  1. I don't know, man. Three straight Gold Gloves in CF and a solid bat in which you could pretty much count on 100 runs, 30 HR and 80+ RBI in this Cub lineup - not to mention his whole career ahead of him. He'd probably come cheaper than Andruw Jones too. With the instability in positions the Cubs have (Soriano, SS, 2B) in key defensive positions, Vernon Wells would greatly improve this team for years to come.
  2. I think the Cubs would be better off finding a way to pry Vernon Wells from Toronto and going with Izturis/Cedeno at Shortstop than trying to get Tejada. Overall better defense, and a comperable bat. RF Soriano LF Murton 1B Lee 3B Ramirez CF Wells CA Barrett 2B DeRosa SS Izturis/Cedeno
  3. Randall Simon is NOT the real "Sausage King of Chicago."
  4. "Greg Maddux reportedly signs with NY Yankees."
  5. Yeah, Billy "F Face" Ripken just broke on XM 175 that "it says on my ticker that Jason Schmidt was offered a 3 year/$44 million contract by the Chicago Cubs." I hope they do something to kinda improve the credibility. Just announced it on XM 175 "updates." NSBB is still the best place to get legit Cub news I can find.
  6. There is an inherent danger involved in drawing statistical inferences from limited sample sizes. Case in point...... Cedeno's performace in 2005. I'd imagine you were equally impressed by that limited sample size, too, eh? Actually, I was a little. His 2006 performance pretty much took care of that, though.
  7. I wonder if Hendry is going to try and pull off a trade for Dontrelle Willis. That would be nice. Concerning Zito, is he a flyball pitcher? What is the reason (besides the incredible rumor of what he is asking) Schmidt is so preferred over Zito? Zito's numbers look a bit better to me.
  8. Now just what is it about this 2005 line that makes you conclude Theriot's a tough out ?? 04/04 - 10/02 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS Theriot 13 3 2 1 0 0 3 0 1 2 0.154 0.214 0.231 0.445 I actually remember a few of Theriot's at bats in that vast amount of plate appearances. Yeah the numbers kinda stink - but you do know that you can have a good at bat without getting on base, right? But your assertion was not that he was a good bat, but rather that he "showed to be a tough out", no? Sort of both. My point was that Theriot may have been 2 for 13 or whatever, but some of his at-bats, if I remember correctly, were nice battles. But whatever - I think his 150-something at bats were a much better indicator of what he can do than those 13 the year before. I have been impressed with Theriot, but that's just me.

  10. I don't really put much stock in liking/disliking a player because of steroid allegations. If they are found guilty, like Bonds, Giambi, Palmeiro - it affects my respect for them. I think Sammy's problem is that he was exposed as a pompous prima-donna who was not a good clubhouse presence. How would we, as fans, really ever know what goes on in the clubhouse? If Sammy had a problem with Dusty Baker - that's fine. I still love Sammy Sosa for what he has done - which is bring great joy to Cub fans for 13 years. The rapid drop in production did suck, and his ugly departure was the worst - but if Sammy would have a slice of humble pie and do something to prove to us that he doesn't feel he is owed the "Cub fans love/respect" on a silver platter, I think it would help the situation.
  11. Is it really fair to assume that Theriot is going to fail like Spencer, Perez, Kevin Maas, or even Jerome Walton? Sometimes, players actually succeed - kinda like Theriot did in 2006 for the Cubs. Should his success surprise us? A pleasant surprise, yes - but we shouldn't be shocked. The only shocking thing about Theriot's performance were the 3 home runs, which were way more than you could have projected for him in 150 at bats. My point is that Theriot has a plan at the plate which is obvious. He is not an easy out, and pitchers are going to have to work to get him out. I find that as a bigger asset than say Ronny Cedeno's lack of production. Theriot is not a free swinger who gets schooled every time he steps up to the plate. He is a player that has actually developed favorably in the Cubs system - and I think he is very possibly a guy who can handle the bat in the 2 hole and score some runs for the Cubs. Since we have DeRosa, who is more accomplished and probably a better overall player - we don't need Theriot at 2B. Since we have Izturis at SS, I think he is better for the team since SS is a defensive position FIRST. If Theriot can play a good SS, I'd like to see him get a shot - but what do the scouting reports say about him at SS?
