  1. One of the biggest shames in baseball is the relationship between Sammy Sosa and the Chicago Cubs (fans). Sosa has gone from hero to zero in a very short time, and for good reasons. What would it take for Sammy and the Cubs to patch things up and for him to be beloved by the Cub fans again? What would it take to right the ship?
  2. As it stands, Greg Maddux would improve this team. I'll take Maddux for 2 years/ 13 million.
  3. CF is probably the most demanding of the OF positions. You have to cover both gaps, and make good jumps/routes to balls. Not sure if it is easier or harder, just a lot different from LF or RF. I would definately say that playing an OF position has unique skill demands from the other positions. I would say CF is the most difficult or demanding.
  4. RF Soriano LF Murton 1B Lee 3B Ramirez 2B DeRosa CF Jones CA Barrett SS Izturis Pitcher
  5. Webb: 1-4, 3K Smoltz: 5-17, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2K Zambrano: 0-4, 3K http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6154/batvspit;_ylt=AngfrFxtD8dfTTwrysS6b3eFCLcF
  6. I think Pie needs at least one more year to learn plate discipline. The guy is no different K/BB wise than Corey Patterson. Sure he is eager for the call-up, but he needs to learn how to hit with plate discipline. Jacque Jones is going to be a lot more valuable than Pie in CF in 2007.
  7. He was just on XM 175. Didn't say too much, but I only caught the last few minutes. He did mention that Piniella never mentioned that he wanted the Cubs to break the bank and spend a lot of money, that it just kinda worked out that way. Still kinda praised Dusty, which was classy. He sounded pretty excited, which he should be.
  8. Pujols struck out 50 times while Howard fanned 181. Pujols has a much better glove, despite missing games due to injury. I could see it going either way. That being said, they will probably award it to Beltran or Reyes.
  9. That is a TOUGH decision. I would lean toward Pujols because of the Cardinals success, but the Phillies were somewhat in it because of Howard. This is a tough one, but what a story it would be if Howard won it in his first complete season. Both are deserving.
  10. I'm not a big fan of hitting Soriano in the top 2 spots. He has too much power, and the Cubs had a glaring hole in the 5 spot (I think Lee should occupy that hole and Soriano in the 3 spot, until Lee is back to old form). Soriano is not an "On Base %" guy, which would be better suited at the top because it = more runs. I think Soriano could work at leadoff (he could work anywhere in the lineup), but he would help the club if he were knocking in runs. I guess the scoop is that he doesn't hit well with RISP, and is more effective leading off - but I haven't seen the splits. Regardless, this is a beautiful lineup IMO: 2B Theriot LF Murton 1B Lee CF Soriano 3B Ramirez RF Jones CA Barrett SS Izturis
  11. Theriot was a pretty good SS in college, but I don't think he is a ML shortstop. He'd probably be OK there for a spell, but I would still like to see what he could do at the top of the order. I like his plate discipline and baserunning. He has shown impovement as he climbed the ladder - and I think he would be a solid contributor if he gets his shot. Plus, it would help the team financially (which is proving to be a moot point) if you could pencil him in at 2B. Doubt that is going to happen now that Derosa has been signed. I am a Theriot fan, but mainly just want a table setter at the top of the Cubs order who can get on base and score.
  12. Matt Murton doesn't have the tools for RF. I still would love to see him set in LF, but not if that means that you can't get Carlos Lee. I hope that they are saving lots of money for starting pitching. How sweet would a Dontrelle Willis trade be?
  13. Trade him and others to Florida for Cabrera. Do you really think that would be a good idea? How long will it be before Cabrera is demanding $20 million/year? Opposed to Pie? I say get someone who can teach Pie some plate discipline, or trade him for a like prospect (pitching).
  14. Does it really give us a better chance to win a world series? I guess that depends on how much money the Cubs REALLY are given to spend. If there is a limit, then yeah - it will hurt us in a few years. I am sure in 5 years I will still be a Cub fan, and hopefully - this contract is not going to be a cinderblock tied to our ankles. Love having Soriano, though. Just this is the money you throw at Beltran a few years ago. I know, I know - Andy Macphail.
  15. Even if the Cubs are not sold, my first thoughts of this contract are that there is a larger chance that this signing hurts the Cubs than helps. Soriano is a great addition, but for that cost? Reckless. If it pays off, great. If it fails, Hendry's gone anyway. Don't get me wrong, I like the addition of Soriano - but the negatives are that he doesn't have a set position, he has been a huge distraction in the past, and he strikes out like it's nobodies business. Yet I remain cautiously optimistic - because I am a Cubs fan.
  16. On the Trib.com it says that Soriano will play CF and lead off. I certainly hope he is not the Cubs leadoff hitter.
  17. I'd rather they did this: 2B Theriot LF Murton CF Soriano 3B Ramirez 1B DLee (until back to form, then swap with Soriano) RF Jones CA Barrett SS Izturis
  18. And I see no way the pitching staff can be any worse. At the least, we probably won't have to start 15 different pitchers or whatever the nuts number was. Didn't you hear? We got Neal Cotts.
  19. The belief is that he's better batting leadoff. We'll see. I like him 5th behind Lee and Ramirez, with Murt hitting 2nd and hopefully Julio Lugo batting 1st at SS (SB Tribune reported today that the Cubs are hot for Lugo). With you there. Soriano is no lead off hitter.
  20. Dude just can't catch a break. Golfclap. I chuckled.
  21. I would much rather the Cubs spent $18million on Durham for 2 years than $13million on Derosa for 3.
  22. I would love to see this, even if the Cubs have to extend his contract a couple years (4 years, $50-60 million). MUCH better deal than Soriano. I would love to see the Cubs snag Julio Lugo. He would be invaluable on this team.
  23. What a shame. Sosa needs medication and a good doctor. I hate this. It really is all about Sammy. Sheesh.
  24. What the hell is this signing? $4.3 million for 3 years for what? A bench player? A second baseman that you don't need? An OFer? Is this the answer to the Cubs OF problems? Last year it was Neifi, Rusch, and Jones. This years "trifecta" is going to be Derosa and who? This makes no sense to me.
