  1. Plea bargain. Play for the Cubs for the league minimum.
  2. Sun-Times says he signed for 725 K plus a possible 300K in incentives based on games played. I thought 500 K was bad. 725K !!! Who were they bidding against?
  3. Bako's are more balanced player than Blanco. Hes equally bad offensively and defensively.
  4. No money, they're saving to sign Bako
  5. Dodger fans must consider themselves very lucky to have a veteran baseball man like Ned Colletti making the decisions.
  6. How about Pie's numbers ? .275/.323/.434 13 HR 60 RBI and 19 SB Also, Fan Graphs has Bradley's production in '08 being worth $16.9 mil. And yes, of course these numbers are sscewed due to Bradley hitting in a big hitters parking while DHing full-time. He could still reach these numbers, though. Thanks. I saw them somewhere the other day but couldn't remember them. Those are pretty decent considering it would be his first full season and the great defense he'd provide. Its a shame he probably won't get the chance here.
  7. How can they take away the opportunity to hear him cry about Froemmings ball four call one more time?
  8. Miles is a definite downgrade and the return suggests the trade was a salary dump.
  9. I see why you are having such a tough time grasping this. YOU are the one that's NUTS! It is BOSTON that is desperate, not the Cubs! The Cubs would be dealing from a position of strength, and regardless wouldn't be putting Soto or any regular, other than Soriano, in such a package. Most teams wouldn't be willing to give up such an offensive threat, and that makes a deal for Soriano even more attractive. Remember, I didn't say this was GOING to happen, only that it might. But if the Red Sox were indeed willing to see Beltran as a real offensive threat, how much more valuable would Soriano be to them? Why would Boston (or anyone) consider Soriano more valuable than Beltran?
  10. It must be his .330 lifetime obp that makes him such a good fit.
  11. Miles has been averaging about 400 at bats a year for the last 5. 20 doubles is his career high. DeRosa had 40 in 2006 with the Rangers. People are suggesting that DeRosa will have a dropoff because of his age,DeRosa was born Feb. 1975 Miles Dec. 1976.
  12. Bradley hurting himself arguing with the umpire makes me wonder what kind of shape hes in. He was a DH for most of the year. With the money he'll be bringing in I hope he will step up his conditioning and flexibility. Some teams would demand it. The impression I get (mainly from the way they handle Soriano) is that the Cubs wouldn't.
  13. There has seemed to be too many times when Lou would use 3 guys in the eighth. That's why they carry 12-13 pitchers. I'm not even referring to times when a guys getting hit. I'm talking about when a righty comes in faces one guy, gets him out and gets pulled for another righty.
  14. I know Dunn can hit with power, but playing right field shouldn't even be considered. When they signed Soriano and said he would play center,I felt he would be a better in right because of his arm and speed. Pie was a year or two away and was the centerfielder of the future. If they moved him there, then they could sign Dunn to play left. Watching Soriano track balls in left, right would probably be an adventure too. Fukudome/Johnson in center with Bradley in right is ok. When Bradley gets hurt it becomes Gathright/Johnson in center with Hoffpauir/Fukodome in right. Fukodome would actually face the leftys. His splits against leftys were pretty decent. Unless they have a right handed bat to play right. (Please not Aaron Miles) I'd rather have Pie than Gathright but I doubt he'll be with them by opening day. Actually I expect Fukodome to rebound next year.
  15. During one of Hendry's most recent interviews he stated Marshall as one of the bullpen arms. Someone's got to be the 5th starter. If it's not Marshall, then one of Samardzija, Gaudin, Hart, Wells, etc. will be the guy unless another starter is that next move. Last year they talked about Samardzija being a starter down the line. Gaudin has experience starting too. With the lack of leftys and a Marshalls ability to be a swing man, hes needed in the pen.

  17. How does the ability to play multiple positions poorly help the team? Most teams that pickup utility players actually find players with plus gloves. Miles best fielding position is 2B and hes average at best fielding there. Weak hitting, slow baserunning, and poor fielding come to mind. When they signed him I didn't think it was too bad but the more I look the less there is to like. A guaranteed second year ,that makes it look even worse. The Cards did the same thing with him contract wise last year and signed him later. They've seen him everyday for a few years and didn't see the need to get him signed.
  18. Could this comment have possibly been more unnecessary? It says that the compensation that they would receive for DeRosa leaving as a free agent is worth more than the bucket of balls they received.
  19. They would probably want to add at the deadline also. I can't believe asking for a budget increase by the new owners is being considered.
  20. So far... Gregg< Wood Bako< Blanco Fontenot Miles Gathright Fukodome Vizcaino=Howry Bradley>Fukodome (depends how many games he plays though) 5th startervs. Marquis ? They also gave up Ceda and got 3 mediocre prospects. We'll have to see what the get for Pie. Hopefully this evolves into something much better but so far....
  21. Bringing in Lou,Lilly Marquis etc. was a big part also. Carlos Lee at 6/100 would have worked also. Lilly? Yes. Lou? Perhaps. Marquis? No. While Marquis wasn't great,23 wins in two years and taking the ball every fifth day wasn't too bad. The number of starters tried in 2006 made the signing of an inning eater a must.
  22. It came from the DeRosa savings, and they think he can contribute positively. If they were financially strapped, they had no business offering 10m a year for Bradley. How much savings is there from removing Marquis and DeRosa's contract, only to add Bradley, Miles, Gathright and Vizcaino? The Cubs had players to trade to get a lefty bat. Luke Scott, Hermida, Hawpe, Kubel, etc... And they could have made those trades without having to give up DeRosa. Unfortunately it's become painfully obvious they didn't want a lefty bat. They wanted multiple lefty bats at every position. They are going to struggle all year looking for right handed help. Finding another right handed bat will be for next off-season.
