  1. During the recent 8 game losing streak, the following pitchers lost: Maddux Prior Williams Mitre Wood Maddux Prior Novoa Since the high water mark of June 11 when the Cubs were 6 games over .500, they have lost 18 times, 8 of which are accounted for above. The other losses can be attributed to Maddux x 2, Mitre x 2, Rusch x 2, Zambrano, Remmy, Koronka and Ohman. I don't see an inordinate number of losses coming from Wood/Prior fill ins. You are going to expect losses from bullpen guys like Ohman, Remmy, etc. Rusch and Mitre were slated to be #5/ML pen guys anyway, so I don't necessary consider them "fill ins". Blaming the Cubs poor play during that stretch on injuries to starting pitching doesn't persuade me.
  2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with people drawing conclusions based on available information. For purposes of a discussion, threads would go nowhere, have no substance, and receive little feedback if people weren't willing to apply available information, limited though it may be, and share their opinions and analysis. The responsible and reasonable community members all realize that these are predictions based on incomplete information. Such is life. You can't wait until Hill has a five year ML career to start analyzing it in hindsight. What good would that do? How interesting would that be? Most opinions/conclusions communicated herein are responsible, many including tacit or express disclaimers regarding the fact that such conclusions are based on limited data. If conclusions aren't draw and disseminated in threads like this, NSBB would be no more than a virtual bulletin board with no necessity for discussion.
  3. I agree with Wastra. The Cubs will need some help to win the WC. If a fan of another team told me that they would win a playoff spot with Hollandsworth/Hairston/Burnitz in the OF, I'd laugh them out of the room. Beating up on the Pirates and a faultering Marlins' squad doesn't give me confidence that our dear Cubs have turned a corner. They need to play upper echelon teams tougher, more consistantly, before I will honestly believe the WC is in sight.
  4. I don't know Hill's righty/lefty splits, so maybe you guys can help me. From what I've seen of his curve, it is relatively "slow". Thus, my worry is that as a LOOGY, Hill loses a bit of that lefty/lefty advantage. I would think that having a big slow breaking ball eliminates some of the deceptiveness of being pitched to from the same side that you are batting from. Certainly, his curve would still be difficult to hit, but it wouldn't be due to any lefty/lefty advantage, just the movement in its own right. However, that is just my own theory.
  5. Just think what Farnsworth would have done to the Marlins if he were still on the team when Greenberg was beaned!
  6. I have to go with Adrian Beltre here. Seattle got enamored by a fluke season and dropped a boatload of cash. You simply don't pay that kind of money based on a one year performance. Eric Milton doesn't surprise me, nor should he have surprised the Reds if they had done their job. He does not have the stuff for that ballpark and has been a pitcher in decline. Beltran has struggled in large part due to injury. In addition, I don't think he will have the makeup to exist long term in NY. I think that was a bad move by the Mets, and I think the Yankees' lack of interest suggests that Beltran was not fit for the Big Apple. Maggs' deal is still a good one for the Tigers. His injury was unforeseen and he appears to be getting his stroke back. The out clause also protects the Tigers, so it remains a good contract, IMO. I can't remember the others on the list, but I think Beltre is clearly the worst in terms of $$ and production.
  7. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to stick Holla at 1B, and Murton or Grieve in the OF.
  8. I don't mind the pen coming in. They need work after the long AS break. The pen is too long as it is and I think relievers need relatively consistent work to stay sharp. Save Kerry for his next start, I say.
  9. Someone needs to whisper in his ear, "Maddux has more homers than you this year."
  10. Don't mean to be mean, but: http://images.sportsline.com/images/baseball/mlb/players/60x80/7724.jpg = :clown:
  11. Ready to put this to bed? What makes you say that? While Bonds hasn't been publicly identified as a target, we know he is by virtue of the FBI undercover operation following him and the tax implications. Bonds is no more in the clear now than he was before Conte's plea. Generally speaking, prosecutors don't try to convict people for possession charges just due to evidence of ingestion. However, that does not mean that Bonds isn't subject to trafficing, distribution, and perjury charges in his own right. While there is little public information available in support of the former charges, the latter seems to be in play. I remain skeptical of anything Conte or his attorney may say with respect to cooperation simply because I have some experience with plea deals and the expectation of assistance, not to mention the fact that Conte has freely lied to the press before.

  14. He has not agreed to further cooperation. See http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/bal-balco715,1,6776528.story "Conte said he would not be required to assist in the prosecution of anyone else involved in the investigation." Thus, Barry is probably safe since he admitted to receiving packages and using them, but not to knowing what they contained. Prosecution would probably require Conte's help and testimony that he spoke to Barry and Barry understood they were steroids. If the Plea is approved, he will not be required to testify.... I don't think Barry is safe. Your link surprised me because SportsCenter said he would cooperate. At the same time, Conte has lied so much during the course of this thing, I don't really listen to what he says in the press. Feds don't just give out sweetheart deals and help people serve their sentences on home detention.
  15. Link Victor Conte has accepted a plea deal in which he will plead guilty to one count of distributing and one count of laundering. For the plea, he has agreed to fully cooperate with the government. If Barry is in hot water over his testimony (e.g. perjury), I suspect this event may open the door for charges to be filed in the not too distant future.
  16. Cuban is anything but conventional, so I think he would be a fantastic owner. He is committed to winning and holds people accountable. He doesn't let sentimentality chain him down. Even though I am extremely tradition oriented and would fear some of his suggestions, I would welcome Cuban as an owner.
  17. For the record, I still think Dusty is nuts.
  18. LOL! Pawalek has a great line: 12 IP, 19Ks, 0.00 ERA, W-L 0-2 Its nice to see an initial Cub draft pick having success. The previous three, Brownlie, Harvey and Johnson don't inspire me at this point.
  19. <-------------------Hating Goony and Sethuel1 for stupid reminders.
  20. Or the ump for calling Lee out (correctly). I don't like Prior out for the 8th. Nice catch by Walker. He should get a new hat.
  21. 59 pitches for Prior, 84 for Redman. Mark's on pace to be able to finish 7 right around 100. It was a good thing I expressed my concern early. Mark obviously got wind and straightened up.
  22. :ohnoes: Holy crap! I could totally see the Cubs acquiring Grissom. I am going to rely on Hendry's, "No rentals," comment to subside my fears.
  23. Lets hope someone hits a HR so he doesn't have to run through people again. Feel free to use this power again.
