, the staff has changed (rather dramatically). So, responsibility must fall on management. Second, my guess is that Baker isn't fining anybody. That doesn't seem to be his nature, likely prefering that the Kangeroo Court hands out such fines. In addition, that clubhouse is a sieve.
  3. Rothschild did use a mound visit. IIRC, it was during the AB of the second guy he walked. Man, I don't remember seeing that on TV. Matter of fact, I thought Brenly commented on the fact nobody came out to talk to him. I do remember Barrett going out to talk to him though. I never saw Rothschild go out, but my attention was diverted early. I do remember seeing Dempster look toward the dugout and shake his head "no". I thought he may have been telling someone that he didn't need a visit.
  4. Remlinger is on the third base side of the mound with his momentum moving away from first. Lofton is on the first base side of the plate with his momentum moving towards first. Three guesses on who wins that footrace. I'm not arguing that. I just take issue with your assertion that Lofton was closer to first than Remlinger. You said:
  5. Honestly, if we're fielding a team with pitchers too old and immobile to at least ATTEMPT to field their position, we have MUCH bigger problems than that play last night. It's not that he's immobile, it's just that there's no way in hell he outruns Lofton, who is considerably faster AND closer to first base to begin with. IF Rem is a righty, he may beat him to the bag. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if Remlinger DOES get over there, Lee flips him the ball and Lofton is more than likely safe because he beats Rem to the bag, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Since when is 90 feet closer than 60ish feet?
  6. The lack of team fundamentals, with particular emphasis on the pitchers, is nothing new under this coaching staff's leadership. It is a continuing black eye despite a significant turnover in personnel over the last three years. As such, it leads to a pretty easy conclusion.
  7. He has time to turn into Wade Boggs. Didn't he spend something like 7 years in the minors before getting his shot? Not Burroughs, he was in the majors at 21. I'd say that he projects to be a Bill Mueller. I was talking about Boggs spending 7 years in the minors. My point was that Burroughs may be able to eventually find his stroke again on the farm. Being a lefty with limited speed and power, thats why I thought of Boggs.

    If

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a wonderful Christmas.
  10. I hope you are right. If the Cubs spend just to spend available cash, they had better be on one year deals only. Don't get locked in with this ravel.
  11. Scariest Dusty related quote of the day for me was:
  12. There is really no reason to contact them prior to a deal, is there? If you try to send him through the process, you can pull him back if he is claimed. In the event that he is claimed, you can always try to work a deal out at that time with the team. Regardless, Hairston's salary, youth and versatility make him a pretty valuable asset to a team. I doubt he would get too far on the waiver wire. Bad teams may even want him if they can get him. EDIT: Take out youth. I didn't realize he was 29 already. Regardless, I think he still has too much value to get through the waiver wire, depending, of course, where the trade partner is sitting.

    Amazin' A's

The A's are now 16-3 since the All Star break.
  14. My suspicions about Sosa notwithstanding, I agree with this to the extent that it didn't receive the attention it should have. After all, he was hit so hard that Sosa's helmut shattered. When is the last time we've seen that?
  15. water under the bridge my friend... everyone (fans, cubs, critics, etc...) should just look forward. Hoops = Mark McGuire?
  16. Can public figures sue for slander? Not quite sure, that's a slipper slope. We need an attorney, "JC!!!!" Yes, they can. But, the standard is higher. The public figure or official must prove actual malice, that is, with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.
  17. Maybe Franklin doesn't speak or read english that well...
  18. Names on the back are redundant. Buy a freaking program, cheapskates.
  19. Didn't Chief running back Joe Delaney die trying to save a kid from drowning? I don't really disagree with your base premise, that athletic achievement shouldn't be confused with heroism. But there have been plenty of sports figures who are true heroes. Um, Drew Rosenhaus (sp) also saved a kids life recently, and nobody's calling him a hero. That is because it was at a resort pool and Rosenhaus had lifeguard training. According to the accounts I've heard, Rosenhaus never put his life or well being in peril. While his actions are admirable, they aren't heroic, IMO.
  20. Replace "DFA Macias" with "Send down Mitre" and that's how I expect the transactions to go down. That wont work. Nomar and williamson currently do not count against the 40 man roster, since they are on the sixty day DL. So, we need to clear two spots to make room for the two players. Hense I am DFAing two people. Allthough, i agree, they will find some way to keep macias. Doh, now that I think about it, i think we only have 39 guys on the 40 man right now, so we only have to DFA one person. *sigh* Koronka, and to a lesser extent, Rohlicek, may be considered as possible 40 man casualties. With the squeeze coming next year, ridding the 40 man now of one of these guys could provide future flexibility.
  21. It doesn't surprise me at all if Corey is recalled sooner rather than later. With the presence of Lawton at the top of the order, the need for Hairston disappears. Hairston was never a Dusty favorite, anyway, and I don't think that is even up for debate. With the infusion of Lawton and Nomar in the lineup, Corey's offensive struggles are more tolerable. Despite his obvious troubles, Corey remains at least a partial threat with his speed and power, moreso than most .220-.230 hitters, anyway. While I liked the idea of sending Corey down, I was never convinced that the Cubs were committed to it. I always thought he'd return pretty quickly, with or without the adjustment results the Cubs had hoped for. I suspect within the week we will see: Lawton Walker Lee Burnitz ARam Nomar Cpatt Barrett Or, if Dusty wants to get wacky: Lawton Lee Walker Aram Burnitz Nomar CPatt Barrett
  22. Has anyone yet mentioned the irony that within 24 hours of Ryno's arguably finest hour, Palmeiro experienced his worst? [-X
  23. Speculation is that Grissom may be released when Winn joins the Giants on Tuesday. I hope Jim is done acquiring outfielders.
  24. A shot at what, an everyday ML player? He sure doesn't look like one to me. I see him and I see Doug Dascenzo, without the crafty mound presence.
