  1. Stats wise, Rodriguez is far superior to Derrek Lee. I'd be willing to bet that a majority of teams would rather have Lee over Alex because of maturity issues. I have a hard time believing DLee is going to draw attention to himself the way ARod does - and that could be pretty much an intangible asset to a clubhouse. ARod draws attention to himself? You think he does that more than a guy like Jeter? ARod draws a lot less attention to himself than many big name players. If anything, he's more of a recluse than most. It's not like he's Barry Bonds with his own reality show.
  2. I have a pretty big hangup with Schmidt and health issues. It seems every year he's flirting with disaster with some sort of arm issue, even though he has thrown 200+ 3 of the past 5 years. But he did miss starts in 2005, 2000 and 2001. In fact, up until 2003 he was a major question mark as far as IP/performance was concerned. Compare Schmidt to a guy like Mussina, who threw 200+ for 6 straight years before signing with the Yankees, and consistently putting up very solid ERA+ numbers during that time. Things started out great for Mussina in NY, but the past few years he's been pretty inconsistent, and has failed to put up 200 innings for 3 straight years. Schmidt didn't start putting up great ERA+ numbers until 2003. And he'll start his new contract 2 years older than Mussina started his deal with NY, without the stable history. I'm sure he'll have at least 1, and probably 2 great years if he signs a 4-year deal. But I think he's going to be a huge risk for both uneven performance, and large amounts of games missed. I just can't get over my hangup with Schmidt's inconsistently and health concerns. I'll be thrilled if the Cubs sign him (which I'm sure they won't), but something tells me we're going to go through a lot of ups and downs if he comes here.
  3. Maybe not a free pass, but I'll say a cheap pass. He was hammered, but it was quick and mostly painless. As soon as he produced for the Yanks all was forgiven.
  4. I agree, I was just quoting your quote of him so I wouldn't have to go back a page.
  5. I don't see how the NFL isn't intense. If you're capable of watching a 162 game MLB season when the best teams lose 60 times, I think you can find the intensity after a team loses a game. Homefield advantage is still important. And besides, there's only about 2 intense games per team in college, the rest are cakewalks.
  6. Yepper. Hendry can overspend by millions on guys like Alfonseca, Rusch and Perez, he can overspend a couple million on somebody who will actually help the team. Can he? He's never proven that to be the case... Well, I'm saying I'll allow it, not that he's mentally capable. :D
  7. The only plus for this team would be winning in the playoffs, and that did nothing to help them win in the playoffs.
  8. Why? Cause he was a hell of a hard worker, and pretty good on the basepaths from what I remember. I think he'd be a good 1st or 3rd base coach. And he's a pretty vibrant guy, and I like having coaches that are likeable. Why not? Well, he sucked, had a horrible approach, and there's no evidence whatsoever that he has any qualifications to coach. Perfect example of a crappy hustler by the way. Ramirez jogging is 800 times better than Dunston running out another ground ball out. Boy, for someone who's a NSBB Hall of Famer, you sure have a nice attitude. :? And what's the attitude you don't like? The fact that I'm not enamored with bringing back failed ex-Cubs to coach this team? The fact that I'm not enamored with mediocrity or nostalgia for a team that has been nothing but terrible for most of my life? The fact that I actually what the Cubs to hire the best people and find the most productive players they can, regardless of past affiliation to the team? You don't like that attitude?

  10. We have enough money to improve both offensively and defensively, and to your point there aren't the pitchers out there to become an elite staff only. The best course of action would be to become better in both areas, and make sure you are balanced. Resigning Ramirez, signing Soriano and exploring a trade for a better CF or RF isone way to make your offense better. Pitchingwise, Zito and Schmidt aren't the end all, be all, but you can still get one of them, and combined with the above offense moves improve dramatically without busting the budget. Who said elite? The Cubs should be a top 5 run scoring team and top 5 run preventing team in the NL every year. It's not smart to try and just build around pitching. If your pitching falters, you are screwed. Pitching is less reliable anyway. Great pitchers go down or disappoint with far more regularity than great hitters. Improve the offense, improve the pitching. Try to avoid pathetic defenders, but don't focus on improving the defense.
  11. Clemens played for the Yankees and Red Sox. In the national media's mind, no player from either of those teams could ever do any wrong. Look at the free pass Giambi, a confessed steroid user, and Sheffield got from the leaked grand jury testimony. Giambi got a free pass? Compared to every other roid boy. He went through a rough couple months, but has been completely forgiven as soon as he started producing again.
  12. At least somebody who has done that somewhere else. And preferably somebody who can teach something else, like help with the hitters or fielding practice. I doubt Dunston can teach any pro ballplayers much of anything.
  13. What does it matter what Lee is getting? Ramirez has been more productive than Lee for most of the time the two have been here.

  15. Yeah, last year. It's usually not like that. It's usually 2 1 loss teams or 1 undefeated and 1 1 loss. And again, which 1 loss team is determined by polls.
  16. I'm not afraid tro brush it aside. When players talk about liking coaches and not wanting to see them go, I assume it's either PC "don't burn fences" stuff or I'm comfortable doing what we did to bring about 95 losses and don't want change.
  17. Why in the world do you think it's a good idea to just put a bunch of ex-Cubs with no coaching experience on the staff? I don't get the love for guys who have been a part of the losing past?
  18. George Washington, about 15 million of them per year, gives the Cubs the best chance of keeping Aramis. Will the Cubs go that high? Don't know. Both sides might settle at $13.5 million plus incentives, e.g. groundballs run out. :D $15m huh. I was hoping earlier in the year they could settle on $12-13m, possibly touching $15 in the 4th or 5th year. But I always thought it was the guaranteed years that were the biggest issue. The Cubs seem to have a hangup about guaranteeing years, do you think there's any chance the departure of Andy will change this philosophy.
  19. worst run-down ever. Pujols looked like a lumbering fool there.
  20. While that may be true at the professional level, as a coach it kills me to read a statement like that. That's funny, because I know quite a few football coaches who always talk about wanting the talented kid as opposed to the hustling grinder type. It's obligatory to praise the hustling grinder, but I think a lot of coaches would love the opportunity to coach a phenomenal talent, even if he has some hustle issues. And as bad as some want to paint the picture, Aramis isn't that bad in this department. It's not like he never walks, or never dives for balls and never hustles. He flakes from time to time, but not to the extent of Manny. Baseball isn't a balls out sport, you have to be calm and collected. No doubt, every coach wants the D1 stud on their high school team. But you have to set the standard for high school kids, and the kids with that type of talent we've had couldn't stick on the team because of attitude. That hurt us in the short run, but the culture we've established is changing the tone of the program and most importantly, is leading to the development of some fine young men. I'm all about instilling discipline and hustle in high school players. It's very important. I'm not pro-lazy or anything, unless it's my own laziness.
  21. The funny thing is I have the volume very low, and the only stuff I was hearing was Miller's over excitement and the Yankee hype.

  23. Pretty pathetic that the supposedly objective Announcers are pulling for the Yankees or it was Miller' attempt at Post Season drama. They were stroking the Yanks all game long. They are so fixated on the aura of that franchise and how great it is that anything less than a WS championship is considered a failure.
  24. My mouth has a beer game, I'm going to miss it.
