  1. I disagree strongly. Cedeno, Pagan, Fontenot and the like aren't going to learn from anymore AAA time. Introduce them to the majors and get their feet wet. I don't want a 21 year old getting 75 at bats on the bench. But guys with a lot of minor league service time, especially ones who have already had a decent amount of major league time, should be fine for the bench. I think it's a waste to spend a few million on a veteran version of the same player.
  2. It rained all night. It was relatively dry up to about 8:15, but the radar was ugly and it was obviously going to come down. I don't understand why Verlander would start warming up while Mussina wasn't out there yet. Moose has to go to the mound first, and you can see both bullpens easily at the stadium.
  3. I'm beginning to not really give a crap. I was passionately against the Baker recruitment from the day the rumors started midseason. I don't really care about managers, because they are mainly meaningless figureheads. What matters most is what players the GM gets. A manager can certainly screw things up, and they all seem to try, in an attempt to get in the good graces of those people who praise the little things and show off how close they are paying attention. The Cubs were poised for greatness in 2002, and I feared Baker would royally screw it up, as he did. The Cubs are no longer poised for greatness, and there really isn't much a manager can screw up now. It's entirely on Hendry's shoulders to repair a broken roster, that he and Baker broke.
  4. Like Furcal? He has a history of incompetence more than anything else.
  5. We're having our own letdown game. Jauron can suck the life out of an undefeated season.
  6. I've had similar cautious sentiments all season. And now the Bears are giving 11, and the line is holding steady. I believe the Vikings game was the come out flat game, and I really expect Lovie and the coaches to prevent that this time. But I don't see them dominating like they have in 3 of the first 4 games. Honestly, assuming they avoid coming out flat, I don't see how they won't dominate this game. Buffalo's o-line has holes (Hell, they have Mike Gandy starting) and our front four is going to be in Losman's face all day. I see a very dominant day defensively leading to many opportunities to score for the offense. 24-6 Actually, I think they can dominate the game, I just don't see them winning by 30. I think a 17-7 game is a little more likely. Losman will get beat up, but Willis will gain some yards.
  7. It's a fruitless discussion, but I kind of sucks for the Twins, and teams like them, that they have to have day games for all their home playoff games.
  8. Um, if you're talking about Chris Speier, he has a drinking problem. I don't think he was "whooping it up" so much as living his disease. Unless you're talking about another of the coaches, but I can't see anyone else hanging out in bars near Wrigley. No, it wasn't Speier. I'm not going to judge a coach for going to a bar after a loss. I would.
  9. What kept Larry coming back, the promise of a manager's job?
  10. They are going on the "El Duque is clutch in the playoffs" principle. He and Maine have been their best starters since the ASB. And they know Glavine has a horrible divsional series history. Also, when they found out Pedro was done, Glavine had already had 4 days rest and was scheduled to pitch the next day. I don't think they wanted him starting Game 1 on 9 days rest, so they let him pitch on his normal schedule to keep him consistent. His one start this year on long rest was very bad.
  11. Shows how much impact strikeouts have in the making of a contending club. Ken It helps the pitching staff, but the benefit is negated by all the walks. The rest of the top 5 K teams were top 6 ERA teams. The worst k rate teams were among the worst ERA teams.
  12. For now, I could live with Hendry as manager/GM, just for the humor, if not, then to set the record straight about what he actually wants done on the field. If anything, it could hasten his exit.
  13. Mr. Len Did Esquire Magazine make the right decision? Which Cubs personality would most likely cheat on the golf course? Do the Cubs realize that their lack of walks the past 4 years has been the primary reason why their offense has sucked so bad? Do they realize their offense has sucked so bad?
  14. She did. I was just going to write that... I meant, he looked like a guy who was forced to do a press conference where he'd be asked about prospective dates just after his wife left him. He didn't seem the least bit interested in who would next manage the Cubs. Maybe he'll go back on the field.
  15. I was disgusted by his display in the press conference. He looked completely clueless. He looked like a man who was forced to do a press conference after his wife left him.
  16. Another reason why it's stupid to delay. Assistant coaches aren't going to sit around waiting for the Cubs to ask them out. They are going to take a job if it's offered, because for the most part, these aren't guys who have made $1m a year for the past few years. When you wait to hire the "right" manager, you often times miss out on his first choices for assistant coaches, just like how Jauron ended up with the scraps when he was hired late. Hire a manager by tomorrow, and give him a chance to get whomever he wants.
  17. Wait, so Grimsley came out and said that Pettitte and Clemens weren't some of the guys who he saw do roids? And didn't mention Tejada? According to ESPNNews, Grimsley's direct quote is "Never in a million years would Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens do performance enhancing drugs." I don't take his publicly spoken word with any value. He named names under pressure and now probably feels ashamed, and I assume is covering his butt. Where there's smoke, there's often fire, and Clemens has more than enough smoke around him for me to think there could be a fire.
  18. He's also not the type of guy who can be trusted to do a competent job.
  19. And it wasn't the first time Baylor did that with Lieber. It seemed to me like they had about 55 rain delays in Pittsburgh that year, and Lieber pitched through every one of them. And not just 15 minute delays either, but like 2 hour ones.
  20. He could certainly have a list of those he'd like to contact without actually making the contact. The Marlins proved that it is very possible to move quickly; there's no reason the Cubs couldn't have done the same. And most every business out there, including sports teams, have their ducks lined up in advance through back channel communications. At the very least, you should have a list of who you'd like, and you should have a decent idea of who would be interested in the job. Anything less than that is incompetent management.
  21. I've had similar cautious sentiments all season. And now the Bears are giving 11, and the line is holding steady. 22. I get the impression that Brenly is more like a Mike Golic, tolerating the little guy who never played the game that's sitting next to him, and humoring him by listening to his stories, but not taking him seriously. I don't think 2 years is long enough for him to learn new tricks. Wasn't Dierker an announcer for like 15 years or something?
  23. I'm not sure about that, but mostly because I don't really have an educated opinion on Girardi. Piniella would be a tremendous, absurdly terrible mistake. I'm terrified that Jim will grab him. He might be the best choice in the long-run, however, for those who want a clean sweep of everybody before 2008. A Piniella/Hendry combo could implode so quickly and dramatically that change might be forced down their throats. New owners often aren't afraid to eat the contracts of presiding management, or they could just factor it into the price of the sale.
  24. This whole thing reaks of the McCaskey/McGinnis/Phillips/Jauron/Hatley fiasco. The potential for ownership change justs adds to the drama. MacPhail plays the role of the privileged son brushed aside, McDonough plays the worked his way up but doesn't get much respect guy. I wonder who will be McGinnis, the up-and-comer who might have taken the job but shied away because of the unprofessionalism. Will Brenly be Jauron? Hired by Hendry, then stays on after a new GM is brought in in 2008? 2007 could be a lost directionless season, but I could see some short term flukish success as well, which might just muddy the waters as the powers that be try to change things.