  12. Ronny Cedeno was available yesterday - but I'm not sure I want to touch that. Sammy Sosa is available for only $245.
  13. seconded I disagree that it was enough time to prove it wasn't a fluke. Players have fluke seasons, Theriot easily could have had a fluke 150 ABs. I'd say the chances it was a fluke are much higher than the chances that that is his real skill level. He might be able to produce something, but the Cubs shouldn't count on him like they did Cedeno last year. Theriot obviously overacheived with the Cubs in 2006. Regardless, his pattern of hitting since he abandoned switch-hitting has been consistant: he knows how to get on base, and what to do on the basepaths. Even when he was up with the Cubs in prior stints - he showed to be a tough out. Mind you, it really seemed like Dusty Baker was trying to give Theriot the chance to fail, instead of succeed. What I mean is Dusty was trying his damnedest to give 2nd Base to Freddie Bynum - but Theriot just came on so strong that even that idiotic platoon had to be squashed. I just feel that Theriot has arrived. I wasn't real excited about the DeRosa signing (though I'm really glad to have him) because he was filling a position that was almost earned by an actual Cub prospect. I think Theriot is much better a 2nd Baseman than a Shortstop, but I'd like to see him playing until he loses the job. At least.
  14. I would like to see Theriot win a spot and prosper. He showed last season, in which he got enough time to prove he wasn't really a fluke, that his approach to hitting only got better the higher level he played. Though he has zero power, Ryan Theriot is a disciplined hitter who is a tough out and knows how to get on base. The fact that he is a good baserunner (despite a couple of pretty reckless mistakes) with decent speed doesn't hurt. I think the money, if a factor, should be spent elsewhere - like starting pitching and another OFer with some pop. I think Theriot would make a hell of a #2 hitter behind Soriano.
  15. Murton doesn't have the arm for RF.
  16. Those statistics aren't very important at all, especially RBI and R which are almost completely worthless. SB has some value, but Soriano gets himself out on the bases so much that he doesn't exactly provide a ton of value with his baserunning. You are so right.
  17. You think Hawpe's a better player than Soriano? Yes. Wow, I mean Hawpe is a very nice player but I personally dont think he is on Soriano's level. I think it is quite obvious that you dont really like the signing of Soriano, but dont let that cloud your judgment. If you are going the route of production vs. price, then I can see your point, otherwise I would have to disagree. But I would love to hear why you came to that conclusion. Hawpe in 2006: .293/.383/.515/.898 Soriano in 2006: .277/.351/.560/.911 Soriano has only put up Hawpe's OPS once in his career. And Hawpe is 3.5 years younger with just two full major league seasons under his belt. I do think it is really possible that Hawpe is going to bloom into an All-Star player, but you have to look at important statistics like runs scored, RBI, SB, and HR. Hawpe is going to have to really step it up to get on those elite levels that Soriano eclipses on a yearly basis.
  18. IMO, Brad Hawpe is a much better candidate for #5 hitter than Jones. I can't imagine any team that would rather have Jacque Jones over Brad Hawpe. He is a doubles machine, and is going to be a SOLID hitter (already is).
  19. Hawpe is the guy who hit the line drive off of Prior's arm. He also was Ryan Theriot's teammate at LSU, in which he hit 2 HR off of Prior in the 2000 CWS. That was sweet.
  20. I still love my Grace jersey. For some reason, I have a Baker jersey that I got for cheap on Ebay back in early 04. What the hell am I supposed to do with that piece of garbage?
  21. I love the matchup of Carlos Zambrano against Carlos Lee. It is always interesting.
  22. I am in your camp. He seems like a self-worshipper.
