    What a namby pamby something or other. Andy and Hendry have to love that this sort of feeling is still out there. You can blame so many people that you can't blame anybody, that way everybody gets off scott free. Bullhonky! Lots of people screwed up and changes need to be made. Falling back on the "spend more money" line is just a cowardice way out of explaining the problem. Why should spending more money help them if spending as much as they have for many years has left them where they are.

    It's been 263. MLB hit leader Cleveland has 310. #15 Boston has 275. The team one spot in front of them on the hits list, Oakland, has 256. Tampa has 237 and KC has 246.

    A living human being for Jose Macias Alfonseca. Bynum. That worthless Loogy they got from Arizona. The Farnsworth, Sosa, and Patterson trades. The myth that Hendry is King Midas with his trades doesn't really hold up.

    I didn't mean to imply his return would have much impact, but his injury has been mentioned by Hendry as contributing to the team's struggles.... so as soon as everyone gets back, we can watch the team continue to struggle without excuses. You don't think they'll come up with new excuses?

    Agreed. It's against the Trib's management philosophy of paying two people to do one job. And from a business standpoint, the Hendry era has been the most profitable, and the Cubs are a business first. They've fired plenty of management types midseason and kept on paying them. Field managers yes, management no. Ed Lynch?

    Why do people try to say that the focus is too heavily in one direction, and then insist on pointing it entirely in the other direction. The pitching is not the reason they are where they are. It's one of many reasons. The pitching has sucked. Larry hasn't done squat as a pitching coach and Hendry's moves have been bad. Just all the more reason to get rid of all the coaches and management. At some point we have to realize this isn't a team-wide slump.

    I don't see how Womack can possibly be any worse than Neifi/Hairston. Do I like the fact that we're at the point where we're about to call up Tony freakin Womack? No, of course not. But given the circumstances, I don't mind giving him a shot. I'm not saying he'd be any worse. My fear is that he will be better. Let's just say he hits somewhere around his career numbers of .273/.316/.356. Now we all know those numbers are pretty meager. But the Cubs will look at that .273 batting average and think they've found themselves a player. There'd be a real possibility of the Cubs going into next year thinking they've "solved" second base. Even if he is better than Neifi/Hairston, Womack doesn't help them that much in the short run and can only hurt them in the long run. And then he'll get the 2 year $5m contract that Hendry offers standard to any pile of rubbish with quick feet and no bat.

    Met talent? Are you kidding. Look at that 2001 team, the one following the world series. Zeille as the starting 1B, Payton, Agbayani and Perez the starting OF (that's Cubs esque), worthless Rey Ordonez at short. An already in decline Alfonzo. Kevin Appier, Glendon Rusch, Steve Trachsel, Bruce Chen. I think it's a miracle he got them to .500. He won 88, 88, 97 and 94 in his first 4 years, and that was with the pathetic Steve Phillips as GM. He never had a stud pitcher. His best position player was Piazza, whose best days were behind him. Ventura and Alfonzo were probably his 2nd and 3rd best position players while he was there. Valentine managed the pants off of Baker in the 2000 playoffs, watching it game by game was amazing to see how far ahead of Dusty he was. Dusty was getting guys up in the pen way too late, and Valentine exploited every bad move. You rarely see that in baseball.

    HAVE YOU NEVER SEEN A PLAYER PERFORM BETTER IN THEIR PRIME YEARS? EVER? Whiner. Unfortunately, if Albert hits more than about 65 homers, the steroid question is going to be asked, since the other three guys who eclipsed that mark all have serious questions about how they did it. Very true, but since he has been doing things no one has ever done before in his career thus far, I hope more people give him the benefit of the doubt. It's not like this guy was a top of the order table setter who morphed into a beast (Sammy), an injury prone lanky homerun hitter who morphed into a healthy beast of a man (Mac), or a skinny 5 tool player who's head, neck, and chest plumped while he cooked (Bonds). Instead he was a 29 year old undercover cop working in a local high school to flush out drug dealers, then he went dirty and got on the juice and morphed into a 36 year old bald beast of a man.

    As I noted in one of the other threads, I don't see what the big deal would be if they did move him back a day ... which would keep him on the same schedule as he would be on if the Cubs had a bona fide 5th starter. Insisting on going to a 4-man once through the rotation because of the off-day just pushes the day of reckoning back two days to Tuesday. Why not just plan on Wood starting on Monday ... I don't get it. I'm all for pushing him back. They should have done that this time when he wasn't able to do his normal throwing sessions. If he can't throw on his normal throwing day this time, then push him back. No big deal. Pitchers are given an extra day or two all the time.

    Pole is a Dusty man from the start, and I'm pretty sure Gene Clines was a Dusty guy as well. It's not bad luck that the Pierre trade was terrible. Hendry made everybody know he was desperate for a stereotypical leadoff man. Even if Pierre matched his 2005 numbers he'd have been a horrible acquisition. It's not blind luck when a one dimensional offensive player and defensive liability starts to really suck. One dimensional players tend to suck from time to time. It's one thing to sign injured guys, it's another to rely on them as the main men. Hendry was relying on Wood and Prior to be healthy to start the season, and for Miller to fill in later. I liked the Miller signing as insurance, not as the 6th man that was needed to start the season. Nomar could have been signed to a very reasonable contract. Start him out in LF, and have Murton and Jones platoon in RF. You knew Ramirez would have to sit some games. And Nomar would also be helpful if Cedeno had to take a breather. You wouldn't want to rely on him for 162 games at SS, but at a $5-6m base, he would have been a fantastic third bat in the lineup, and you could have found room for him.

    I don't think they would take Pierre, but Jones is a definate possibility. They have been infatuated with Pierre in the past. Johnny Damon To left, Pierre to center. They need to keep Bernie out of the OF at all costs.

    Wood was throwing around 95-96 in his last start. And speculation is he may be bumped from his next start.
