  1. Are you a fan of 5.02 ERAs also? I dare say you won't find a soul on this board that doesn't have some level of affection and/or deep respect for Maddux, either as a Cub or as a masterful pitcher. But, his time has clearly passed. He is a mere shell of his former self and he is costing a boatload. As a Cardinal fan, I'm sure you revel in the fact that the Cubs are committed to paying his wrinkled arm $9M next year. And, I just can't stomach another argument about the use of wins as an evaluation tool for a pitcher.
  2. The timing of Walker's comments last week along with Hairston's current complaints indicate to me that Dusty lost this team a while back. They will certainly rally around him and say all the right things when asked point blank, but it seems that some player frustration with Dusty is beginning to boil to the top.
  3. I saw this and was appauled by the classlessness of this man. Family committments my arse. What a complete and utter loser.
  4. With Lee's injured shoulder and the need for another bat on the bench, should Scott McClain be considered as a bench guy? He could provide some more righty pop, and give both ARam and Lee blows as necessary. He is a journeyman who is hitting in the .280's for Iowa with 18 homers. He wouldn't be blocking anyone and nobody would care if he rots on the bench. Just a thought so Lee's shoulder doesn't like like shaved roast beef before September.
  5. I personally don't ever want Blanco to play. Every time I hear his name, I hear Slim Whitman singing "Una Paloma Blanca" for some reason. Blanco has made Bako's last few seasons appear to be Johnny Bench-esque. Even without considering the length of the contract (2 years), that was money poorly spent.
  6. Barrett entered the league in 1998. He played 22 games at C, 3 at 3B. 1999: 59 C, 66 3B, 2 SS 2000: 28 C, 55 3B 2001: 131 C 2002: 110 C, 6 1B 2003: 68 C 2004: 130 C Thus, he has been primarily a catcher in the majors since 2001.
  7. Its been interesting in my lifetime watching the Braves go from an atrocious, perennial laughing stock to the organization it is today.
  8. Pie's injury is the biggest reason I wouldn't consider a call up anytime soon. He will need time to get reaclimated to his league. However, I don't really buy the argument that Pie would suffer the same fate as Patterson if he were to be brought up. They are two different people whose minor league numbers (correct me if I'm wrong) don't particularly mirror each other. Plus, Patterson seems a little mentally frail to me.
  9. I can't think of one. If the Cubs want to get serious about making an impact deal, they have to look at pitching for hitting. If that is the case, you have to consider Z or Prior to move to somewhere like Texas for a package including Teixeira. Or, get really crazy and ship Z to the Yankees with ARam, Remmy and Holla for ARod, Matsui and Gordon (just thinking outside the box). However, that doesn't really fit your criteria of reasonableness (though I tried to be fair to both sides).
  10. Goony just loves Henry Blanco and wants to see him get more playing time.
  11. My money is on, "VERBOTEN!"
  12. Paraphrasing: Pat Hughes after the game last night, "I know that this is portion is known as the highlight show, but I honestly can't think of one play in which a Cub player distinguished himself." Ron Santo after the game, "This team just can't do it. Jim Hendry has to do something drastic, maybe blow it up."
  13. I'm less and less inclined to believe this aspect of the Baker mythos. The second part, I've got no qualms with.
  14. Does anyone else see the irony that this losing streak has come on the heels of getting almost completely healthy? A tumbling team, a grumpy manager, and little help on the horizon will make for a long second half.
  15. Gamecast makes it look like Wood is all over the place.
  16. He CAN be sent down. All he has to do is clear Major League (revocable) waivers which is pretty much a formality. No GM in his right mind would claim a player off of those since he would expose himself to retaliation from other GM's, plus it's a common practice done by every team. At some point in the season pretty much every player goes on major league waivers. I don't think many GM's would hesitate to claim Corey off the waiver wire. In addition, I disagree that it is a practice that is commonly done (to send out of option players to the minors, that is). Large numbers of players are sent through waivers following the trade deadline so that GMs will know whether they are available later. Those players often are expensive, have long term contracts and/or are underperforming. With Corey's salary and talent (though untapped), I highly doubt he'd make it through waivers. When Kevin Millar was involved in that waiver flap, my understanding was that it was a special situation. The Marlins had a deal to ship him to Japan and, generally speaking, other ML teams don't screw players under those circumstances. But, Epstein being an unconventional GM made the claim.
  17. You've got to be freaking kidding me.
  18. Holy Crap. Not remotely justifying Kenny's actions, but that butt weasel of a camera man looks and talks like a typical money grubbing plaintiff. He's you client isn't he? I don't do plaintiffs' work.
  19. LOL! Sportsline made the homerun sound and everything. Hold it. Thats not funny...

  21. Baseball malpractice is what it is. With all due respect to people that say Dusty is even an average manager, his continued lineups of this nature say otherwise. It may be one small aspect of the game, but it is a hugely significant one. He has wasted three months of the most potent bat in the league. Does that sound like something an average manager would do? so it would be the equivalent of Bobby Knight having Scott May play point guard? Yeah that's average. I have no idea what you are trying to say here.
  22. Farnsworth has been maddeningly inconsistent, but this season he's been far better than any of our relievers. Baseball Prospectus has his VORP at 12.2. Dempster is the highest rated Cub reliever at 8.0. Kent Mercker is at 8.7, by the way. Mercker is easily the best pitcher on that Cincinnati staff.
