  1. There's a lot of things that GMs do, and would do, that I would never do. It would not surprise me at all if somebody traded for Dempster.
  2. It might point towards a Cubs team that is poised to collect as many veterans as possible to fill holes this year. A lot of people use winning as a euphemism for more 35 year olds on the bench.
  3. Any particular names? We all know my fixation for Dierker. I'd like to see Washington get interviewed. I really don't know if he'd be better, but I think he would be a decent candidate. Mills also is a lesser known but might make a good candidate. By the way, I was kidding.
  4. Points to the good decisions of concentrating on DBs in the draft.
  5. Any particular names?
  6. All this "right guy" talk is really disheartening when you think about how much more important the players are than the manager. It's disturbing to me that Hendry apparantly thinks the right manager is the difference between whether the Cubs win or lose next year, when in fact, it's the players that matter. Focus on players Jim!
  7. That's an interesting claim.
  8. Not true. You don't necessarily get outpitched if you lose. It's relative to the lineup you are facing. If two similar pitching staffs face each other, and one team has a great lineup and the other has a mediocre lineup. The team facing the great lineup might actually outpitch the other team, and still lose. Likewise, if you give up a couple seeing eye singles, and the other guy gives up a bunch of line shots right at guys, you might lose after having outpitched the opposition. A win and a loss does not mean outpitch.
  9. What are we waiting for?! I think we're waiting on Bochy. My guess is that Bochy is Hendry's primary target and Girardi is the fallback option. I think he's waiting on the Yankees/Piniella situation as well as Bochy. Just like everything else, Hendry is reactive to every other team's moves. He never goes out and gets people, he waits for them to come to him.
  10. They are actually giving the Bears a great deal of credit with this statement. They are assuming the Bears will continue to be dominant, and the Rams will start to fall off. I realize this, but I still have a problem with it. They were including this game with a list of games against 2 crap teams who have looked awful. If this was an undefeated Giants team with similar stats to the Bears going against the same Rams, they wouldn't include that on the list, because they would consider such a Giants team as must-see (and I'm talking nationally by the way, they always talk about national ratings). They just don't respect the Bears much. They believe they'll lose 2 of the East Coast games and that the team is overrated due to its soft schedule.
  11. No clue really. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was a shakeup in the Yankees coaching staff, and Joe targeted some of those guys.
  12. The theory in NY was Joe or Alex. If Lou came on board Alex it would be in part, to get the most out of Alex.
  13. Theisman has been a big Bears supporter for the past several years, probably more than any other national voice.
  14. I don't care about the skeletons, nor do I care about the good share of decent players. I care about the abysmal record and 20th century mindset.
  15. Depends on how bad you think he's made out to be. Career OPS+ of 86. It's been at 84 and 81 the past two years. He was at 98 and 107 in 2003 and 2004. He's a significantly below average player, most compared to Willie Wilson. Yet he's already paid significantly more than the average player, and is in-line to make a truckload more than the average player. And that's all because some baseball dinosaurs think leadoff is a position. I think he's a tolerable $2m 8 hitter on a quality team. But he's an awful leadoff hitter and terrible option for a long term contract.
  16. Now they are blasting PTI for having the Bears as their lead story, because, it's a "Yankee day, nationally, it's a Yankee day everywhere".
  17. I had the field over the Yankees from the get-go.
  18. One other thing, they see the Cubs job as the only viable option for Torre if he goes somewhere else, due to the potential for unmatched glory with a WS win.
  19. Correct, I'm thinking a stopgap type in center, maybe a guy like Cruz Jr. or somebody they can get for $2-4m.
  20. I could root for the Mets, because they are a team built on great offense and good pitching. They didn't put all their eggs in the pitching basket. If they win, Hendry might put some value in actually having a lineup that can score runs. More likely, Hendry will credit all the Latinos for them winning and bring back Neifi Perez and Jose Macias, sign Pedro Feliz, and acquire Ramon Ortiz and Esteban Loaiza for the pitching staff. Well, that will just hasten the Hendry exit, which would ultimately be a good thing.
  21. It's a crap shoot about which power pitchers, efficient defenders and great closers will show up in the playoffs.
  22. Speaking of this show (why am I listening to it?), they make a big deal about tv ratings for different games, and were just going through the list of what are now going to be stinkers later in the year, including Miami/Detroit on TDay and Jets/Miami on Christmas night. They included as a "terrible game" the Bears/Rams game on Monday, Dec 11. You are talking about 2 current division leaders. Why would this be terrible? After the East coast trip the Bears might have a loss or two, and this could be a huge HFA game. Should I call and complain?
  23. This doesn't make any sense. The crapshoot idea, and luck spread over less innings does not make it more remarkable that the Yankees lost. It's not odd at all for them to lose 3 of 4. It's absurd to spend all the money on pitching, utterly absurd. The best bet is to be both very good at pitching and at hitting. The Cubs suck at both, and need to improve both.
  24. If he was righty, he'd be the perfect platoon partner with Jones. Too bad he's not.
  25. I don't see much value in this. Zim is a cartoon. I can't see him helping Girardi at all at this point. I could see Torre being of help, given his relationship with Joe and managerial experience. Maybe he'd want to relax for a year watching from afar while collecting his $7m from George. But Zim? No thanks. The Cubs don't need managers making gut decisions and hoping it works out. They need to focus on getting better players and putting them in the best possible situation to succeed.
