    DeRosa and Marquis in the trade is Hendrys way of making the money fit. They won't pay Wood and Blanco because of money. So,they downgrade with Gregg and possibly Bako. They need money for a RF. Fukodome in center is replacing Edmonds.That seems like a downgrade also. If they weren't concerned with his bat,they wouldn't be considering a platoon. Losing DeRosa would've weakened them also. Dempster is not pitching for a contract, how will he perform next year ? I see bigger concerns. Jake Peavy seems like a luxury to me at this point.

    A top arm for the pen would really help. Is Gregg an upgrade over Wood? Hes more likely an upgrade over Howry. By not making the deal,they can get help in other places. The failure of the Brian Roberts trade helped make the Rich Harden trade.

    Good gravy people. I can understand the disappointment but keep your brains switched on here. Dempster or no Dempster, Towers was asking too much. It's that simple. In fact he probably would've asked for even more if Dempster had walked. The Cubs would've been more needy of his asset then. Hendry felt he'd be able to make the $$$ work even with Dempster, or else this thing never would've gotten this far. In order to make the money work,he would have had to give up DeRosa and pay most of Marquis' salary.

    The 4/52 they gave Dempster has affected this. The money wouldn't have been an issue with Peavy without the Dempster signing. They could have let Dempster go ,get the draft picks,and had money for the Peavy trade and probably sign Bradley.

    Charlie Finley used to say give me 25 guys with one year contracts and we'll win the pennant(something like that) Would Dempster be a free agent in which we would get a first rounder and a supplemental ?

    I was kinda hoping they would start him instead of Harden.Hes been pitching well.Harden could have gotten a few extra days off. I've also been hoping that Marshall would replace Marquis but.....

    Lately hes been the one who can't get out of the particular inning....

    That scouting report sounds a few weeks old, when he had control problems. I believe his problems are from overuse. My previous post made mention on Piniella bringing him into games with 6 run leads. This wasn't being done to get him work because he hadn't pitched in awhile,but to win now. He has 50 appearances! Piniella made it sound like Marmol booting the ball caused everything yesterday. He was struggling before that. Lous been in denial about Marmols overuse for awhile. Hes denied it by pointing out that his velocity is the same. Hes also speculated about tipping his pitches. Marmol needs to go on the DL. He needs rest. I don't believe hes injured,just tired. Sending him to Iowa will have him pitching,not resting. Putting him on the DL will eliminate the temptation to have him pitch his way out of his problems. Being named an all-star makes things worse. Piniella said he would defer to Hurdle as far as pitching him.

    Its disturbing that Marmol gets brought into a game when they're up 6 runs in the 8th. Tonight wasn't the first time. Lou gets a free ride where Dusty would have been nailed for it.They carrying what,12 pitchers? If theres a pitcher in the pen they can't bring in that situation,they don't belong on the team,or in the majors.

    "Don't blame me. I went by the book" and "gut instinct " are both excuses. Johnny B. feels ones more acceptable than the other.

    Well said. Marmol saved many games last year in the 7th. He came in and got out of jams enabling Dempster to get mop up saves. The closer title is often overrated. If their roles were switched last year, would Marmol have had as many save opportunities ?

    A base clogger would be the guy who drew the 2 out walk with runners on to bring Jacque Jones or Corey Patterson to the plate to face a lefty.

    Sometimes the best trades are the ones that are not made. The price seems why too high and we seem to be trying to outbid ourselves. Mc Phail knows that when Hendry sets his mind on acquiring a player hes willing to overpay.

    McPhails trying to trade Roberts to open up a spot for Freddie.

    Arod. I don't believe Sorianos production was worth his contract .Hes not gonna get too much better either. It sounds like hes getting the credit for the team reaching the playoffs. You have to wonder who would have taken his place.Theriot would be in the leadoff spot and they would have added another outfielder.

    Blanco over Kendall. Hes been there twice and is much better defensively.

    So you want Dempster going 2 innings last night in a tie game and Marmol coming in to face the 9-1-2 hitters with a 2 run lead? Does anybody really want to see Dempster with the game on the line? Lous been bringing Marmol in crucial situations. Coming in the 9th with no runners on with a lead is alot easier than coming in with runners on in a tie game in the 7th or 8th. Its risky bringing Dempster in with runners on because he walks too many.

    I believe right now the staff is only 11. And Lilly threw 107. A few weeks ago

    With all the moves,its hard to keep track. Factoring in Gallagher,Petrick,Pignatiello etc.there are plenty of fresh arms available.Of course you want at least 6 from your starter,but if his(Lilly)pitch counts that high,pull him.Its August,we need to have these guys in October.

    Lou seems to have some Dusty in him. Lilly throwing 127 pitches was silly.They have a 12 man staff to ease the workload but...

    DFA Hill or Kendall ? Hill isn't good either. I really don't think they would DFA Kendall a week after trading for him. Thus, goodbye Koyie. At least Hill can catch.
