  1. I'm sure I am not the only one who is always excited during the Cub off season. This one has been pretty good - if you look at how much money was spent. I can honestly say that I was more excited about the Maddux acquisition after the 2003 season than the Soriano one this off season. At the time, Maddux rounded off what should have been the best pitching rotation in the game. There is always reason for optimism.
  2. I have trouble with that. But I don't think it is fair of me to debate it - because I fell in love with baseball and the Cubs in the summer of 89. I did not witness Dawson's playing days in Montreal, but I definately recognized the name when I really got into baseball.
  3. I clearly remember Dempster showing up to Spring Training in pretty bad shape last year. Perhaps the contract took away his hunger, no pun intended.
  4. Jim Rice had some real nice years, but he wasn't the defensive player or baserunner that Dawson was. 16 real good years for Rice, but I think it is a different arguement. I think Rice was a better pure hitter, but Dawson was an overall better player.
  5. Freddie Benevides was money.
  6. I can remember being shocked, yet laughing - because that was very unlike Dawson.
  7. Andre Dawson is HOF worthy - and I do not see where the great debate is. Outside of statistics, Dawson was one of the best players of his time. He was a class act, and respected by everyone that I know about. Statistically: * 1977 NL Rookie of the Year. * 1987 NL MVP (on a last place team, which is notable, twice finishing 2nd). * 8 time All-Star. * 8 time Gold Glove winner (6 years in a row - 1980-1985, 87 & 88). * 4 Silver Slugger Awards. * 2774 career hits (#45 ALL TIME). * 1373 career runs (#85 ALL TIME). * 4787 career total bases (#24 ALL TIME). * 503 career doubles (#42 ALL TIME). * 438 career HR (#35 ALL TIME). * 1591 career RBI (#29 ALL TIME). * 314 career SB. * 1039 career extra base hits (#22 ALL TIME). * 118 career sacrifice flies (#9 ALL TIME). * 365.8 career Power/Speed rating (#6 ALL TIME). When you consider ALL of the players honored with induction into the HOF, and recognize that Andre Dawson is amoung the top 35 ALL TIME in categories such as HR, RBI, total bases, xtra base hits, and lump in his 8 Gold Gloves, 8 All-Star appearances - I just don't see where the arguement is, and why Dawson is not already in the HOF.
  8. I hope this works out.
  9. This is one of the best mental images of baseball I've had all offseason. Wrigley during this would rival Dodger Stadium in Gagné's heyday. No Metallica/AC-DC theme song needed, just the place going nuts. I believe Kerry is on record as being a big metalhead. So his theme music should be....?? "Balls to the Wall". I'm thinking "Harvester of Sorrow."
  10. I think DeRosa is a nice player, and it is obvious that he will be playing a lot more than the above lineup would suggest. He will surely be the starting Second Baseman for the Cubs - I just am a Theriot fan, and would love to see him work out at 2B. DeRosa is so versitile that he could play so many positions and still get 300+ ABs without being a starter. I don't think that Theriot would be a upper level defender at SS, and I like Izturis there - as long as the Cubs are fielding enough offense to be able to afford him in the 8 spot. I could see a rotation of Theriot/Izturis at SS, Theriot/DeRosa at 2B, and DeRosa/Murton/Jones in the OF.
  11. I think we're all pretty sure Sammy juiced...
  12. I doubt Tampa Bay will be in need of any help at 3B with Evan Longoria ripping up the Minor Leagues last summer. That is pretty much based on Felix Pie's entire professional career. The kid has ALL the tools, but little plate discipline. He is not ready to hit in the Major Leagues now, and likely won't be ready for at least another year. SO, let him develope in AA and AAA next year, with a cup of coffee - then see how he can learn to turn around the BB/K ratio a little bit. That being said, I am sure he will probably play at least half the season in Chicago in 2007 - but I think it is obvious that Pie has some maturing to do with the bat.
  13. Andruw Jones is a PERFECT fit for us. Jacque Jones will be finishing up his contract about the time Pie is ready.
  14. That's pretty good stuff.
  15. It is without question that Alfonso Soriano is going to be hitting leadoff for the Cubs in 2007, evident by the comments by GM Jim Hendry and Manager Lou Piniella. You can't help but wonder if the lineup would be better served with Soriano, one of the games best combinations of speed and power, hitting in the middle of the order. As it stands today, the Cubs are lacking a true #5 hitter - just like before the 2006 season. Just for the sake of discussion, explain why Soriano belongs at the top of the order - or why he belongs in the middle. I would be interested to see Soriano hitting 5th. I think it is rather odd that he walked 67 times in 2006 (51 + 16 intentional), and wonder if he actually became a bit more selective at the plate. His career high 160 K's wouldn't suggest that, but it is an interesting statistic. The Cubs actually have options for 2007 in the leadoff spot - and Ryan Theriot could very well get some significant time at SS and 2B. He has shown that he has plate discipline, good baserunning skills, little power, and a knack for getting on base. The Cubs could use him at the top 2 in the order. I think this lineup looks a lot more balanced: 2B/SS Theriot LF Murton 1B Lee 3B Ramirez RF Soriano CF Jones CA Barrett SS/2B Izturis/DeRosa
  16. I think perhaps MCCARTHY had a lot to do with the success the White Sox had in 2005. His emergence in Spring Training meant Jon Garland HAD to step up, or lose his job in the rotation. Garland indeed did finally produce, in order to survive - and maybe that wouldn't have happened if McCarthy hadn't been challenging him for a spot. The whole staff pitched more effectively. The Sox dominated that year with pitching and defense.
  17. LSU 34 - Notre Dame 17
  18. Not going to happen. You may be right. I know a few pretty interesting things that have happened behind the scenes, so McCarthy getting traded away for nearly nothing does not surprise me at all. He is a solid guy, much wiser and mature than his age. I think McCarthy is going to be good. I wish he were a Cub.
  19. I like the Haterade. Replenishes the electrolytes and stuff.
  20. Griff is a 1st ballot HOFer. No doubt.
  21. Good news for us. Suddenly, the Reds could REALLY use Jacque Jones. The signing of Jeff Conine is not going to fill Jr.s shoes....
  22. I have been warming up to the idea of Soriano leading off, because it looks like that is set in stone. But I can't help but wonder if with what the Cubs have NOW, would the lineup be better with Soriano in the middle? As it stands, we have one of the games best power hitters batting leadoff, and still lack a legit #5 hitter. I am a big fan of OB%, and I have faith in Ryan Theriot and Matt Murton - because both already possess plate discipline. I just see the Cubs scoring more runs with this lineup: 2B Theriot LF Murton 1B Lee 3B Ramirez RF Soriano CF Jones CA Barrett SS Izturis That really is a solid lineup, IMO. Then again, I am not Lou Piniella, and this is his ship. DeRosa could play here and there and give just about everyone a break (but they DID invest $$$ in him, so none of my scenario really makes sense). BUT, you wanted my opinion - so there it is.
  23. I would LOVE to see Sosa attempt a comeback with the Cubs. We could use a Sammy who is somewhat productive. But let's be real, folks. This IS NOT going to happen. There is a different side of the card that WE don't see, and I have a feeling that Sosa/Cubs relationship is not a pretty thing.
  24. I'll bet Wood will be throwing a LOT more fastballs as a reliever, especially as a closer. I'm thinking that will be better for his arm anyway. Dude has a dirty fastball, and it was obvious that when he was just trying to get outs as a reliever, he was just blowing it by people. I wish it would have worked out for him as a starter, but I can't wait to see what he can do as a reliever (closer).
